Discipline. Leadership. Teamwork. Sportsmanship. These are just a few of the concepts Wittenberg student-athletes learn throughout the course of their athletic careers and take with them long after they leave the field.

“These concepts are part of the fabric of athletics,” said Garnett Purnell, director of athletics.

“They are what major companies are looking for in young people today, people who will be the future leaders of the corporate world. It’s also what the Armed Services has seen in athletes for years.”

For many student-athletes, learning these concepts begins at a young age. “By engaging in athletics, especially at an early age, students obtain a significant number of skills that they carry throughout their adult life.

These skills then help them stand out in a positive way and develop as a person of good character,” Purnell said.

He also noted that the longer student-athletes remain involved in athletics, the more they acquire other skills, such as a good work ethic, leadership, creativity, initiative, communication skills and problem-solving skills.

“The ability to lead and work as a team, to discipline oneself and stay organized, to be creative and to remain loyal, to have a solid work ethic, these are all competencies employers want, and it’s what Wittenberg athletics teach,” Purnell explained.
