What's Up On Campus

• DON'T FORGET THE GALA CELEBRATION OF THE SUCCESSFUL DEFINING MOMENTS CAMPAIGN "Our Time to Shine" at 8 p.m. tonight at Kuss Auditorium. MCs Janet Jackson '75 and Peter Kluge '84 will present a program of music, dance, theatre and a video featuring faculty and students. Tickets are still available by calling the Office of Advancement at 7414. Tickets are also available at the will call window at Kuss Auditorium immediately prior to the event.

• THE WINTER 2002 ISSUE OF WITTENBERG MAGAZINE HAS ARRIVED and will be distributed around campus shortly. The latest issue can also be found online. In contrast to previous Web editions of the magazine, selected sections of this online version are in HTML, so they are easier to view, read, download and print.

• THE OFFICE OF ADMISSION WILL WELCOME 55 PROSPECTIVE STUDENTS to campus on Sunday and Monday, Jan. 27-28. Enjoy these guests as they attend classes, tour campus and participate in interviews with faculty and staff.

• THE WITTENBERG SERIES PRESENTS THE WILLIAM A. KINNISON Endowed Lecture in History on Monday, Jan. 28. Neil Levine, the Emmet Blakeney Gleason Professor of History of Art and Architecture at Harvard University, is the guest speaker. Levine is an authority on modern architecture and an expert on the work of architect Frank Lloyd Wright, whose rendering of the Westcott House is the subject of this year's Wittenberg Series poster. Westcott House is an important local landmark, and Levine is consulting with the Westcott House Foundation on the restoration currently underway. His visit to campus is in conjunction with the Westcott House Foundation. Learn more about the Westcott House at www.westcotthouse.org and www.architectureweek.com.

• THE OPPORTUNITY TO VISIT A MUSICAL INSTRUMENT DIGITAL INTERFACE (MIDI) LAB has come. According to Steve Winteregg, adjunct associate professor of music and coordinator of the lab, an open house of the John M. Chowning Laboratory for Music and Technology will be held next Wednesday. An hour has been set aside to allow "drop-ins" to enjoy demonstrations of computer music notation, music sequencing, audio-for-video and multimedia. See Highlights for details. Some background information on MIDI can be reviewed online.

• APPLICATIONS FOR THE WASHINGTON SEMESTER PROGRAM for Summer 2002 are due Thursday, Jan. 31, and are available from George Hudson, professor of political science and director of Russian Area Studies, 212 Hollenbeck Hall. Nancy Joyner, dean of the Washington Semester Program, will be on campus Wednesday, Jan. 30 to meet with students interested in the program. She will be joined by students who have already participated in the program, and who will share their experiences. See Highlights for details.

• WITTENBERG ART STUDENTS WILL PRESENT AN EXHIBIT titled "Fixture Control Device," Feb. 1 - March 2 at the Java House, 117 S. Fountain Ave. An opening reception will be held Feb. 1 from 7 - 10 p.m. The exhibit will be shown Monday - Thursday, 7:30 a.m. - 9 p.m., Friday 7:30 a.m. - 11 p.m. and Saturday 10 a.m. - 11 p.m.

Administrative Notes

• ALL 2001 W-2S WERE SENT OUT ON JAN. 18. If you are a current full-time or regular part-time employee, your 2001 W-2 was sent to your applicable department via inter-campus mail. All other W-2s were sent to the home address via first class U.S. Mail. If you should misplace or need another copy of your W-2, please contact the Human Resources office at (937) 327-7517.

• BARB MACKEY, DIRECTOR OF COMMUNITY PROGRAMS, BEGINS the promotional circuit for WISE Academic Camp and the Summer Honors Institute at Granville's Camp Fair this Saturday. Visits to camp fairs in Northern Cincinnati on Feb. 9 and the Columbus public schools on Feb. 12 will follow. Later in February, Mackey will attend Ohio's Post-Secondary Enrollment Options Program (PSEOP) parent's programs in local high schools. Learn more about PSEOP.

• THE CAMPUS CABLE-TV PROVIDER, TIME WARNER, IS CURRENTLY UPGRADING the cable technology in our area to a fiber-optic network. It has advised that temporary interruptions of service may occur during the installation, but it will do its best to keep these to a minimum. The channel line-up will change when the upgrade has been completed, and that information will be provided as soon as it's available.

• WITTENBERG'S MEN'S AND WOMEN'S BASKETBALL TEAMS are both off to terrific starts to the 2001-02 season, and both face tremendous challenges this weekend in a home doubleheader at the HPER Center. The women's team, 12-4 overall and 7-1 in the North Coast Athletic Conference, plays defending conference champion Ohio Wesleyan at 2 p.m. in a game to determine first place. The men's team, 15-3 overall and 8-1 in the NCAC, takes on Wooster at 7:30 p.m., also with first place on the line. To read more about the big games, check out the women's pre-game notes and the men's pre-game notes.

Club/Organization of the Week

• COLLEGE REPUBLICANS ENJOY A MORE INFLUENTIAL BASE in the city than on campus, according to Stacy Pollock, president. "Students tend to register in their home towns, and we have found that we're more effective in Springfield than on campus," she said. For instance, the club set up the forum and organized a debate among the candidates in last November's city commission elections, and it expects to be very active as it campaigns for this November's election when several state contests and issues will appear on the ballot. On Thursday, Jan. 31, 10 of Wittenberg's College Republicans will travel to Arlington, Va. to attend the Conservative Political Action Conference (CPAC), where 75 politically active conservative organizations will have booths set up to explain their positions. Learn more about the College Republicans and CPAC.

Work This Week

• APPLICATIONS ARE NOW BEING ACCEPTED AT THE STUDENT CENTER for the position of Student Manager. There are three positions available. The application deadline is Tuesday, Jan. 29 at 4:30 p.m. Interested students should also attend the information session that will be held at 4:30 p.m. in the Li Room of the Student Center on Jan. 29th.

Kudos

• "SPECIAL KUDOS TO THE ADVANCEMENT STAFF AND TO ALL MEMBERS OF THE WITTENBERG COMMUNITY who helped support in any way the efforts of The Defining Moments Campaign during the past five years. While we're very grateful to our generous donors and volunteers, the goal could not have been met without the enormous efforts of many faculty and staff who helped articulate the vision, define the projects, implement the fund-raising strategies, and serve on campus as good stewards of the gifts provided."

Chuck Dominick
Vice President for University Advancement
