Troubleshooting steps for Windows 95, 98 and ME

Do not dial-up to do this part, since you may have to reboot when you make a change

NOTE: When you see username, use YOUR Wittenberg username
  1. Right-click the Network Neighborhood icon and select Properties from the menu
  2. Make sure under the heading "The following network components are installed" only these items are listed:
  3. Under the heading "Primary Network Logon", "Client for Microsoft Networks" is selected
  4. Click TCP/IP, then click the Properties button
  5. In the new window select the DNS Configuration tab
  6. Select Enable DNS
  7. For host, enter username-HOME
  8. For Domain type WITTENBERG (use all caps)
  9. Add the following two entries to the "DNS Server Search Order"
  10. Add wittenberg.edu to the "Domain Suffix Search Order"
  11. Click the "WINS Configuration" tab and make sure the Use DHCP for WINS resolution option is selected at the bottom
  12. Click the "IP Address" tab; the Obtain an IP address automatically option should be selected.
  13. Click the OK button at the bottom and then Ok on the next window
  14. If Windows asks to restart, click Restart
  15. After logging back into the computer, dial the Wittenberg University network
  16. After connecting click the Windows Start button and select run
  17. Type the word COMMAND and press Enter
  18. On the black screen that appears, type NET CONFIG and press Enter. (Don't miss the space between "Net" and "Config" here.)
  19. Several lines of information will appear. The line labeled user name should read:

  20. user name:    WITTENBERG\username
    
    If it doesn't have WITTENBERG\ in front of your username, then skip to the section Missing log on step during setup found below.
  21. Type: NET USE driveletter "share path"

  22. *NOTE: driveletter is a drive letter you choose, and share path is the path you are trying to map.
  23. If asked for your password type in your Windows password.
  24. Now you can map drives using the standard instructions.

Missing log on step during setup

If you are reading this, it means there is a step missing during the setup of dial-up networking.

  1. If you are connected to dial-up, disconnect before continuing
  2. Click the Windows Start Button
  3. Select Run
  4. Type command and press Enter
  5. At the prompt type C:\Windows and press enter
  6. Type del *.pwl and press enter
  7. Restart your machine
  8. When your machine starts back up, it will ask for a username and password
  9. For the username type:
  10. WITTENBERG\username
    making sure WITTENBERG is in all caps
  11. For the password use your Wittenberg University LDAP password
  12. It will then ask you to confirm your password, so type it again
  13. Now that you are logged on go back to step 16
