Tentative Program Dates: May 24—to July 1, 2008.

Course Description: Program will consist of an intensive five-week German language and culture course taught in Germany at the site of the original Wittenberg University, in the city of Reformation fame. (Lutherstadt-Wittenberg, after which our own university is named, is located just over an hour southwest of Berlin, the German capital.) The course looks at life in the City of Luther and its environs during the Reformation, during GDR times (1949-1990), and since the so-called “reunification” of eastern and western Germany. Beside morning classes there are afternoon outings to local sights of academic and popular cultural interest as well as regular “tutorials” (usually devoted to the preparation of group projects and/or phonetics training). In addition, there are weekly excursions to nearby places of international cultural-historical importance (Berlin, Halle, Leipzig and Wörlitz). The program is complemented by accommodation with host families in Wittenberg. In contrast to typical language and culture courses, this experience will include the completion of assignments through guided interaction with local Wittenbergers—that is to say, with both your host families and the wider town community.

Course Credits: 6 course credits will be awarded for successful completion of the program.

Course Cost: $3,320. This includes tuition, room and board with host family (including breakfast and evening meal), and all group excursions. It does not include your airfare, lunches or spending money.

To Apply: Eligible students must be in good standing and have successfully completed German 112 or higher by the date of departure. Applications and a non-refundable deposit of $300 are due by Friday, February 15 (Not March 1 as stated on the application form). Forms may be obtained from either David Barry (Hollenbeck 230) or JoAnn Bennett (Hollenbeck 126). Please note that “Additional Possible Program Application Materials” (listed on the application form) are not required.

Special Note Regarding Travel Plan: As far as those travel plans are concerned, please also bear in mind that the hopeful aim is to make the transatlantic flight as a group. (In years past students have generally congregated at New York JFK.) The principal advantage of such group travel is the fact that all participants can look forward to being picked up in Berlin and driven to Wittenberg. It also ensures that the important process of group bonding is already set in motion before departure from the US.
