I would like to welcome you to Wittenberg for this 2007-2008 academic year. It promises to be an exciting one, filled with many changes. I'm looking forward to the year for many reasons, but especially because of the opportunity to support and encourage student organizations and their leaders—it's one of the most fulfilling parts of my job. Every day, I work with gifted men and women who devote their time and talents to one or more of the 128 student groups described in this directory. Faculty, staff and students have been talking these past months about what makes a Wittenberg education distinctive. Our excellent professors, challenging courses and emphasis on the liberal arts are key characteristics of it, and another is the creativity of Wittenberg students when it comes to educating us through organized programs and activities. Students are truly empowered to impact the life of our campus through the student organizations they create. Student organization members and leaders shape our college experiences and contribute to the important discussions that happen at Wittenberg each year. I hope that you will get involved in our community by joining a student group. You have a lot of choices. Leaf through the pages of this directory, noting the groups that appeal most to you, then take the initiative to contact one of the leaders and attend a meeting. If you are already involved in a student organization, I hope you will consider deepening your commitment to it by stepping into a leadership role. You would be in good company if you choose to do so. Every semester, there are about 400 students who hold student organization leadership positions. They regularly tell me that their involvement connects them with campus life and their fellow students, broadens their exposure to diverse ideas and people, helps them manage their time and set priorities, and enables them to put into practice the lessons they learn both in and out of Wittenberg classrooms. This directory is a tool for you, the student leader, too. You can use it to stay in touch with other campus organizations or seek them out for the purpose of using your combined resources to hold programs or take on common issues. I think this will be a year marked by change. I have some new projects I'll be taking on, and I'm looking forward to seeing what you will do, too.
