Center for Musical Development

Through Wittenberg’s Center for Musical Development (CMD), children, teens and adults have access to expert instruction on a variety of instruments. Many CMD students go on to participate in school ensembles and the Springfield Youth Symphony.

Faculty - CMD faculty people are highly qualified and have a sincere interest in teaching. Our instructors are drawn from both the Wittenberg Department of Music and professionals from the area. Many of our professionals also perform in local churches and schools, and for ensembles ranging from show bands to the Springfield Symphony.

Facilities -
All private lessons and group classes are taught in the university's music building, Krieg Hall, an outstanding facility for musical instruction. Its 125-seat recital hall is used for CMD's recitals.

Private Instruction - For all levels - from beginners to professionals - is available in piano, organ, strings (including guitar and lute), wind instruments: flute, piccolo, clarinet, bassoon, saxophone, trumpet, french horn, and all percussion instruments; voice, and Suzuki Violin and piano. Weekly lessons can be scheduled during the day, after school, evenings, or Saturdays.

Group Instruction - Group instruction is available for young children and adults to provide basic instruction, as well as musical enrichment opportunities.

Performances - CMD faculty view recitals as an important component of the CMD learning experience for both youngsters and adults. All students are encouraged to participate in term-end recitals as well as other special recitals throughout the year.

Convenient Enrollment and Payment - The CMD Director personally arranges assignment to teachers for private lessons. Registration is typically arranged for a 10-week term, with one 30-minute or 45-minute or 60-minute lesson per week. Students also pay a $5 Registration fee per year (only one such fee charged per family).

Scholarships - CMD offers need-based partial scholarships toward children's lessons. Scholarships are awarded on an annual basis. Click here for Partial Scholarship Form.

Beginning January 2013, the Wittenberg Center for Musical Development will offer family scholarships for multiple lessons and classes in one family. Please apply each term: Winter, Spring, Summer, and Fall. If you are interested in obtaining a 20% scholarship for your second, third, etc. children, you must complete the form. Click here for Family Scholarships for Multiple Children.

We expect our scholarship students to attend lessons regularly, to practice diligently between lessons, and to perform in term-end recitals.
