Louise G. Moser, Asheville, NC, died Dec. 13, 1999. A first lieutenant in the U.S. Army Nurses Corps during World War II, she held a variety of nursing positions around the country. In 1972, she retired as dean of nursing at Mesa State College, Grand Junction, CO. An active member of St. John’s Lutheran Church and her community, she is survived by a niece, a nephew and several grandnieces and grandnephews.

Helen Hahn Shannon, Moundsville, WV, died Nov. 19, 1998. A member of Kappa Delta sorority while at Wittenberg, she taught high school English with the Marshall County (WV) Schools and the Arlington (VA) Schools for 32 years. Survivors include a sister and two nephews.
Erma Leonard Zerkle, Lexington, KY, died Feb. 3, 2000. At Wittenberg, she was a member of Delta Zeta sorority. From 1958 to 1974, she was a lecturer and instructor at the University of Kentucky. A member of Second Presbyterian Church, she was an active volunteer in her community. A son, a daughter, seven grandchildren, 12 great-grandchildren and a sister, Louise Leonard, ’28, survive. Her husband, Zaner Zerkle, ’32, predeceased her.

Emily Dean Garbry, Piqua, OH, died Dec. 20, 1999. She was a member of Chi Omega sorority at Wittenberg. She taught at Piqua (OH) Central High School for 19 years. An active member of Grace United Methodist Church and her community, she was instrumental in establishing resources in Miami County for brain-injured children, which led to the origination of Riverside School. Survivors include a son and a nephew, Charles E. Setterfield, ’87. Preceding her in death were a sister, Anabella Dean Setterfield, ’32, and a brother-in-law, Hugh E. Setterfield, ’23.

Hugh L. Gilmore, formerly of Lancaster, OH, died Dec. 18, 1999, in Columbus, OH. During his years at Wittenberg, he was a member of Phi Kappa Psi fraternity. He co-founded Gilmore Brothers Inc., a power line construction company, in 1947. A member of First Presbyterian Church, he is survived by his wife, Janet McKenzie Gilmore, ’37, two sons, two daughters, four grandchildren, three great-grandchildren, two brothers, and several nieces and nephews. A brother, Edgar J. Gilmore, ’36, preceded him in death.
Pauline E. Metzger, Wapakoneta, OH, died Nov. 5, 1999. A member of Delta Zeta sorority at Wittenberg, she was a retired professor of home economics at the University of Dayton (OH). She also taught at Wittenberg, Blume High School, Wapakoneta, OH, and South High School, Lima, OH. She was a member of Lutheran Church of Our Savior and several professional and civic organizations. Surviving are a brother, two sisters, several cousins, including James E. Updegraff, ’65, Ruth Updegraff Smith, ’68, Frances Jacobs Updegraff, ’41, her husband, J. Alfred Updegraff, ’36, and a nephew, Stephen G. Schneider, ’76, and his wife, Regina Brady Schneider, ’77. She was preceded in death by three cousins, Frederick L. Jacobs, ’38, Leonard Koch, ’38, and Paul W. Jacobs, ’36.
Max E. Powers, Jamestown, OH, died Dec. 29, 1999. At Wittenberg, he was a member of Delta Sigma Phi fraternity. For 62 years, he was associated with Powers Funeral Home. He was a charter member and past president of the Jamestown Lions Club and a member of the Jamestown United Methodist Church. Survivors include three sons, 11 grandchildren and one great-grandchild.
Angela Peters Roberts, Dublin, OH, died Jan. 20, 2000. She was a member of Kappa Delta sorority at Wittenberg. She was a school teacher with the Springfield (OH) City Schools for 30 years and was one of the first teachers with the Head Start Program. She also worked at Roberts Model and Hobby Shop. A son, James R. Roberts, ’86, a brother, two grandchildren, two great-grandchildren, and several nieces and nephews survive. Preceding her in death was her husband, Elmer W. Roberts, ’37.

Mary Stutz Carlson, Dayton, OH, died Aug. 14, 1998. She was retired as a management analyst with the federal government. A member of Faith Lutheran Church and several civic organizations, she is survived by a son, four grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.
James Edward Dinkel, ’42S, Petersburg, MI, died Feb. 11, 1998. A Lutheran pastor for 42 years, he served congregations in Michigan, Ohio and Kentucky. After his retirement in 1984, he served as interim or vice pastor in 20 churches in northwest Ohio and southeastern Michigan. He also served as a pre-retirement facilitator for the Dana Corp., Blade Newspaper and St. Luke’s Hospital. Surviving are his wife, a son, two daughters, including Janet Dinkel Pearce, ’65, a son-in-law, James E. Pearce, ’58, five step-children, nine grandchildren, two brothers, Fred B. Dinkel, ’40, and Joseph W. Dinkel, ’43, and nieces, Barbara Dinkel Pollock, ’73, and Joan C. Crnkovich, ’83. His first wife, Betty Richardson Dinkel, ’39, and two cousins, Charles E. Miller, ’40, and Alta Miller Scharf, ’21, and her husband, Edward P. Scharf, ’10, preceded him in death.
Martha Moses Fredericks, New Carlisle, OH, died Jan. 23, 2000. She is survived by a daughter, a son, eight grandchildren, four great-grandchildren, and several nieces and nephews.
Harry M. Roller Jr., Mobile, AL, died Jan. 22, 2000. A member of Beta Theta Pi fraternity at Wittenberg, he served in Italy with the U.S. Army during World War II. He retired from International Paper Co. in 1980, after 39 years of service. A member of numerous civic and professional organizations, he is survived by a sister, a nephew, David W. Chilson, ’69, and five nieces.

