Handcrafted To Help:
Annual Empty Bowls Sets New Record To Assist Foodbank
A national fund-raiser started in 1990 by a Michigan high school art teacher to help students creatively raise money, Empty Bowls has grown rapidly in popularity at Wittenberg. During its inaugural year, 100 ceramic bowls were thrown, but this year that number climbed to 632 bowls, all of which were purchased by event guests in less than two hours. Guests then filled the bowls with a variety of soups, salads and breads at the event. Associate Professor of Art Scott Dooley, who has spearheaded the project since his arrival in 1999, admits that he looks forward to the celebration of talents and hard work. “It focuses our awareness on the fact that art can be used to truly help others in our community,” he said. Communication major Anna List ’10 served as student coordinator for the 2008 event. List also worked with Anna Plataniotis, events coordinator for Second Harvest Foodbank run by Catholic Social Services, in getting the word out, helping with the food and meeting with donors. In addition to faculty, students and staff throwing bowls, local potter Peter Entorf also contributed 120 bowls he threw in his studio. Second Harvest receives 100 percent of the proceeds generated by the event. To date, Wittenberg’s Empty Bowls events have raised more than $86,000 for Second Harvest.
