LEAD - Money: Charges, Aid, Payment Options
Managing your Finances for a Wittenberg Education

Charges

(Credits are semester credits. One semester credit= 1.5 quarter credits)

Basic:
$365 per credit tuition (equates to $244 per quarter credit)
$60 per term registration and support fee

New students pay a $40 Admission fee - deferred for on-line applicants and waived by request in cases of severe hardship.

Other:
$155 per credit Audit tuition
$150 per term Lifelong Learner charge (students 60 or over)
$48 per credit Independent Study fee
Occasional miscellaneous fees for certain courses - listed in the term schedule

Financial Aid:

Government Funded
Adults at Wittenberg receive Pell Grants, Ohio Instructional Grants (OIG - newly extended to Summer study), Ohio Student Choice Grants (OSCG),* and Stafford and other student loans. For details, ask for our information sheet, Financial Aid for Adult/Non-Traditional Students.

* OSCG is a grant of $330 per semester given to any Ohio resident - regardless of need - enrolled for 12 or more credits at a private college. The only exclusions are completion of a Bachelor's degree or full-time college enrollment prior to July 1984. With an OSCG, your effective tuition for 12 credits is $338 per semester credit, equating to $227 per quarter credit, less than what you'd pay at a typical public university.

Adult Access Award (AAA)
This is a grant--not a loan--funded and administered directly by SCE. The purpose of the AAA program is to make Wittenberg charges more manageable for students who do not have the benefit of employer or VA benefits. AAA's come in amounts of $78 or $56 or $35 per credit, depending on need, up to 12 credits per semester.

We calculate your eligibility for the AAA using our own income guidelines, more realistic than those used for government aid. For instance, if you're single and had a gross income under $18,220 for the most recent year, you should receive the maximum award of $78 per credit. If you're married with a child, you can make up to $64,408 and still qualify for an award.

This award is real and significant. Students receiving the maximum AAA have an effective tuition less than what they'd pay at a state university--even with no other aid deducted. The AAA can be added to other grants, resulting in substantial--or even total--coverage of tuition charges. A single-sheet form is all it takes to apply, and this application covers every term of the year. You'll find it under Application Information. The review process is a matter of minutes.

Phi Theta Kappa Scholarship

Transfers who are members in good standing of this national honorary society for community college students can qualify for a half-tutition scholarship. This award applies to all terms and is renewable annually so long as the recipient maintains a cumulative Wittenberg GPA of 3.2. The PTK award can be combined with other forms of grant aid to a maximum of tuition and fees plus a book allowance of $100 per course. To date, 35 PTK Scholarship recipients have enrolled at Wittenberg. You'll find the PTK Scholarship application under Application Information.

Tuition Tax Credits

You can think of these as rebates for tuition you pay out of pocket. In effect since 1998, these benefits take the form of direct subtractions from your federal income tax due. The Hope Scholarship credit provides up to $1500 per year for tuition expenditures during the first two years of college. For years after that point, the Lifetime Learning credit provides up to $2000 per year for an indefinite number of years. For details, ask for our Tax Credit Information sheet.

Federal legislation also exempts from federal taxation the first $5250 you receive in employer tuition benefits each year.

Flexible Payment Options

We have designed our payment system to help our students manage their money for college studies with maximum convenience and flexibility.

First, we do not require tuition payment at registration. Your sole financial outlay as a new student is the $40 Admission fee (deferred for on-line applicants). Thus, most of our students register weeks or months prior to each term, without concern for coming up with significant sums. Once you receive a statement from our Student Accounts Office, you have three options:

OPTION ONE Pay in full--including a Student Loan check.

OPTION TWO Pay in installments or in full by the eighth Friday of the semester. Use the amount and frequency of payment that suits your budget.

OPTION THREE Pay after the term. If you receive either employer tuition coverage or VA benefits, you can choose to defer your payment until the third Friday after the semester. You must complete a Deferred Payment Agreement.

Failure to pay by the due date for Option Two or Three subjects the student to a $75 Late Payment Fee and the Inceptions of a 12% Per Annual Finance Charge. The Student also incurs a hold on an subsequent registration and is barred from obtaining an official transcipt.

MasterCard/VISA/Discover/American Express
You can use any of these credit cards for full or partial tuition payments and for books and supplies.
