Mildred Kyle Lafferty, formerly of Springfield, OH, died Nov. 9, 1999 in Tennessee.
An active member of Christ Episcopal Church, she had taught art and music
in Clifton and Springfield. Two children, eight grandchildren and five great-grandchildren
survive.
Hazel Showalter Miller, Crestline, OH, died Sept. 15, 1999. A member of First
English Lutheran Church, she is survived by a daughter, Margaret Miller Baker,
’49, a son, a foster daughter, Eva Fuchs Cash, ’69, 10 grandchildren
and 20 great-grandchildren. Preceding her in death was her husband, Robert
H. Miller, ’25, ’28S.
1926
Arthur H. Abplanalp, ’29S, Elkhart, IN, died July 28, 1999. Following
his commission in the U.S. Army in 1942, he served 55 months active duty as
assistant chief of chaplains of the 3rd Service Command and retired from the
U.S. Army Reserve with the rank of lieutenant colonel in 1962. He was senior
pastor of Grace Lutheran Church for 19 years.
1928
Carrie McClain Bradley, Tiro, OH, died Aug. 7, 1999. A lifelong member of
Crouse Memorial Lutheran Church and an R.N., she was employed at Wilkins Air
Force Depot, Shelby, OH. Surviving are three daughters, a step-daughter, 10
grandchildren, nine great-grandchildren, a sister and a step-sister.
Norma Sarver Rushaw, St. Paris, OH, died Oct. 10, 1999. She retired in 1962
following a teaching career of 31 years. An active member of United Methodist
Church and her community, she is survived by two daughters and four grandchildren.
1930
Frieda Friesinger Beekman, New Brockton, AL, died May 29, 1999. She was a
member of Otterbein United Methodist Church. Surviving are a niece and two
nephews.
Helen Maurer Maus, Dover, OH, died Aug. 13, 1999. At Wittenberg, she was
a member of ADP sorority. An active member of St. John’s United Church
of Christ and the community, she had won awards for her dried flower arrangements.
Survivors include a daughter, Marilyn Maus Scribner, ’54, a grandson,
a great-granddaughter and a sister-in-law. Her husband, Francis L. Maus, ’28,
a brother, Victor R. Maurer, ’31, and a son-in-law, William G. Scribner,
’52, preceded her in death.
1931
Rhea Endter Augustine, formerly of Cincinnati, OH, died Dec. 28, 1997, in
Torrance, CA. A faculty member of Wittenberg’s School of Music from
1928 to 1931, she was active in various musical organizations in Cincinnati.
She is survived by a daughter.
Merle K. Singer, Massillon, OH, died Feb. 5, 1998. He was a member of PKA
fraternity at Wittenberg. During World War II, he was a captain in the U.S.
Army Medical Corps and served as a surgeon at Normandy and in the Battle of
the Bulge. A retired physician and surgeon, he was a member of Faith Community
Fellowship and Clinton Lodge No. 47 F&AM. He also served as health commissioner
for the city of Massillon and later for Columbiana County, OH. His wife survives.
Roger L. Whittington, Springfield, OH, died Dec. 9, 1999. A member of Good
Shepherd Lutheran Church and several fraternal organizations, he was retired
from real estate sales. Survivors include a daughter, Carolyn Whittington
Bradley, ’61, ’69, a son-in-law, Robert C. Bradley, ’56,
a step-son, Stephen J. Rich, ’77, five grandchildren, five great-grandchildren
and numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his wife, Mildred
Grundtisch Whittington, ’30, two daughters, Shirley Whittington Neuhardt,
’55, and Barbara Whittington LeBlanc, ’54, and a son-in-law, Frederick
Neuhardt, ’58.
1932
James A. Bright, San Mateo, CA, died Sept. 7, 1998. A member of FMD fraternity
at Wittenberg, he served in the U.S. Air Corps during World War II. He was
retired from his position as owner of Hygiea-Phone Service. His wife, a daughter
and a son survive. Preceding him in death were his father, George S. Bright,
1896S, and a brother, Philip S. Bright, ’27.
Margaret Kite Burnham, Springfield, OH, died Oct. 16, 1999. She is survived
by two nephews. A sister, Lenore Kite Harner, ’31, predeceased her.
Dortha Clemans Dement, Springfield, OH, died Nov. 6, 1999. She taught school
in Lawrenceville, OH, for eight years. Surviving are a brother and numerous
nieces and nephews, including Tamara Rehm Givens, ’88, and William K.
Rehm, ’85. She was preceded in death by two sisters, Ruth Clemans Coil,
’31, and Helen Clemans Rehm, ’30.
1933
Olive Harmison Donnelly, Long Beach, CA, died Sept. 29, 1999. She taught school
in a one-room school house in Catawba as well as other locations in Clark
County (OH) and later in California. A member of Hillside Church of God, she
is survived by seven children, seven grandchildren, six great-grandchildren,
a sister and a brother.
