Board member remembered for service to community and Wittenberg
James S. Wilkerson ’42, an emeritus member
of the Wittenberg Board of Directors, died
Aug. 9. He was 81.
A member of the board from 1969-1988,
Wilkerson majored in business administration
at Wittenberg.
He then joined Kelsey-Hayes
Company’s Steel Products Engineering Division
as a clerk in its production department, advancing
later to assistant plant manager, sales manager
and general manager.
In 1964, Kelsey-Hayes appointed him vicepresident
and a member of the company’s board
of directors.
Two years later, Wilkerson became vice president
in charge of the Aerospace Group followed by president, chief
executive officer, and chairman and chief executive officer.
A member of Alpha Tau Omega fraternity, Wilkerson received
the prestigious Class of 1914 Award from
the Alumni Association for outstanding service
to the university in 1986.
Wittenberg also honored
him with an Alumni Citation Award. In
addition, he was the first recipient of the Silver
Knight Award presented by the American Management
Association.
Active in his community throughout his
life, Wilkerson served in a number of capacities,
including as president of the Springfield
Chamber of Commerce and director of Junior
Achievement in Springfield.
He also served on
numerous boards.
His is survived by his wife of 58 years, Jeanne Fross
Wilkerson ’42, a daughter and son-in-law, three sons and two
daughters-in-law, and two grandchildren.
