Daniel Kazez, associate professor of music, recently completed his fifth
international concert tour with performances in six major concert halls
in three Eastern European countries.
The
concert venues included Congress Hall in Prague and Jesuit Hall in Cesky Krumlov,
both located in the Czech Republic; Herbst Palace in Lodz, Osrodek Promocji
Kultury in Czestochowa, and Centrum Kultury Zydowskiej in Krakow, all in Poland;
and Balint Zsido Kozossegi Haz in Budapest, Hungary.
“The two sites in Krakow and Budapest were Jewish cultural centers,
among the first such institutions to open in Eastern Europe since the Holocaust,”
Kazez explained.
Kazez’s performance in Lodz, the second largest city in Poland, was
recorded for rebroadcast on Polish radio and television. “I chose
to perform in Lodz because my grandfather grew up there. It was a little
like a homecoming for me.”
His four previous concert tours have been in Great Britain, Morocco, India,
and Western Europe, including London, Paris, Brussels, Berlin, Salzburg,
Florence and Rome.
Kazez, who has taught at Wittenberg for 13 years, is currently completing
a study examining the diverse music found in the Jewish liturgy of Italy.
His concerts in Eastern Europe were supported by a grant from the Ohio
Arts Council’s International Program.
