Accessing the Network

Using VPN Access through non-Wittenberg Internet Service Providers
If you use Wittenberg's dialup for your Internet connection, this page is not applicable to you.
However, if you use someone else for Internet service and are a student, faculty or staff member, we have good news. You can now connect to the Wittenberg network from your home PC - even if you dial/connect to a different ISP.
How? VPN - Virtual Private Networking - has now been added as a service available to Wittenberg employees. This service allows a secure link from your home computer to Wittenberg, enabling you to map network drives, save or open files stored here, etc.
Basic information:
- In order to create the secure link (tunnel) between your computer and Wittenberg's network, you will need to install the VPN client software.
- You must have your Wittenberg LDAP username and password (commonly referred to as your e-mail username and password).
- This connection will *not* allow you to browse the Internet through a web browser while you are connected to Wittenberg. Just like any other software, if you have the client on it is active; when you close it/log out it is no longer active. In order to use a web browser you will need to log out/close the VPN software.
- Any computer connecting directly to Wittenberg's network must have active and currently updated virus scanning software enabled. Wittenberg can provide you with such software - contact the Solution Center for more information.
- Other software is not available for home installation, so files for which you do not have the correct program installed on your personal computer may not work from home.
- Any connection made from your home computer is subject to the same policies as a computer on campus; your password and other information must remain confidential. Unauthorized access to Wittenberg resources is not permitted. Click to see a copy of the Access To and Use of Computing Resources Policy.