Frank R. Miller, Wheeling, WV, died Sept. 4, 1998. During World War II, he served with the U.S. Air Force Band in India, Burma and China. An active member of Edgewood Lutheran Church, the Ohio Valley Lutheran Laymen, and the Wheeling (WV) Symphony Orchestra, he was self-employed as a landscaper and a musician. Survivors include three sisters, Ruth Miller Smith, ’56, Marian Miller Brown, ’49, and Flora Miller Heine, ’43, and her husband, Raymond A. Heine, ’43, three nephews, Wilbert S. Miller, ’73, Toby M. Chester J. Waltrip, Springfield, OH, died Feb. 1, 2000. He served with the U.S. Navy during World War II. He was an athletic trainer for the Columbus Red Birds, The Ohio State University, Columbus, OH, and the University of Chicago (IL). A member of East High Street Church of Christ and the National Athletic Trainer Association, he retired from the Chicago (IL) Club in 1990. His wife, a daughter, two grandsons, a sister, three brothers, and several nieces and nephews survive.

A. Joseph Upton, Round Hill, VA, died Oct. 21, 1999. He was a member of Phi Kappa Psi fraternity at Wittenberg. During World War II, he served in the Fourth Battalion Rangers in the North Africa, Sicily and Italy campaigns. After being wounded in Italy, he received two Bronze Battle Stars, the Purple Heart and the Distinguished Unit Badge. He retired as a vice president of marketing with Huck Manufacturing Co. and as a vice president of marketing/military and government sales with Monogram Aerospace in 1992. Survivors include his wife, two sons and a brother, Kenneth H. Upton, ’50.

Martin H. Bender, Dayton, OH, died Dec. 29, 1999. At Wittenberg, he was a member of Phi Mu Delta fraternity. He served with the U.S. Air Force during World War II in Italy. After 30 years of service, he retired from Elder-Beerman, and was also a former FBI agent with more than nine years of service. A life-long Lutheran, he is survived by his wife, three sons, including Martin H. Bender, ’74, two daughters, eight grandchildren, five great-grandchildren and a brother.

Jack R. Gardner, Savannah, GA, died Nov. 12, 1999. During World War II, he served with the U.S. Air Force. He served as pastor to Lutheran churches in New Chester and Montgomery, PA. His wife, two nephews and four nieces survive.
James E. Snyder, Springfield, OH, died Feb. 13, 2000. A U.S. Army veteran of World War II, he was a member of First Lutheran Church. He owned and operated several businesses, including Jim Snyder Shell Station, Jim Snyder Camping Store, Family Camping Store of Columbus, Jim Snyder & Daughter Magnetic Signs and Birdies Motel & Restaurant. He was currently employed in the advertising department of the Madison Press. Surviving are his wife, Dorothy Sugg Snyder, ’71, a daughter, two grandchildren, two sisters, including Helen Snyder Endter, ’51, a brother-in-law, Charles A. Endter, ’47, ’52S, a brother, Joseph J. Snyder, ’59, and numerous nieces and nephews, including Jennifer Endter Morgan, ’76, and Joanna Endter Wada, ’76.

Joseph J. Callison, Pensacola, FL, died Feb. 8, 2000. In 1970, he retired from International Harvester. An active member of many civic and charitable organizations, he was a past president of Local 402. Surviving are his wife, a son and two grandsons, including Kevin A. Callison, ’01.

She was employed as a commercial representative with Western Reserve Telephone Co., Hudson, OH. Survivors include two sons, a daughter, six grandchildren and a sister.
Norma Akerberg Pates, Bellevue, WA, died Oct. 25, 1999. At Wittenberg, she was a member of Alpha Xi Delta sorority. A homemaker, she was a 41-year member of St. Andrew’s Lutheran Church, where she was active in the church choir and Dorcas Circle. Her husband, a son, two daughters and three grandchildren survive.
Henry Perymon, Springfield, OH, died Jan. 14, 2000. He was employed by Wright Patterson Air Force Base and Robbins and Myers. A member of Mount Carmel Baptist Church, he is survived by a sister, a brother and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.

Hilbert H. Beloff, West Middlesex, PA, died Oct. 17, 1999. For 20 years, he was director of pharmacy at Sharon (PA) Regional Hospital. After retiring from this position, he worked as a pharmacist with Rite Aid until 1998. His wife, two children and four grandchildren survive.

Robert N. Baird, Cleveland Heights, OH, died Oct. 25, 1999. He was an associate professor of economics at Case Western Reserve University’s Weatherhead School of Management, Cleveland, OH, and for many years served as university marshal during commencement exercises. He co-wrote a textbook, Elementary Mathematical Economics, which was translated into Japanese and Portuguese. An accomplished banjo player, he is survived by two daughters, two step-children, two grandchildren, and a brother and sister-in-law, William M., ’57, and Jean Matsumoto Baird, ’57.
Dorothy Collins Zerkle, Urbana, OH, died Jan. 15, 2000. She was a retired teacher, having served the Springfield City (OH) Schools for 35 years. She was a member of River of Life Christian Center. Her daughter, three grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren survive.
