G. Luther Schnur, Lakeland, FL, died April 20, 1998. Following his retirement in 1962 after 36 years of service with the U.S. Forest Service, he spent two years on a teaching assignment in Ethiopia as an associate professor of forestry with Oklahoma State University. He received an honorary Doctor of Science degree from Wittenberg in 1965. Surviving are a daughter, Dorcas A. Schnur, ’55, a son, a brother, Paul N. Schnur, ’26, nieces, Nancy Schnur Griggs, ’64, and Anna Schnur Gibson, ’59, and her husband, Bruce A. Gibson, ’55.

Jessamae Uhl Myers, Sebring, OH, died May 31, 1998. She was an elementary school teacher with the Sebring Local School District and a 50-year member of the Order of Eastern Star Chapter 296 of Alliance. A sister and brother-in-law, Ralph E., ’42, and Betty Uhl LaFontaine, ’42, survive. Preceding her in death were her parents, Bert B., 1895, ’00S, and Minnie Christen Uhl, ’00, a sister, Cathryn Uhl Mann, ’25, and a brother, Albert C. Uhl, ’36.

Elsie Roth Perrott, Seattle, WA, died Aug. 5, 1998. She was a 46-year member of University Lutheran Church, where she served as library chair. Surviving are two daughters, including Susan Perrott Coar, ’55, six grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren. Preceding her in death were her husband, Orrin J. Perrott, ’25, a sister, A. Katharine Roth, ’32, and a cousin, David E. Mowrey, ’28.
Lillie Beekman Rowand, London, OH, died Aug. 11, 1998. A 38-year active member of the London First United Methodist Church, she retired after 29 years as a teacher in Clark County. She was also a member of several professional and civic organizations. Survivors include a daughter, two grandchildren, three great-grandchildren, a brother, and several nieces and nephews.

David G. Horn, Lebanon, OH, died Feb. 15, 1998. After graduation he was employed by Armco Steel Company where he worked for 41 years as a Works Accountant until his retirement in 1969. He was a member of First United Methodist Church for more than 60 years. His wife, Sarah Elizabeth Class Horn, ’28, preceded him in death. Survivors include a daughter, Susan Class Horn Kjerland, ’55, and three grandchildren.
Homer A. Kuenzli, London, OH, died May 3, 1998. During World War II, he was a physics professor at Wittenberg instructing Army Air Corps pilots. He was a teacher, a principal and a superintendent with several school districts in Ohio, and resident state examiner at Bowling Green (OH) State University. Following his retirement, he served as a bank examiner with the Mid-American Bank of Bowling Green. A member of St. Mark’s Lutheran Church, he is survived by his wife, a son, James H. Kuenzli, ’63, a daughter, four grandchildren, three great-grandchildren, a sister and two brothers. Preceding him in death were two brothers, Curtis B. Kuenzli, ’31, and E. Frederick Kuenzli, ’29, and two cousins, Irvin R. Kuenzli, ’21, and Wilbur D. Kuenzli, ’37.
Former Troy (OH) mayor, Oscar S. Metcalf died Dec. 2, 1996. He was honored with the Troy Chamber of Commerce Award in 1976 for his many outstanding contributions to the community. After 44 years of service with the Hobart Corp., he retired as assistant treasurer before joining the law firm of Faust, Harrelson, Fulker and McCarthy, retiring in 1991. He was a member of Trinity Episcopal Church. A daughter, two granddaughters and a great-granddaughter survive. His wife, Harriet Wright Metcalf, ’29, preceded him in death.

oEdith Leslie Nicely, New Smyrna Beach, FL, died Sept. 12, 1998. A homemaker, she also taught kindergarten, worked as a comptometer operator at Wright Field during World War II and later as an assistant college librarian. She was an active member of St. Paul’s United Methodist Church and the Order of the Eastern Star. Survivors include a son, two daughters, three grandsons and 10 great-grandchildren. Her husband, Howard P. Nicely, Sr., ’27, predeceased her.

