Community service extends beyond students at Wittenberg as Sandra Smith Spencer, library cataloging, knows firsthand. Last fall, she and her husband, Paul, served as guardians to 35 World War II veterans as part of Honor Flight.
Founded in 2005, Honor Flight flies World War II veterans to Washington, D.C., to visit the memorial erected in their honor. On an Honor Flight trip, all expenses are covered for the veterans, including flight, meals and ground transportation. Oxygen tanks and motorized wheelchairs are provided for veterans who need them, and each flight has a medical attendant. Volunteers pay for their own tickets.
“I encourage all World War II veterans to go,” said Smith-Spencer, who plans to participate again. “It was such a great honor to be able to escort these men and women.”