Robert E. Harman, Upper Sandusky, OH, died July 23, 1999. He was a member
of LCA fraternity at Wittenberg. Until his retirement in 1977, he taught as
well as coached football and baseball at various high schools in Ohio. A 60-year
member of Warpole Masonic Lodge #176 and other fraternal organizations, he
was also an Ohio licensed real estate broker. Survivors include a daughter,
two grandchildren and a brother.
William E. Makley, ’36S, Monroe, OH, died Sept. 1, 1999. A member of
DSF fraternity at Wittenberg, he was a pastor, most recently serving Resurrection
Lutheran Church of Lebanon (OH). He was also a founding board member of Big
Brothers and Big Sisters of Warren County (OH) and worked with youth through
the juvenile court system. His wife, a son, Luther W. Makley, ’66, a
daughter, Luanne Makley Johns, ’70, and six grandchildren survive.
1934
Carveth P. Mitchell, ’37S, ’53H, Charlotte, NC, died June 15,
1999. A member of PKA fraternity at Wittenberg, he conducted preaching missions
at U.S. Air Force bases in the United States as well as abroad. During his
44 years in the ministry, he served Lutheran parishes in both Ohio and North
Carolina. He also wrote numerous articles for Lutheran periodicals and two
books of sermons. Surviving are a son and daughter-in-law, Sanford C., ’64,
’67S, and Judy Weber Mitchell, ’64, a daughter, Kathryn Mitchell
Taylor, ’67, and three grandchildren, including Jeffrey C. Mitchell,
’93. His wife, Kathryn Rogers Mitchell, ’35, preceded him in death.
Gilbert N. Stultz, Chillicothe, OH, died April 29, 1999. A 68-year member
of Walnut Street United Methodist Church, he was a retired school teacher
of 44 years. He served as Ross County Commissioner from 1968 to 1976 and was
active in his community. He is survived by his wife, a daughter, a son, William
S. Stultz, ’72, four grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren. A brother,
Chester S. Stultz, ’35, predeceased him.
1935
June Myers Foutz, Gahanna, OH, died Dec. 25, 1997. A member of CW sorority
at Wittenberg, she was a retired legal secretary. She was also an active member
of St. Mark’s Lutheran Church and her community. Survivors include a
daughter, Julie Foutz Clemmons, ’72, a son and three grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by three cousins, Marjorie Myers Huff, ’37,
Donald H. Myers, ’32 and his wife, Catherine Bowman Myers, ’32,
and Edward C. Myers, ’38.
1936
Dorotha Urick Buroker, Christiansburg, OH, died Dec. 12, 1999. Until her retirement
in 1968, she taught at the Elizabeth, Christiansburg-Jackson and Bethel (OH)
schools for 30 years. She was a member of United Methodist Church and Olivet
Chapter 538 Ohio Eastern Star of Christiansburg. Surviving are a son, two
daughters, 11 grandchildren, 14 great-grandchildren, three great-great-grandchildren,
a sister, three step-great-grandchildren and two step-great-great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by a brother, Robert F. Urick, ’30.
Wilbur B. Sando, Laura, OH, died Jan. 14, 1999. An educator for 43 years,
he most recently was dean of Bethel College, Mishawaka, IN, until his retirement
in 1969. He was the director of Union Township FISH and was active in missionary
and friends’ churches. Two daughters, nine grandchildren and 16 great-grandchildren
survive.
1938
Leonard C. Koch, Lima, OH, died April 20, 1998. A member of St. Luke’s
Evangelical Lutheran Church, he was an electrical engineer for the Ohio Power
Co. for 40 years until his retirement. He is survived by his wife, a daughter,
Ann Koch Williams, ’81, and two grandchildren.
David R. Phelps, Atlanta, GA, died March 20, 1998. Survivors include two
daughters and a son.
1939
Elmer E. Bosserman, Madison, VA, died Feb. 28, 1998. He served as a chaplain
in the U.S. Navy. His wife, Margaret Kuck Bosserman, ’40, five children
and nine grandchildren survive. Preceding him in death were his father, David
E. Bosserman, ’10, and a sister, Helen Bosserman Hartman, ’48.
1941
Mary Goddard Berkshire, Springfield, OH, died Dec. 4, 1999. During her years
at Wittenberg, she was a member of GPB sorority. She was a member of Christ
Episcopal Church and a past member of the Young Woman’s Mission and
the Altar Guild of Christ Episcopal Church. Surviving are a son, a daughter,
Jennie Berkshire Lebold, ’62, and son-in-law, John R. Lebold, ’59,
four grandchildren, two great-grandchildren and two sisters, including Dorothy
Goddard Nelson, ’40. Her husband, Robert E. Berkshire, ’43, predeceased
her.
