Students, Faculty, or Staff: Connect your personal computer to the campus network

Windows:
Items to check before registering your computer on campus:
- Know your LDAP (WittLink Portal) password.
- Be sure any drivers required to run the network card or port are installed and working. (Consult the documentation or your hardware manufacturer.)
- Update the operating system, including any critical updates or service packs. **
- Remove any other virus scan programs you may have BEFORE installing the McAfee software from the University.
- Have a network cable. (Catagory 5 - Available at the campus bookstore.)
**These are available from the operating system manufacturer. For Windows, open Internet Explorer, click Tools, Windows update and follow the instructions. We recommend installing them before coming to campus.
Registering:
Register your computer on campus:
In residence halls and other wired locations- connect the network cable to a blue or orange ethernet (data) jack in the wall.
If you're connecting through the wireless network, make sure you're in a location covered by Wittenberg's wireless network. (Wireless is NOT available in any residence hall.)
- Open Internet Explorer. (Windows-use Internet Explorer only. For Apple, use Safari.)
- Log into the WittConnect screen using your LDAP (e-mail) username and password.
- Fill out the Register new device form, read and click the check box agreeing to the policy, and click the Add Device button.
- Read and follow the on-screen instructions. Click the Continue button.
- If asked, allow installation of the Active X software the network will run to check your computer.
- Your computer is automatically scanned; if you do not have updates you will be given a chance to install them. You may also quit at any point, but you must go through the process to put the computer on the network. After the system check is finished, click Continue at the bottom of the screen. (Apple users will skip to the last step after clicking "Continue".)
- To correct items in the checklist with a red "X", click the link provided to change or install each one. Read and follow the on-screen instructions. If you must restart the computer after a step, return to the first step in this section..
- After all the items in the checklist are "green", click the Continue button at the bottom of the screen.
- If you use a network cable, disconnect the network cable for a few seconds, then restart the computer. If wireless, just restart the computer and use the Cisco VPN software to connect. See link below for directions.
Apple:
- Open Internet Explorer. (Windows-use Internet Explorer only. For Apple, use Safari.)
- Log into the WittConnect screen using your LDAP (e-mail) username and password.
- Fill out the Register new device form selecting Guest Device, read and click the check box agreeing to the policy, and click the Add Device button.
- Select the timeframe and complete the note regarding the purpose of the guest computer on campus. Click the Continue button.
If the computer will be used on the WIRED network, do not install the Cisco VPN software. Simply restart the computer and it is ready for use.
- Set up your computer for the campus wireless network (Apple) by downloading the Virex and Cisco Virtual Private Networking software from Wittenberg's software download site or stop by the Solution Center to pick up a CD.
- To install Cisco's VPN software, drag the file either from the Solution Center's CD or from your download into the Applications folder.
- Start the VPN software; it will be listed in your Applications. Click Import and find the file you either downloaded or the one on the CD. Import the files you'll find in the Profiles folder.
- Restart your computer.
