oCarl Knoedel, Centerville, OH, died June 3, 1998. During World War II, he served with the U.S. Army in Alaska and at Ft. Lewis, WA. An elder of Southminster Presbyterian Church, he retired in 1990 from Standard Register Co. as a forms systems supervisor. His wife and several cousins survive.

Roger M. Bishop, a recently retired professor of physical education at Wartburg College, Waverly, IA, received the Honor Fellow Award from the American Alliance for Health, Physical Education, Recreation and Dance.
Jean Tussing Smiley, Manassas, VA, married Emanuele Fontana, May 30, 1998. Before her retirement, she was an executive secretary in the superintendent’s office with the Prince William County Schools. An active member of her church, she is now a hospital volunteer.

William M. Berry has been honored by the New Carlisle (OH) community for his volunteer service. As director of the Community Chorus, he founded the New Carlisle Chatauqua Council, which provides free summer concerts in the park. He is also involved in his church and other civic organizations in Clark County.
Charles V. Seng, Palm Beach Gardens, FL, is director of medical underwriting with Professional Planners Marketing Group, Inc., North Palm Beach, FL.

Robert M. and Barbara Hahn Belles, ’58, have retired and live in El Paso, TX. Robert, a minister, was pastor of Good Shepherd Lutheran Church. Barbara was a social worker for the State of New Mexico.
Novice G. Fawcett, Columbus, OH, died June 19, 1998. A graduate of Kenyon College, he was awarded honorary degrees from many universities including Wittenberg. His educational service spanned 65 years with his greatest career achievement being the eighth president of The Ohio State University from 1956-72. A daughter, two grandchildren, five great-grandchildren and a brother survive.

Donald H. Stone, Jacksonville, FL, died Oct. 15, 1997. A veteran of the U.S. Air Force, he was a professional land surveyor. He is survived by his wife, five daughters, six grandchildren and a sister and brother-in-law, Robert C., ’52, and Barbara Stone Badertscher, ’55.

Oliver Krug Klafter, ’61S, Middletown, OH, died Aug. 18, 1998. Pastor of Zion Lutheran Church for 34 years, he was also an active member of the Southern Ohio Synod of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America. Surviving are his wife, Arlene Bock Klafter, ’61, and three sons, including Douglas I. Klafter, ’88.

Jack Bartley, Miamisburg, OH, died July 27, 1998. An educator for 46 years, he retired from the Miamisburg City Schools after 31 years of service. During the Korean War, he served in the U.S. Army 101st Airborne Division. He was an active member of Central Christian Church and the community. Survivors include his wife, a son, a daughter and two grandchildren.
Jeanette Bury Dunn, Oregon, OH, died Jan. 14, 1997. She was a school teacher with the Genoa School system for 28 years. A son, two daughters, 10 grandchildren, a brother and a sister survive.
William K. Farish, Springfield, OH, died Sept. 21, 1998. Survivors include his mother, a daughter, two sons, four grandchildren, a sister, a brother and several nieces, nephews and cousins, including Alfred V. Kauffman, ’54.

Susan Brooke Falk, Hellerup, Denmark, died April 19, 1998. She was a leading occupational therapist at the Copenhagen City Hospital. Surviving are her husband, Bent Falk, ’66, two sons and a grandson.

A former teacher and director of Christian education and youth ministry, Betty Hammer Sidebottom has retired to Ft. Myers, FL.

John R. O’Connor, Springfield, OH, died Sept. 26, 1998. A retired teacher, he was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church and served with the U.S. Navy during World War II. His survivors include a son, J. Terrence O’Connor, ’65, two grandchildren and a sister. His wife, Katherine Mross O’Connor, ’64, preceded him in death.
On June 21, 1998, Mary “Marty” Garber Ray retired as principal of Red Bird Elementary School, Madison, OH. She has moved to Black River, MI.

On May 17, 1998, Jean R. Callihan of Tower, MN, received a master of divinity degree and a master of arts degree in marriage and family therapy from the Louisville (KY) Presbyterian Theological Seminary.
Leland R. Walden, Springfield, OH, died July 10, 1998. An active member of Oakland Presbyterian Church, he taught in the Springfield City and Mad River-Green School Districts for 36 years. A veteran of the U.S. Army Reserves, he is survived by his wife, a daughter, a son, two grandchildren, a sister and two brothers.