Sarah Snyder Schnepf, Clearwater, FL, died Sept. 11, 1997. At Wittenberg,
she was a member of GPB sorority. She taught art for North Adams Schools,
Decatur, IN. Survivors include her husband, two daughters, a son, 10 grandchildren,
two great-grandchildren and two brothers and sisters-in-law, Edgar E. Jr.,
’39, and Dorothy Bergquist Snyder, ’40, and William S., ’45,
and Joan Golz Snyder, ’45.
1942
Daniel F. Prugh, Columbus, OH, died Sept. 25, 1999. During World War II, he
served with the U.S. Army in the Third Armored Corps and the 40th Infantry
Division. For 50 years, he directed the affairs of the Franklin County (OH)
Historical Society and was instrumental in the establishment of the community’s
Center of Science & Industry. Survivors include his wife, a son and a
sister.
1948
Martha R. Graves, Washington Court House, OH, died Aug. 28, 1999. She served
in the Nursing Service Administration with the U.S. Army Nurse Corps during
World War II. She also taught in professional and practical nursing schools
and most recently served as a nurse consultant for Nursing Home and Home Health
Service Programs. An active member of First Presbyterian Church and her community,
she was named Business and Professional Women’s Woman of the Year for
1980. A niece and two great-nephews survive.
1949
Jean Stevens Hoffman, Ft. Thomas, KY, died April 4, 1998. A member of CW sorority
at Wittenberg, she had been a bookkeeper for The Stevens Company. Surviving
are her husband, a son, her parents and a brother.
Paul F. Stager, ’50, Springfield, OH, died Oct. 31, 1999. A World War
II U.S. Army veteran, he was retired from his position of senior quality control
engineer with Kelsey-Hayes Co. An active member of Trinity Lutheran Church
and his community, he is survived by three daughters, a son, 12 grandchildren,
four step-grandchildren, two great-grandchildren, three sisters and a brother.
His parents, Coy L. Stager, ’16, ’19S and Vera Steinman Stager,
’18 preceded him in death.
1950
Royden L. Johnson, Lebanon, OH, died Nov. 14, 1999. A U.S. Army veteran serving
in World War II, he was president of the Johnson Insurance Agency for several
years until his retirement in 1982. He was also a 40-year member of Central
United Methodist Church. Two daughters, a son, three grandchildren, two sisters
and two brothers survive.
Marilyn McCoy Mellott, Springfield, OH, died Oct. 8, 1999. At Wittenberg,
she was a member of CW sorority. She taught kindergarten in the Northeastern
Local School District and was a member of Northridge United Methodist Church.
Surviving are two sons, two grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Clifford W. Mellott, ’51,
and a sister, Patricia McCoy Brucker, ’52.
James H. Shay, Springfield, OH, died Oct. 22, 1999. He was in the U.S. Navy
serving aboard the USS Currituck during the Battle of the Philippines in World
War II. He retired in 1982 from Navistar with more than 30 years of service.
A member of St. Joseph Church and Knights of Columbus #624, he is survived
by his wife, a sister, a brother, two grandchildren and several nieces and
nephews.
Lois Gravenkemper Zanish, Springfield, OH, died Oct. 15, 1999. She was a
member of DZ sorority at Wittenberg. She taught for more than 40 years, most
of which were spent serving Emerson Elementary School. A lifetime member of
Central United Methodist Church, she was active in numerous volunteer and
professional organizations. Survivors include a daughter, a brother, a niece,
two nephews, an aunt and several cousins.
1951
Harold L. Sager, Springfield, OH, died Sept. 6, 1999. He was in the U.S. Army
from 1949 to 1955 and then in the Army Reserves until he retired as a major
in 1963. For 32 years, he served in many capacities with the IBM Corp. across
the country. After his retirement in 1987, he obtained his real estate license
and worked for Williams and Associates until his death. An active member of
the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints and his community, he was
also an accomplished pilot. Survivors include his wife, a son, a daughter
and two grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his father, J. Lee Sager,
’31, and an aunt, May Sager Myers, ’31.
A. Richard Scoon died Oct. 27, 1997 in Sarasota, FL. At Wittenberg, he was
a member of FGD fraternity. He served in the U.S. Navy from 1953 to 1955.
For more than 25 years, he worked as an industrial purchasing agent for various
companies in the Cleveland (OH) area. At the time of his death, he was a middle
school teacher and a maintenance supervisor. His wife, two children and a
brother, Robert Scoon, Jr., ’49, survive. Preceding him in death were
his mother, Isabel Brenan Scoon, ’25, a sister, Laura L. Scoon, ’54,
and an uncle, Bayard R. Brenan, Jr., ’27.
1952
Arthur E. Nielsen, Mundelein, IL, died July 21, 1999. He was employed at Kemper
Insurance for 40 years, attaining CPCU designation. An active member of St.
