F. William Hirt, chairman of the board of Erie
Indemnity Company, founded by his father, H. Orth
Hirt, class of 1911, died July 13, 2007, at the age of
81. Under his leadership, Erie became one of the most
highly regarded property/casualty companies in the
country.
Throughout his 41-year career at the Fortune 500
company, Hirt also remembered the world beyond
business, which his alma mater recognized. In 1989,
Wittenberg honored him with an Alumni Citation
Award for placing service to humanity ahead of personal
recognition or gain. Ten years later, the university
recognized him again with its most prestigious award,
the Class of 1914 Award, for service above and beyond
what might be expected of any contributor to the
college’s welfare. The Hirt name lives on inside the
university’s history department through an endowed
faculty chair named after Hirt’s father.
A WWII veteran and member of Phi Kappa Psi
fraternity, Hirt served in numerous civic and charitable
organizations. Surviving are his wife, two daughters,
two grandchildren, three step-grandchildren, three
great-grandchildren, a sister, Susan Hirt Hagen ’57,
several nieces and nephews, including Sarah Hagen
McWilliams ’88, and cousins, Marjorie Koons
Leemhuis ’45, Carolyn Leemhuis Lingenfelter ’52,
Stephen D. Hirt ‘67 and Andrew C. Hirt ’97. Preceding
him in death were his father and a cousin, Robert C.
Leemhuis ’47.
