This massive root system at the south end of Myers Hollow, the namesake of this publication, is part of a black maple tree, according to Ronald Delanglade, professor of biology. The unusual growth probably has been forced to the surface by expanding on top of a hard pan layer - along with some erosion - to give it its splendid relief, Delanglade added.
