Center for Musical Development

CENTER FOR MUSICAL DEVELOPMENT (CMD)

Through CMD children, teens, and adults obtain expert instruction on a variety of instruments. CMD provides high quality musical instruction and experiences to people of all ages in the community.

If you're looking for music lessons for a family member or yourself, here's what you'll find at Wittenberg CMD:

FACULTY
We select for the CMD faculty people of high qualifications and a sincere interest in teaching. Our instructors are drawn from both the Wittenberg Department of Music and professionals from the area. All are concerned with both the personal as well as musical development of students. Many CMD teachers practice their expertise as performing professionals, serving in local churches and schools and playing with ensembles ranging from show bands to the Springfield Symphony.

FACILITIES
All private lessons and group classes are taught on the Wittenberg campus. The University's Music Building, Krieg Hall, is an outstanding facility especially designed and equipped for musical instruction. It includes a recital hall which seats 125 people and serves as the site of CMD's recitals.

APPRECIATION / EXPERIENCE EMPHASIS
We believe music is not merely a discipline but a joy, not merely understanding but experience. Thus, the CMD faculty view recitals as a highly important component of the CMD learning experience for both youngsters and adults. All students are encouraged to participate in term-end recitals as well as other special recitals throughout the year. CMD recitals regularly attract a turnout of 50 to 100 people. Many CMD students go on to participate in school ensembles and the Springfield Youth Symphony.

Practicing for cello recital

We also make available to CMD families attendance at the variety of musical events (most of them free) which occur at Wittenberg throughout the year.

CONVENIENT ENROLLMENT AND PAYMENT
The CMD Director personally arranges assignment to teachers for private lessons. Registration is typically arranged for a 10-week term, with one 30-minute or 45-minute or 60-minute lesson per week. Installment payment is available for an $8 charge.

Private Lessons Charges
30-minute lessons $17.50 per lesson--$175 per 10-week term
45-minute lessons $26.25 per lesson--$262.50 per 10-week term
60-minute lessons $35 per lesson--$350 per 10-week term

Students also pay a $5 Registration fee per year (only one such fee charged per family).

Scholarships
CMD offers need-based partial scholarships toward children's lessons. Generally, a scholarship is awarded for each of the three ten-week terms running from September through May. We expect our scholarship students to attend lessons regularly, to practice diligently between lessons, and to perform in term-end recitals.

Private instruction for all levels - from beginners to professionals - is available in piano, organ, harpsichord and guitar as well as string, wind and percussion instruments. CMD also offers Suzuki violin program. Weekly lessons can be scheduled during the day, after school, evenings or Saturdays.

Group instruction is available for young children and adults to provide basic instruction as well as musical enrichment opportunities.

Some CMD classes are one-time-only events; others repeat throughout the year.
