Story on campus support of gays and lesbians requested
Whenever the latest
Wittenberg Magazine arrives, I
always turn to the back to read
about the news from my classmates
and professors.
I do enjoy
hearing about the current
events on campus as well as
memories of past classes. Keep
up the good work!
There’s one aspect of the
Wittenberg community that’s
never mentioned anywhere or
discussed openly.
Not now and
not 20 years ago when I was on
campus. What does Wittenberg
do for gay and lesbian students
on campus? Being a young adult
and trying to come to grips with one’s sexuality can be a terrifying
experience.
I know — I experienced
it while attending
Witt in the early 1980s. There
was no support structure in
place. I actually went to Antioch
College to seek out other gay
students.
Now I share my life
openly with a wonderful man
with full acceptance from our
families and friends.
However, over the years,
I’ve discovered that I was not the
only gay student in my class and
that I had several gay professors
as well.
But I needed the support
and encouragement to bemyself back then — not later.
The one time I went for counseling
at the Student Center, I
was told, ‘If you don’t like it here,
leave.’” Perhaps you can devote
a future article to this timely topic in a future issue?
