LEAD - Teacher Licensure
TEACHER LICENSURE - SUMMARY FOR ADULTS

Use the Education link to see full details about the Education major, licensure programs, courses, and faculty. There you'll also find information on the Master of Arts in Education,* administered by the Education Department

Wittenberg has a strong cohort of adults seeking teacher licensure. Some chart this goal as part of their initial Bachelor’s degree experience while others are adding it to degree studies already completed elsewhere. With only occasional exceptions, all major courses for the various teacher preparation programs appear only in the Day schedule.

Licensure programs

  • Early Childhood - grades Preschool - 3
  • Middle Childhood - grades 4 - 9
  • High School - in a range of integrated subject areas
  • K - 12 specializations: Art, Foreign Languages, Music
  • Intervention Specialist (formerly Special Education)
*Note: The M.A. in Education is not a program for initial provisional licensure. It requires at least one year of professional teaching experience. Enrollment is through the Education Department, not SCE. If you already have a degree but are seeking licensure, you belong in the LEAD undergraduate post-bacc licensure program.

Features

  • solid academics
  • extensive field experience - with close faculty guidance
  • close support and advisement: you’ll know what to take every term through the completion date you set - and we’ll see that you get the courses you need
  • an enviable completion and placement record

* Quality matters - now more than ever
In keeping with the national demand for improved quality among teachers, as of 2000-01 the PRAXIS II exam administered by the State of Ohio and required for initial licensure, is undergoing a gradual upgrading for the next several years. We expect our Wittenberg candidates to continue their outstanding record on this exam, for we know that their academic preparation is the most thorough available. As you consider the choices for pursuing your licensure, some of which emphasize speed and ease rather than quality of preparation, you should weigh carefully the need for sound preparation.

In addition, in 2003 Wittenberg's Education Program attained National accreditation from the National Council for Accreditation of Teacher Education (NCATE). Wittenberg is one of the few private schools in Ohio to receive this recognition.

Placement
Our adult teacher candidates have established an outstanding record of success. Paving the way for you in your job search is the excellent reputation Wittenberg has developed in over 100 years of preparing teachers for schools in the local area and throughout the country.

Additional information
We’ll be happy to send you our brochure on Teacher Preparation for Adults, together with other detailed materials keyed to your licensure interest. And if you like, we’ll provide an evaluation of your transfer standing - including requirements remaining for post-bacc students. To get the proper evaluation, you need to specify which licensure you’re seeking and you need to provide a transcript or transcripts (unofficial copies OK). If you need help in clarifying this matter, get in touch. See Personal Contacts for contact options.
