Wittenberg
welcomes four new coaches to athletics program
Garnett Purnell, director of athletics and recreation, has announced the
appointments of four new coaches to the athletics program.
Fran
Kulas has been appointed as head women’s soccer coach.
A graduate of the University of Delaware, Kulas recently served as the assistant
coach at his alma mater as well as the head goalkeeper coach for the Olympic
Development Program.
He was honored as the 1999 Flight “A” conference Coach of the
Year. Kulas will inherit a team that went 4-14-1 last season and finished
sixth in the North Coast Athletic Conference.
Serving
as the men’s and women’s head track and field and cross country
coach for the Tigers will be Steven Shutt.
A former assistant coach at Hillsdale College and Slippery Rock University,
Shutt is a graduate of Allegheny College where he was a four-year letterwinner
and conference champion.
Brett
Steele will be serving as the head men’s golf coach and assistant men’s
basketball coach for the Tigers.
Steele, a graduate of Muskingum College, has coached both golf and basketball
at his alma mater for the past eight years. He has also served in coaching
capacities as the men’s tennis coach and cross country coach.
Steele will assist head coach Bill Brown and serve as the junior varsity
coach in basketball. Grace Caraveaggio has been appointed head field hockey
coach.
She inherits a team that has won the conference title the past three seasons
and finished the 1998 season with a 16-5 overall record and a bid to the national
tournament. Caravaggio, a native of Latrobe, Penn., is a graduate of Slippery
Rock University.
