Wittenberg University and Avetec are collaborating to off er a weeklong day camp for middle school girls interested in science, math, physics and computers. YOUNG WOMEN in SCIENCE (YWS) is designed to advance Science, Technology, Engineering and Math (STEM) skills for middle school girls as well as provide hands-on project-based learning experiences in a creative team atmosphere. YWS helps girls develop an interest in STEM, allowing them to work as a team on practical and innovative projects using the latest computer technology and lab equipment. YWS introduces girls to women working in STEM career fields.

Who can attend? Twenty-eight girls entering grades 7 and 8 in the upcoming school year will be selected for this camp. We are looking for students with an interest in how and why things work. We require two recommendations from teachers or administrators who know the student well.

Program Fee The $125 fee includes lunches, a camp T-Shirt and full registration to the Wings of Women Conference.

Financial Aid We are committed to including qualified girls regardless of their economic circumstances. An application for financial assistance will be included with Wittenberg's YWS response packet. Full and partial need-based scholarships are available.

Program Description

Experienced Wittenberg faculty members have designed instructional modules for the students. During YWS week, we will introduce computer programming along with their application to areas of scientific inquiry in STEM-related classes. The classes will emphasize experimental design and modeling. In support of this activity students will spend two days off campus. One day will be at Avetec, a not for profit research organization that is focused on modeling and simulation, data-driven computing and complex systems integration.

While at Avetec, students will be engaged in STEM careers while working with women on a simulated computer modeling project. Friday is highlighted by a trip to the Women with Wings Conference held at the National Aviation Hall of Fame located in Dayton, Ohio. During this day, students will engage in hands-on activities with aviation mentors while learning career pathways in STEM.

The program culminates Saturday with an opportunity for students to share with their families what they have learned through team PowerPoint presentations and a special graduation celebration.
