After nine years in the Office
of Advancement, Douglas J.
Goodman left Wittenberg in July
to serve as dean of admissions at
St. Margaret's-McTernan School
in Waterbury, Conn.
"Sometimes we have to
force ourselves, particularly with
a wonderful place like
Wittenberg, to leave—and leave
a good thing," said Goodman, '76,
on relinquishing his position as
director of alumni relations.
'There's an underlying spirit
— Ken Benne (Dean of Admission)
would use the word
'tigerness'— of dedication and
mutual cooperation at
Wittenberg, as well as a sense of
unpretentiousness and down-toearth
friendliness. I think many
of the same reasons I chose to go
here as a student are why people
choose to work here professionally."
During his tenure, the scope
of alumni relations has broadened
significantly, according to
Colleen S. Murray '86, president
of the Alumni Board and the
Alumni Association. "Eight years
ago, the alumni community was
less well-connected for lack of
regular off-campus programming.
Doug was instrumental in promoting
and establishing regular
club activities as well as programming," she said, noting a series of
regional alumni vision conferences
as the catalyst.
Charles A. Dominick, vice
president of institutional relations,
noted Goodman's work
with students as particularly effective
in advancing the alumni
effort. In touring with the
Wittenberg Choir, working with
student employees, or interacting
with the children of alumni, "he
brought his skills from admissions
to advancement and made ties
between the two," Dominick said.
Goodman said his work at
St. Margaret's-McTernan School
is an opportunity to further his
interests both personally and professionally.
"I feel I have a contribution
to make to the development
of young people," he said,
"and serving as dean of admissions
allows me to do this while
also applying my business and
marketing skills to education."
Goodman's two sons, Christopher
and Clark, also attend the
K-12 school.
"Witt's loss will be his new
professional career's gain," said
Murray. "Doug is one of the most
sensitive, intelligent, and warm
people that you'll ever meet, and
we'll all miss him."
The search is already underway
for a new alumni director.
