F. Unpaid Leaves

  1. Military Service
Federal and state law provide protected leave for military service. Information respecting military leave rights and responsibilities, including employee notice and paperwork requirements, may be obtained from the Human Resources department.

  2. Unpaid Family and Medical Leave
Eligible employees, male and female, may be granted up to 12 weeks of unpaid leave per year for care of newborn or newly adopted children, a serious health condition of a child, spouse, or parent, or a serious health condition of their own under the terms of the university's Family and Medical Leave Policy reprinted as Appendix A.

3. Unpaid Personal Leave
When there are compelling personal reasons, which are not included under other policies described in this manual, leave without pay may be granted. Approval is at the discretion of an employee's respective vice president and the president.

To qualify for personal leave without pay, you must be a full-time employee and must have completed at least one (1) year of service. You must make your request in writing to both your supervisor and the associate vice president for human resources. The request must include the reason for the leave, the length of time requested, and the beginning and ending date of the leave.

Unpaid personal leave will be granted only when the department workload will permit your absence
without the necessity of replacement for the requested period. The university will waive this provision
only under exceptional circumstances. When you are on unpaid leave, you will not accrue sick leave or
vacation leave benefits. When you return to work, you will resume these accruals and will be returned
to the same position or equivalent position, with equivalent status, pay and other benefits, unless you would have been terminated whether or not leave had been taken.
