’51 Ralph E. Ford, Springfield, OH, died Dec. 18, 1998. A member of St. John’s Evangelical Lutheran Church, he worked for 45 years as a pharmacist for Marshall’s Pharmacy and Western Pharmacy, retiring in 1996. In the U.S. Army during World War II, he served in the 255th Infantry as a first-class anti-tank gunner and was awarded the combat infantryman’s badge. He is survived by a sister and brother-in-law, and many nieces, nephews and cousins.
Donald P. Huffman, a U.S. Navy veteran, died Nov. 16, 1998 in Springfield, OH. As a product manager with Merck & Co., he introduced the first hypertension drugs to the market. He owned The City Bakery of Urbana for many years and then operated Baker Boy in Springfield until his retirement in 1992. His wife, a son, two granddaughters, two brothers and several nieces and nephews survive.

Robert I. Kipniss, a master printmaker, served as a consultant to the assistant curator of the National Academy/Museum and School of Fine Arts for a recent exhibition. Treasures Revealed: A Survey of 19th and 20th Century Works on Paper is the first exhibition to give significant exposure to the Academy’s little known but impressive collection of works on paper. He lives in Ardsley-on-Hudson, NY.
Edith Kellar Mahaney, executive director of P.H. Sullivan Foundation, is director of P.H. Sullivan Museum and Genealogy Library and is the founding and current director of Zionsville (IN) Munce Art Center. She recently received the “Distinguished Hoosier Award” from the governor for her accomplishments in preserving the heritage and enriching the culture of the State of Indiana.
L. Jane Weber Walter, Columbus, OH, died Aug. 31, 1998. She taught for more than 25 years with the New Lebanon, Fairview Park and Columbus Public Schools. She was an active member of Holy Trinity Lutheran Church and her community. Survivors include her husband, two sons, two grandsons and a sister.

Kermon “Jack” Murray, Springfield, OH, died Oct. 1, 1998. He was a veteran of the U.S. Navy, having served in World War II and the Korean Conflict, and was retired from the Navy Reserve. A member of Northside Baptist Church, he was retired from Wright Patterson Air Force Base. Survivors include his wife, four sons, including Kermon A. Murray, ’99, two daughters, 12 grandchildren, three great-grandchildren, and 11 brothers and sisters.

Gleda Myers Holt, Phoenix, AZ, died Oct. 5, 1998. She was a school teacher for the Springfield School District, retiring in 1978. A niece and a nephew survive. Her second husband, Edward E. Holt, ’54H, predeceased her.

Marvin G. Schamaun, formerly of Lima, OH, died Aug. 24, 1998, in Plain City, OH. He served as a United Methodist pastor for several congregations in Ohio during his career. An active member of several fraternal organizations, he was a U.S. Army Air Corps veteran of World War II. Survivors include his wife, two sons, a step-son, two step-daughters, 18 grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

Jerry L. and Carol Walthall Schmalenberger, ’58, live in Pittsburg, CA. Jerry continues to lecture overseas in Argentina, Uruguay and Suriname. He is the author of four recent articles published in The Lutheran, a general-purpose monthly publication of the Evangelical Lutheran Church, and two books, the latest being These Will Preach. Frances Wiltshire Mahncke, Washington, D.C., retired from the Central Intelligence Agency and now works part-time with the Alexandria Seaport Foundation.

Carolyn Brehm Winkhouse, Springfield, OH, died Oct. 6, 1998. She was employed for 30 years by the Northeastern Local School District as an elementary school teacher and guidance counselor at Northridge School. She was the author of a grant that established the elementary guidance program. A 50-year member of First Lutheran Church, she is survived by her husband, three daughters, a son, five grandchildren and several nieces, nephews and cousins. Two brothers, Charles M. Brehm, ’40, and Robert W. Brehm, ’47, preceded her in death.

Gertrude Lothschuetz Bennett, Springfield, OH, died Oct. 23, 1998. She retired from teaching in 1980 after having taught at St. Bernard School for 14 years and with the Springfield City Schools for 15 years. A notary public for more than 60 years, she was a member of St. Bernard Catholic Church. Her survivors include two sons, six grandchildren and several great-grandchildren.