Edward C. Lafferty, Springfield, OH, died Aug. 10, 1998. An active member of First United Church of Christ and several fraternal organizations, he retired from Speco Corp. as a mechanical engineer with 28 years service. A musician, he was a piano tuner following his retirement. Survivors include a son, James E. Lafferty, ’69, and a daughter. His wife, Marguerite Schulz Lafferty, ’63, predeceased him.
Margaret A. Pettit, Springfield, OH, died Aug. 21, 1998. An active 48-year member of Covenant Presbyterian Church, she retired from the Springfield Public Schools after 35 years of service. Three nephews survive.
Russell G. Ramage, Gulfport, MS, died Dec. 17, 1997. He was a special services director. His wife, three sons and eight grandchildren survive.

oMary Fritch Aten, Macungie, PA, died April 29, 1997. An active member of Grace Lutheran Church and several community organizations, she served as a volunteer at Muhlenberg Medical Auxiliary. Surviving are two sons, a daughter, 10 grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren. Her husband, Robert I. Aten, ’30, preceded her in death.
Jane Gunderman King, a retired elementary school teacher and librarian, lives in Savoy, IL. An active member of her church, she enjoys traveling.

A retired physicist and operations research analyst at Wright Patterson Air Force Base, Orin P. Gard has moved to Pemberville, OH. He is an active member of his church and various fraternal and professional organizations.
Ernest E. Habig, Dunedin, FL, died May 14, 1998. After 40 years as pastor of St. Luke’s Lutheran Church, Park Ridge, IL, he retired to become minister of visitation with Prince of Peace Lutheran Church, Largo, FL. Survivors include his wife, a daughter, Sharon Habig Sahr, ’62, two granddaughters and three great-grandchildren.

Laura Overholt Marquis, Big Rapids, MI, died Dec. 28, 1997. An educator, she taught at public schools in Ohio, Shadron (NB) State College and Ferris State College. She was a member of the First United Methodist Church and the D.A.R. Surviving are a son, a daughter, five grandchildren, two great-grandchildren, a sister, and several nieces, nephews and cousins.
Edith Swickard McLaughlin, Richmond, OH, died Oct. 28, 1997. A teacher, she retired from the Edison School District in 1973 after 41 years. She was owner/operator of the Home Restaurant and a member of the United Presbyterian Church and many community organizations. Several nieces and nephews survive.
Elsie Hopkins Weikert, Springfield, OH, died Sept. 29, 1998. A teacher with the North Hampton and Northwestern Schools, she was a member of the Grace Bible Church. She is survived by a son, two daughters, 13 grandchildren, 22 great-grandchildren, four great-great-grandchildren, a brother, Everett H. Hopkins, ’34, and several nieces and nephews, including Christopher E. Hopkins, ’97. Preceding her in death were her husband, Wilson V. Weikert, ’32, and two brothers, Earl F. Hopkins, ’31, and Walter C. Hopkins, ’35.

Florence George Ortiz, nee Catherine Guthrie, Marion Station, MD, died Sept. 13, 1998. She was a coloratura soprano whose career included radio appearances and concerts in the United States, Canada and Europe, and in movies, and on talk shows. In 1954 she received an honorary master of arts degree from Wittenberg. Several cousins survive.

Helen Moore Clabaugh, Springfield, OH, died June 13, 1998. She was a member of Prince of Peace United Brethren Church. After 41 years of teaching in various schools, she retired from the New Carlisle School System. She is survived by a brother, a sister, and several nieces and nephews.
J. Frank Rothwell, London, OH, died June 7, 1998. Having served as a teacher and a principal at several schools in Madison County for 37 years, he was inducted into the London Academic Hall of Fame in May 1998. He was a member of the Summerford United Methodist Church and a 50-year member of the Chandler Lodge 138 Free and Accepted Masons. Survivors include a son, two grandchildren, a great-grandson and a sister. His wife, Dorotha Deck Rothwell, ’63, preceded him in death.
Frances Wilson Smith, Columbus, OH, died July 31, 1998. She taught at several schools in Ohio, Mississippi, California, England, Libya, North Africa and Germany. Her survivors include three sons, three grandchildren, four great-grandchildren and a sister. Her parents, W. Herbert, ’12, and Mary Dean Wilson, ’12, preceded her in death.

Howard E. Whitacre, formerly of Springfield, OH, died Aug. 14, 1998 in Naples, FL. A self-employed pharmacist, he owned and operated Whitacre’s Pharmacy. A member of St. Bernard Catholic Church, he is survived by his wife, a daughter, a step-son, two grandchildren, including Frank H. Fuschino, ’84, three great-grandchildren, two sisters and a brother.

