Troubleshooting steps for Windows 95, 98 and ME
Do not dial-up to do this part,
since you may have to reboot when you make a change
NOTE: When you see
username, use YOUR Wittenberg username
- Right-click the Network Neighborhood icon and select Properties from the menu
- Make sure under the heading "The following network components are installed" only these items are listed:
- Client for Microsoft Networks
- Dial-Up Adapter
- TCP/IP
- Under the heading "Primary Network Logon", "Client for Microsoft Networks" is selected
- Click TCP/IP, then click the Properties button
- In the new window select the DNS Configuration tab
- Select Enable DNS
- For host, enter username-HOME
- For Domain type WITTENBERG (use all caps)
- Add the following two entries to the "DNS Server Search Order"
- Add wittenberg.edu to the "Domain Suffix Search Order"
- Click the "WINS Configuration" tab and make sure the Use DHCP for
WINS resolution option is selected at the bottom
- Click the "IP Address" tab; the Obtain an IP address
automatically option should be selected.
- Click the OK button at the bottom and then Ok on the next window
- If Windows asks to restart, click Restart
- After logging back into the computer, dial the Wittenberg University network
- After connecting click the Windows Start button and select run
- Type the word COMMAND and press Enter
- On the black screen that appears, type NET CONFIG and press Enter. (Don't miss the space between "Net" and "Config" here.)
- Several lines of information will appear. The line labeled user name should read:
user name: WITTENBERG\username
If it doesn't have WITTENBERG\ in front of your username, then skip to
the section Missing log on step during setup found below.
- Type: NET USE driveletter "share path"
*NOTE: driveletter is a drive letter you choose, and share path is the path you
are trying to map.
- If asked for your password type in your Windows password.
- Now you can map drives using the standard instructions.

Missing log on step during setup
If you are reading this, it means there is a step missing during the setup of dial-up networking.
- If you are connected to dial-up, disconnect before continuing
- Click the Windows Start Button
- Select Run
- Type command and press Enter
- At the prompt type C:\Windows and press enter
- Type del *.pwl and press enter
- Restart your machine
- When your machine starts back up, it will ask for a username and password
- For the username type:
WITTENBERG\username
making sure WITTENBERG is in
all caps
- For the password use your Wittenberg University LDAP password
- It will then ask you to confirm your password, so type it again
- Now that you are logged on go back to step 16
