Student worker access to department drives
Beginning Wednesday, March 25 2009, student worker access to department folders will change, thanks in part to the installation of new multi-function printers around campus later this week.
On Wednesday, all students employed by departments who share folders with student workers via the I:\ (department drive) will gain a new drive letter, J:\. The J:\ drive will list ALL departments who have a student or other folder for student worker use. Students working for that department (only; permissions do NOT change) can open the J:\ drive letter, then open the folder for the department.
Example:
Currently, a student working for the Information Technology Services will open the G:\ drive. (The letter varies from person to person.)
Beginning Wednesday, a student working for the Information Technology Services will open the J:\ drive, then locate and open the folder Information Technology Services Student Workers.
What does changing this drive letter or folder have to do with new printers?
The new printer/scanner/copier machines (multi-function printers) allow multiple new options for scanning. One of those is a scan-to-folder option, where the folder is one you select yourself. That means that a student worker can go to the multi-function printer, scan a document, and save it to the J:\folder for the department where they work. The new multi-function printers allow anyone to scan to any folder where the person has access, rather than restricting to just a single I:\scans folder.
The drive letter change does NOT affect faculty or staff. You will gain the ability to scan to a folder of your choice when the new multi-function printer is installed in your area.