William R. Scholle, Corona del Mar, CA, died Aug. 4, 1997. He was chairman of the Scholle Corp., Irvine, CA. His wife, three sons, a daughter and six grandchildren survive.

oArthur R. Bussard, Dayton, OH, died June 5, 1998. After 11 years service, he retired in 1978 as superintendent from the Miamisburg City School District. He also served as superintendent with the Graham Local Schools and as assistant superintendent, teacher and coach with the Vandalia-Butler School District. A World War II Army Air Corps veteran, he is survived by a son and three grandchildren.

Roberta Crosby Calhoon, Kettering, OH, died April 24, 1998. A retired employee of the L.M. Berry Co., she was active in numerous charitable and service organizations. She is survived by a son and two daughters, including Judith A. Calhoon, ’67.

M. Louise Steele, Springfield, OH, died July 19, 1998. She was a teacher with the Springfield City Schools and a member of Central United Methodist Church. There are no known survivors. A sister, Lillian M. Steele, ’40, preceded her in death.

James W. Miller, Monroe, OH, died June 14, 1998. Following his retirement as a chaplain with the U.S. Army, he served 11 years as chaplain at Grady Memorial Hospital, Delaware, OH. His wife, two daughters, a son and six grandchildren survive.
Virginia Kite Rehl, Springfield, OH, died July 19, 1998. She was a teacher with the Springfield City Schools and a substitute teacher at Possum School. A member of Trinity Lutheran Church, she is survived by three sons, two daughters, 13 grandchildren, a great-grandchild, a sister, a brother and a number of nieces and nephews.

Rodney L. Heinze, Mt. Clemens, MI, died May 2, 1998. A retired U.S. Marine colonel, he was awarded the Silver Star, two Bronze Stars and two Purple Hearts for courage under fire during World War II and the Korean War. He owned Wytliff-Heinze Claims Adjusting Co., Mt. Clemens, for many years and served as a regional insurance claims manager with the Preferred Risk Mutual Insurance Co. He is survived by six daughters, two sons and 10 grandchildren.

oEdna Houser Cooper, formerly of Springfield, OH, died May 29, 1998, in Memphis, TN. A piano teacher for 63 years, she participated in workshops at the Julliard School of Music, New York, NY, the Cincinnati (OH) Conservatory, the University of Oklahoma and the University of Memphis. Several nieces survive.

A former Home Economics instructor at Wittenberg, Margaret Loudenback Prichard lives in Kent, OH. She teaches Sunday School at the Kent United Church of Christ.
Dorothea Huffman Snyder, Hudson, OH, died June 20, 1998. Earlier that day she had been awarded the Alumni Citation, in absentia, at ceremonies during Wittenberg’s Alumni Weekend. She had recently retired after 26 years of service with the Hudson Schools, most recently as principal at McDowell Elementary School. Surviving are a son, a daughter and two grandchildren. Preceding her in death were an uncle, Luther D. Smith, ’25, and cousins, John E. Grube, ’39, and Dorothy Krautwater Mumma, ’20.

Max A. Grob, Lebanon, OH, died Oct. 1, 1997. He was a former school principal and director of public relations with a computer technology center in Dayton, OH. His wife and several nieces and nephews survive.

Mary Maurice Greenawalt, Ashtabula, OH, died June 20, 1996. A teacher in the Ashtabula City and Harbor School Districts for 27 years, she authored a methods manual in special education used extensively by the Ohio Department of Education. She retired in 1987. Survivors include four sons, two daughters, two brothers, James W. Maurice, ’51, and William B. Maurice, ’47, a sister-in-law, Mary Huffman Maurice, ’46, several nieces and nephews, including Jean Maurice Kalan, ’71, John A. Maurice, ’76, and Martin W. Maurice, ’73, and his wife, Gail Hawkins Maurice, ’73. Her parents, Estell D., ’20, and Beulah Stone Maurice, ’24, ’64, predeceased her.
Myron E. Wirick, Stow, OH, professor emeritus of special education at Kent (OH) State University, died Oct. 6, 1997. Following his retirement, he became a consultant for Zaner Bloser, handwriting specialist, and for Newsweek in the Ohio area. Several nieces and nephews survive. A sister, Rebecca Wirick Mikle, ’31, preceded him in death.
