• PRESIDENT MARK H. ERICKSON has announced that Sarah M. Kelly will begin her duties as our vice president for student life/dean of students in mid-January. Erickson thanked the search committee and the others who participated in the process.

• SEASONS GREETINGS from the staff of university communications. Around the Hollow resumes publication Friday, Jan. 11. Deadline for copy for the next issue is Tuesday, Jan. 8.

• WINTER BREAK BEGINS Saturday, Dec. 15. Residence halls re-open Sunday, Jan. 6, and spring classes begin Monday, Jan. 7.

• ACCOUNTS PAYABLE must have any paperwork, including check requests, travel expense reports, purchase orders, etc. by 5 p.m. Tuesday, Dec. 18 for processing before the Christmas holidays. No checks will be printed or mailed during the week of Dec. 24. Check requests after Dec. 18 will be processed Thursday, Jan. 3. Refer any questions to Shayne Lepper, administrative assistance for accounting services, at 7005, Sue Apple, coordinator for accounting services, at 6386, or Susan Swank, coordinator for accounts payable, at 7004.

• ENJOY AN EXAMPLE, left, of the works completed by Wittenberg students and faculty who participated in the Watercolor Painting in Rome course conducted in May and June, 2007. An exhibition is on display in the Art Beech Gallery at the SPRINGFIELD MUSEUM OF ART through Jan. 5, 2008.

• SOLUTION CENTER WINTER BREAK HOURS include walk-ins from 8:30 a.m.-12 p.m. Monday-Friday, and voice mail will be checked through 4:30 p.m. The center will be closed during university holiday hours.

• TWELVE SENIORS RECEIVED Distinguished Honor Awards for their Management Senior Portfolios, and six seniors received honorable mention for distinguished portfolios, from the management department. Read more ...

• THE UPWARD BOUND PARENT CLUB at Wittenberg is selling dog tags as part of its annual fundraiser. Designed as a keepsake to remember the legacies of both North and South high schools before their merger, the tags are emblazoned with the colors and mascots of both schools and sell for $10 each or $15 for two. An ideal gift for an alumni, student, friend or supporter of the schools, they come with an 18 inch chair for a dog tag or a shorter one that makes a good key chain. • THE CHARLES B. ZIMMERMAN MEMORIAL CLASSIC basketball tournament begins Friday, Dec. 28, and the consolation and championship games will be played Saturday, Dec. 29.

• VOLUNTEERS ARE NEEDED to lead a spring break trip to Texas to help those affected by Hurricane Rita. The Community Service Office and the Pastor’s Office plan a March 1-8 trip to assist in the repair and rebuilding of homes. The Community Service Office is organizing the trip in collaboration with Lutheran Disaster Relief and needs four volunteers who are skilled in construction or a trade to lead the group. • THE GERMAN LANGUAGE EPIPHANY SERVICE begins at 7:30 p.m. Sunday, Jan. 6, Weaver Chapel. Read more ...

• A CAMPUS-WIDE RECYCLING PROGRAM begins Monday, Jan. 7. Recycling stations will be placed in every building over winter break, and each station will have a container for paper products and a container for glass, plastics and metals. Office paper, newspaper (including color and glossy inserts), magazines and food boxes, such as cereal boxes, can be recycled in the paper bins. DO NOT place books, phone books or beverage cartons in the bins. Recycle soda bottles, cans, food jars, milk jugs, water bottles and laundry/cleaning product containers in the glass, plastics and metals bins. Discard lids and rinse containers before placing them in the bins. DO NOT place light bulbs, broken glass, such as window, mirror glass or dishes in the bins. • THE SECOND CITY TOURING COMPANY presents two performances of “One Nation Under Blog.” The Witt Series-sponsored events will begin at 7 p.m. and 10 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 17, Chakeres Memorial Theatre. The events are free and open to the public. However, due to seating limits, tickets are required and may be picked up at the Benham-Pence Student Center Service Center.

MARTIN LUTHER KING JR. Day observances include the Witt Series-sponsored Martin Luther King Jr. Commemorative Convocation at 11 a.m. Monday, Jan. 21.
