  • Insurance Information
  • In the interests of student health, Wittenberg has a policy that requires all full-time students to have medical insurance coverage. All enrolled students are required to provide a photocopy of their insurance card as proof of insurance coverage at the time of enrollment. This copy is retained at the health center in the student medical file. For convenience and value, the university also offers a basic student insurance plan to all full time students.

The cost of the coverage is $190 per year and is automatically billed on the fall semester statement. This policy pays secondary to any other coverage the student may have. It is designed to pay deductibles and co-pays from a primary carrier. If the student has no other coverage, the student insurance will pay as the primary carrier. Please read the brochure for details on coverage and policy limits. We have found our students and their families pleased with this coverage. However, if you feel that your son or daughter has adequate coverage under your plan, you may complete and submit an online waiver of the Wittenberg coverage on or before August 28th, 2009 and a credit will be applied to your student account.

Please be advised that many private health plans DO NOT cover services received away from the home network. This could affect your student's ability to receive care in a timely manner. If you do choose to insure your student privately, educate both yourself and your student on what needs to be done to have lab tests or x-rays paid for. They may need to have their local physician order such tests (problematic because the local physician may refuse to do so without seeing the patient) or they may need to go to the emergency room for evaluation (much more expensive and usually unnecessary because the problem is urgent but not emergent). Sometimes, with a call to your insurer, you can get a letter authorizing coverage from the college physician during the academic year. While the services of the doctor and nurses are free, all tests (think strep throat, Pap smears, STD tests, blood counts), procedures (wart removal, laceration repair, foreign body removal, etc), involve a charge. The Wittenberg supplemental insurance covers these charges up to $1000.00 maximum per illness.

If you choose private insurance, make sure your student has a copy of his/her card and a prescription card as well. The student is responsible for confirming coverage prior to the completion of any test at the health center. Health Center charges not covered by private insurance are the responsibility of the student and will be billed to the student's account. We look forward to serving your student at Wittenberg, and we encourage you to stop in at the Health and Wellness Center during new-student days. You may call us at 937-327-7811 after Aug. 1st if you have any questions.
