• WILLIAM J. HIGGINS, associate professor of mathematics, was awarded the 2007 Ohio Section Award for Distinguished College or University Teaching of Mathematics at the Mathematical Association of America annual meeting in April. Read more ...


• SCOTT ROSENBERG, associate professor of history, assumes the responsibility for oversight of the Honor Council and its processes effective immediately after Commencement. Rosenberg's appointment was announced by Provost Ken Bladh on May 9.

• TOM MARTIN, professor of HFS, wrote a commentary titled "More Gym Classes Can Help Kids' Bodies and Minds," which appeared in the Springfield News-Sun, April 1. The commentary included a Q&A from March 26, titled "More Gym Class Wrong Way to Shape up Kids," with the original questions and editorial answers followed by Martin's response.

• BRIAN SHELBURNE, associate professor of mathematics and computer science and department chair, has been elected to the Ohio Section Program Committee of the MAA. HIGGINS is the current president of the Ohio Section, and ADAM PARKER, assistant professor of mathematics, is an Ohio NExt fellow (a teaching/mentoring program supported by the Ohio section.) JOHN DAVENPORT, visiting instructor of mathematics, and HIGGINS gave presentations at the spring meeting for project NExT, and Emily List '07 gave a student talk on knot theory at the meeting. Wittenberg will host the fall meeting of the Ohio Section on Oct. 26-27.

• DOUG LEHMAN, director of Thomas Library, has been elected to the SOCHE Library Council Executive Committee as a member-at-large. He will serve in this position for the 2007-08 year.


• RUTH HOFF, associate professor of languages, MARGARET GOODMAN, associate professor of biology and director of biochemistry/molecular biology, and TAMMY PROCTOR, associate professor of history, covered the 26.2-mile event in the 2007 Flying Pig Marathon, which was held in Cincinnati, May 5-6. • FRED TIFFANY, associate professor of economics and department chair, discussed the rising cost of gasoline in an article titled "Gas Prices Top $3 a Gallon; How High Will It Go?" which appeared in the Springfield News-Sun, May 4. Read more ...