Andrew’s Lutheran Church, the Commonwealth Edison Seniors, and the Logan
Square Drum and Bugle Corps, he was an assistant scout master with the Boy
Scouts. Surviving are his wife, three sons, a daughter, 10 grandchildren,
two brothers and two sisters.
Carl E. Thomas, ’55S, ’68H, Grosse Point Woods, MI, died Nov.
1, 1999. A member of PKA fraternity at Wittenberg, he worked with Lutheran
Social Services of Michigan for 25 years, most recently serving as chief executive
officer. He also held numerous leadership positions with many organizations
in the Lutheran social service field. Survivors include his wife, Patricia
Moore Thomas, ’54, two daughters, including Deborah Thomas Sloss, ’83,
two step-brothers, Harvey S. Peters, ’56 and his wife, Ruth Weng Peters,
’55, and Edmond C. Peters, ’59, and a niece, Gretchen Peters LaChance,
’90.
1956
George G. Steensen, ’61S, New Concord, OH, died Nov. 11, 1997. A retired
Lutheran pastor, he received awards from the city of Cincinnati, OH, for recognition
of his work. A member of St. John’s Lutheran Church, Zanesville, OH,
he is survived by a daughter, Ka Steensen-Robbie, ’78, and a grandson.

Lois C. Kastens, Macomb, MI, died Sept. 26, 1999. She was a member of AXD
sorority at Wittenberg. Until her retirement, she taught physical education
and social studies with the Lakeview Public Schools, St. Clair Shores, MI.
There are no known survivors.
1959
Connie Bothel Butcher, Cincinnati, OH, died Aug. 24, 1999. She was a marketing
representative with Security Amirkhanian. Surviving are her husband, a daughter,
two sons, two step-children, three grandsons and three step-grandchildren.
1961
Wilma R. Parr, Millersport, OH, died June 29, 1998. She was retired from her
position as department chair of behavioral sciences and humanities at Columbus
(OH) Technical Institute. Several cousins, nieces and nephews survive.
1962
Patricia Spangenberger Beatty, Fargo, ND, died Dec. 20, 1998. She was a professor
emeritus of psychology at North Dakota State University. In 1994, she received
the North Dakota Psychology Association Lifetime Achievement Award. An active
member of numerous community and state organizations, she is survived by her
mother and a sister.
1965
Mary Jackson Vetter, Ballwin, MO, died July 26, 1997. At Wittenberg, she was
a member of DZ sorority. A former employee of the Kirkwood Public Library,
she is survived by a daughter, a son, and her mother.
1966
Margaret Schultz Vogt, Littleton, CO, died Oct. 19,1999. She taught art at
Heritage High School. Her husband, a son and two daughters survive.
1967
Frances Crowell Davis, Green Camp, OH, died March 11, 1999. Before her retirement,
she worked 31 years in education, as both a teacher and a principal. An active
member of United Methodist Church and several Marion County (OH) organizations,
she is survived by a niece, Patricia Crowell Ross, ’80, a brother and
a sister.
Cecil E. King, ’68S, Arcadia, FL, died Sept. 15, 1999. A U.S. Navy
veteran, he served in both the Pacific Campaign in World War II and in the
Korean Conflict. Until his retirement in 1988, he was pastor of churches in
Jeromesville and Hicksville, OH for 20 years. He was a member of St. Paul
Lutheran Church, the Oliver H. Perry 341 F&AM Masonic Lodge and Rotary
International. Surviving are his wife, three daughters, including Mary A.
King, ’85, three sons, including James M. King, ’75, 13 grandchildren
and seven great-grandchildren.
John A. Loxterman, ’69S, Painesville, OH, died Sept. 29, 1999. He served
with the U.S. Army in Europe during World War II. A pastor emeritus of Zion
Lutheran Church, Millersburg, OH and Faith Lutheran Church, Fairport Harbor,
OH, he co-founded Lockie Lee Dairy and Ohio Convenient Food Marts. His wife,
a daughter, two sons, Richard M. Loxterman, ’72, and Kirk F. Loxterman,
’72, 10 grandchildren, including Holly E. Loxterman, ’81, 13 great-grandchildren,
two brothers and three sisters survive.
1977
Mary E. Maddux, Springfield, OH, died Oct. 17, 1999. Until her retirement
in 1981, she was a teacher in the Springfield School System for 24 years.
A member of St. Joseph Catholic Church, she is survived by a sister and several
nieces and nephews, including Carolyn Bennett Jordan, ’88, and Peggy
Donahue Jordan, ’87.
1980
Earnestine B. Rease, Fort Lauderdale, FL, died Aug. 14, 1998. She taught at
Sunland Park Elementary School and was an active member of New Bethel Primitive
Baptist Church. Survivors include her mother, four brothers, three sisters,
a grandmother and several aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews and cousins.
