We at U.S. News deeply regret the fact that Wittenberg University was left
off our list of Best National Liberal Arts Colleges in the August 30, 1999 issue
of our magazine.
This
was solely due to a production error and not to any omissions by Wittenberg
in our annual colleges survey. Indeed, perusers of our website or U.S. News'
America's Best Colleges book for the year 2000 will find Wittenberg listed.
...
We hope that the three million page-visitors to our website each week, year-round,
and the one million or so buyers of our college guide book will somewhat mitigate
our inadvertent error in the magazine.
The fact that U.S. News depends heavily on the cooperation of universities
like Wittenberg to give us the data that make our rankings possible is one more
reason that we regret our error.

Editor’s Note: The following was submitted in response to the university’s
first press release concerning U.S. News & World Report’s “America’s
Best Colleges” issue, published Aug. 30, 1999. It should also be noted
that Dr. E. Charles Chatfield retired in May 1999.
I felt compelled to respond. I graduated in the Class of ’70 and have
always valued the education I received at Wittenberg.
I had extremely positive experiences with my classes and felt the level of
integrity amongst the staff was excellent. I was particularly impressed with
the high level of student-professor interaction.
As just one of many examples, at one point I was tempted to transfer to a university
with a wider variety of classes offered in my major, but was encouraged by Dr.
Charles Chatfield to remain and never regretted it.
He subsequently encouraged me to submit an application to the American University
studies program and with his guidance, I was accepted. I know that Dr. Chatfield
still teaches at Wittenberg, and you must be very proud of that fact.
I always knew that Wittenberg was considered one of the best colleges in the
state as well as the country when I attended and am pleased to know that the
tradition of excellence continues.
