What's Up On Campus

• ROBERT P. WELKER, professor of education and director of graduate studies, was named Ohio Professor of the Year on Tuesday. Read about Welker and the celebration held in his honor in Wittenberg's press release.

• WELKER CONTINUES A TRADITION of excellence as he became the fourth Wittenberg professor to be so honored. Cynthia Behrman, professor emeritus of history, David Mason, professor of biology, and Terry Otten, professor of English, have also been recognized in the 20-year history of the award. The award is given by the Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement of Teaching and the Council for Advancement and Support of Education.

• SPRINGFIELD MAYOR WARREN COPELAND, professor of religion and director of urban studies, pronounced Nov.13, 2001 "Excellence in Teaching Day" in honor of Wittenberg, the Springfield City Schools, Melody Boyd '87, 2001 National Teacher of the Year, and Bob Welker, 2001 Ohio Professor of the Year. In closing, he said, "Bob, you represent well what all of us believe in the spirit of Wittenberg."

• THE CURRENT ISSUE of Wittenberg Magazine is now online . In this issue, alumni share stories, thoughts and reflections following the tragic events of Sept. 11. This particular cover story also has an accompanying Web site in which alums and students tell their stories in greater detail.

• VAUGHN MCKENNEY, director of security/police, reports that the campus dispatch operators successfully completed "The Vital Link," a 12-hour training course, this week. The program was conducted by Sgt. Michael A. Roach, supervisor of communications for the Clark County Sheriff's Department. Dispatcher Wilma S. Lewis reported that the training included gathering and dispatching information, dealing with an anxious public, handling difficult calls and dealing the stress of the job. She said the dispatchers also enjoyed sharing the training opportunity. McKenney added that additional dispatch training will be scheduled.

• ARTIST ALERT! Take advantage of a H.O.T.T. opportunity to display your talents. The Mid-Ohio Harley Davidson Chapter is joining forces with the Springfield Symphony Orchestra to sponsor Hoggs on the Town (H.O.T.T.), a fund-raising event that will culminate in an auction next summer. Harley Davidson is manufacturing 25 life-size fiberglass motorcycles (Hoggs) to be decorated and displayed in prominent business locations around Springfield and Clark County prior to their auction. Proceeds will benefit the orchestra. Contact the president's office at 327-7916 for more information.

• PAYROLL FOR ALL faculty and staff will be Wednesday, Nov. 21, due to the Thanksgiving holiday.

• DR. MICHAEL HUDAK of the Public Lands Without Livestock Project will present a slide presentation Monday, Nov. 19 on the environmental and economic implications of grazing cows on public lands. Hudak's program is sponsored by the departments of sociology, economics, geography and the environmental studies program. See Highlights for details.

• PERFORMANCES OF THIS FALL'S One-Act Play Festival will be held this weekend and Nov. 29 - Dec. 2 at Blair Hall and Chakeres Theatres. Free tickets are available one hour before show time. See Highlights for details.

• THE WITTENBERG FOOTBALL TEAM clinched an unprecendented fifth consecutive NCAC Championship two weeks ago with a 38-3 win over Earlham College. The seventh-ranked Tigers open NCAA Division III Tournament play at noon Central time, Saturday, Nov. 17 at Hardin-Simmons University in Abilene, Texas. The game will be broadcast by WBLY AM 1600 in Springfield and carried on Wittenberg's Web site at Wittenberg's Broadcast Page. Join special guest color commentator Ryan Maurer, Wittenberg's director of sports information. If you have problems listening on Wittenberg's Web site, follow the links provided there to Hardin-Simmons' Web site and online broadcast. Details of Wittenberg's outstanding regular season can be found on the Football Web page.

• THE BASKETBALL SEASON is right around the corner and the first NCAA Division III poll has been released. The Wittenberg University men's team is ranked No. 13 by d3hoops.com. Check it out at d3hoops.com preseason poll, while the women's team garnered votes for the first national poll but were not listed among the top 25 teams in the nation. The season begins for both the men's and women's teams on Nov. 16, and the home schedule opens for both teams on Nov. 20. The women play Baldwin-Wallace at 6 p.m., and the men take on Case Western Reserve at 8 p.m. Both games are at the HPER Center.

• PROJECT WOMAN'S secure facility for battered women needs a Christmas tree and ornaments. Donations may be made through the Community Service office. Call 327-7523. Other Springfield non-profits will reap the benefits of any additional tree and ornament donations.

• CONTRIBUTIONS TO THE Delta Sigma Theta Inc. winter clothing drive can be dropped off at the Benham-Pence Student Center where bins have been placed in the lobby. All items received will benefit those served by Project Woman.

• CONGRATULATIONS TO WITTENBERG FIELD HOCKEY standout Rebecca Russ '03, who was named third-team All-America earlier this week. Russ was earlier selected first-team All-North Coast Athletic Conference and All-Great Lakes Region for a second straight year. She helped the team to a 13-6 overall record and 10-2 mark in the NCAC. The Tigers finished second in the NCAC.

Administrative Notes

• The university's open enrollment for health insurance began Nov. 12. Open enrollment allows faculty and staff to make changes to their health insurance by enrolling themselves and their dependents without the need for a special enrollment event such as birth, marriage, loss of other coverage, etc. This opportunity continues through Dec. 14. Additional supplemental life insurance can also be purchased during this time. Refer questions to LuAnn Shafer at 7519, or e-mail lshafer.

Club/Organization of the Week

• DURING THE TWO WEEKS covered in this issue of Around the Hollow, two musical organizations will hold public performances.

THE WITTENBERG SINGERS will perform on Sunday, Nov. 18. Amanda Evans '04, president of the women's choir, says the concert will include secular, spiritual and Christmas selections with Carol Todd, adjunct instructor of music, directing. The choir's members represent faculty, staff and students for a total of 75 voices. In December the choir will participate in Choral Vespers, and it will appear in concert with the Handbell Choir in the spring.

ON THURSDAY, NOV. 29, the Ohio Collegiate Music Educator's Association (OCMEA) has scheduled a variety show. OCMEA is an academic club for music education majors, according to Jamie Cole '02, president of the club. The variety show is a fund-raising event the members are holding to earn money to attend the annual conference. The talents of several members will be showcased as they perform Broadway and pop numbers.

Work This Week

• TEN STUDENTS are looking for campus service opportunities in one-to-two-hour blocks between Thanksgiving and winter break. Got a big mailing that needs assembling? Filing that's stacked up? A paint job? There's no catch. It's free. First come, first serve. Contact Kristen Lindeman at s03.klindeman@wittenberg.edu.

Kudos

• Kudos to Kristin Kretschman '94, catering manager for Sodexho Marriott, and her staff, for the traditional Thanksgiving meal on Wednesday. More than 100 faculty and staff gathered in the Shouvlin Center to enjoy the feast and the elegant setting prepared for them. Kudos and sighs of pleasure were heard around campus all afternoon.

Maureen Sheehan Massaro, director of human resources and quality management extends Kudos to the staff. Customer service makes a difference as one new student's parents recently discovered and shared in a letter to the university: "I cannot express to you how grateful we are that Wittenberg was Tim's choice. It is everything that you said it would be! On several occasions, during the past few months, I have had to contact various departments at Wittenberg. I always received a friendly, courteous response to my questions or concerns. Additionally, if a response wasn't immediately available, I received a phone call from your college soon after my initial request. Please extend my appreciation to the staff for everything they have done to make my son's college life exactly what we had hoped it would be - Wonderful!"
