ELIGIBILITY

Full-time students who have obtained 60 credit hours by the end of the 2007-2008 academic year are eligible to participate in the student rental selection process.

In addition to satisfying the 60 credit hour requirement, students’ billing accounts must have a zero balance by Monday, March 3, 2008, in order to be eligible to participate in the student rental selection process.

Keller Place and Sprecher Place Apartments.  For information on additional eligibility requirements, refer to that particular section.

GREEK STUDENTS

Full-time students who have obtained 60 credit hours by the end of the 2007-2008 academic year will be released to live in their Greek house.  Students intending to live in Greek houses during the 2008-2009 academic year do not need to attend lottery.  Those students will still receive a lottery number; however this number can be disregarded if living in their Greek house.

Students currently residing in Greek houses during the 2007-2008 academic year who wish to move into student rentals for the 2008-2009 academic year must receive clearance from Chapter and House Corporation Presidents in order to enter the lottery.  Chapter Presidents should submit names of chapter members cleared to enter the lottery to Jeanne Riedel, Office of Residence Life, by Thursday, Feb. 7, 2008.

COMMUTER STUDENTS

Any student who lives in the principal home of a parent or legal guardian or any student who is married and lives in or near Springfield is considered a commuting student and is exempt from the requirement to live in Wittenberg housing.  Commuter students must live within a 30-mile drive and be commuting from the principal residence of their parent(s) or legal guardian(s).  Should a commuter student move from the parental home, he/she is expected to move into Wittenberg housing.  Students must complete a Non-Residence Hall Housing form to secure permission for commuting.  If a commuter student decides to reside on campus they must fulfill the residence hall requirement prior to being released to a campus rental property.

STUDENT RENTALS

A list of Wittenberg owned rental properties can be found on this web site.  This list contains the entire stock of student housing.  Juniors currently residing in student rentals have the option to renew their contracts for the 2008-2009 academic year.  Therefore, all properties listed will not be available in the lottery.  After the renewal process is complete, updated lists of properties available for assignment through the selection process will be available on the web site and at Student Development beginning Friday, March 14, 2008.

Range, refrigerator, water, sewer, trash removal, and lawn service are included in the price of all units, and gas and/or electric services are included in the price of several units.  Refer to the list of Wittenberg owned rental properties for prices of individual units.  Refer to Keller Place and Sprecher Place Apartments pages for additional amenities available in these apartments.

As a Wittenberg student you have paid a one time $400.00 enrollment deposit, which will serve as your rental deposit.

UTILITIES

As prospective students and for budgeting purposes, it is important for students to research the cost of utilities for the rental units they are interested in renting.  Refer to the page titled How Much Will It Cost?  This work sheet will help you figure all costs involved.  Also, for comparison, the cost of a residence hall room and full meal plan is shown.  Toll free telephone numbers are listed for each utility.

Keep in mind that heating during the winter months can be quite expensive.  Window replacement and insulation of units is done on a schedule determined by Physical Plant, not at the request of students.  On or before your move-in date you will be required to contact all utility companies to have the service put in your name.  Students who are first-time customers to a utility should expect to pay a utility deposit.

SUBLEASING

Students are not permitted to sublet or assign a contract without first obtaining written consent.  Students desiring to sublet for the summer months are responsible for contacting Jeanne Riedel, Office of Residence Life, with the names of students planning to sublet.  Non-students will not be permitted to sublet.  In violation of this condition, all tenant(s) on the contract shall pay the sum of one hundred dollars ($100).  Individuals not authorized to be present will be required to vacate the premises in a timely manner and will also be subject to disciplinary action.

INSURANCE

Wittenberg University’s property insurance does not cover the personal effects of students.  Consult with your parent(s) or legal guardian(s) to determine whether you are covered under a homeowner’s insurance policy.  If you are not covered, we strongly recommend that you secure renter’s insurance for your protection against liability and loss of personal property.

STUDY ABROAD

If you are studying abroad for a semester you have several options.  If you are on a direct exchange program, you will be billed for your exchange program housing through the University.  If you are not on a direct exchange program, you may reserve a space in the rental unit in which you will reside when you return to Wittenberg by paying 50% of the semester’s rent for the semester you are abroad.  Or, you can find someone to contract for your space during the semester you are abroad.

RENEWAL

Students renewing contracts for the 2008-2009 academic year must submit one Student Rental Renewal Application per group at the Office of Residential Life by 4:00 PM, Friday, February 8, 2008.

FIRST-TIME AND ALL OTHER APPLICANTS

All other students seeking to live in student rentals, or who desire to move to a different student rental for the 2008-2009 academic year, must attend the assignment night for their particular bedroom size.  1, 4, & 5 bedroom apartments and houses will be assigned per lottery number on Tuesday, March 25th, 6:30 to 9:30 PM in Room 201 Shouvlin.  2 & 3 Bedroom houses and apartments will be assigned per lottery number on Thursday, March 26th, 6:30 to 9:30 PM in Room 201 Shouvlin.

Due to the process for assignment to Keller and Sprecher Apartments, one application per group must be submitted to the Office of Residence Life by 4:00 PM, Wednesday, March 12th.  The application can be found on this web site.

DISQUALIFICATION FOR APPLICATION

Students may submit only one application.  A student whose name appears on more then one application form will disqualify each group on whose application his/her name appears.

PERIOD OF CONTRACT

The contract period for most rental properties covers both fall and spring semesters of the 2008-2009 academic year, beginning Friday, August 1, 2008, and extending through Sunday, May 24, 2009.  Contracts may not be broken unless a student graduates or transfers from the University.  If a housemate withdraws before June 15, 2008, you and any other housemates will split the entire cost for the unit, or find another student to take their place.  If a housemate withdraws after June 15, 2008, the housing office may contact you during the year to meet with a student needing a place to live.  Placing another person in your rental would have to be a mutual agreement between all students involved.

Contracts for the Keller Place and Sprecher Place Apartments begin on Sunday, August 10, 2008, in order to provide sufficient time for work to be completed prior to move-in.

HOUSING FAIR – OPEN HOUSE

Students will have an opportunity to tour student rentals on Sunday, March 16, 2008, from 2:00 PM to 5:00 PM.  A list of all available housing can be found online or in the Rental office in Student Development beginning Friday, March 14, 2008.
