Mission: Wittenberg University’s fundamental purpose is to help educate the "creative minority of a civilization," to develop in harmony the intellectual, spiritual, aesthetic, social, and physical qualities which characterize wholeness of person.
Wittenberg strives to foster a strong sense of community and to maintain an environment where students can gain self-understanding, fulfill their potentials, accept their limitations, and learn to understand and care about people whose backgrounds and cultures differ from their own.
History: Wittenberg College, founded by German Lutherans in 1845 and renamed Wittenberg University in the 1960’s, is a private liberal arts college, located in Springfield, Ohio. Its academic strength coupled with its supportive atmosphere has kept it a forerunner in higher education. Wittenberg became co-educational in 1874 and has always encouraged and appreciated the diversity of all cultures. Broadwell Chin was the first African American graduate in 1879.
