Robert O. Moore ’37
died Feb. 22, 2001. He was 85.
A professor of Spanish
and French, Moore joined the
Wittenberg faculty in 1953 as
an associate professor and was
later promoted to full professor
in 1960. He also served as
chair of the Department of
Languages.
A scholar whose knowledge
and expertise was sought
by many, Moore was a member
of the Modern Language
Association, the American Association
of Teachers of French
and the American Association
of Teachers in German.
He
also served as a language consultant
to the National Association
of Standard Medical
Vocabulary.
Prior to teaching at his
alma mater, Moore, who
earned his M.A. in French history
and literature from the
University of Bordeaux,
France, and his Ph.D. in
French and Spanish from
Johns Hopkins, taught Italian
and French at Wilson College,
Chambersburg, Penn., and
later headed the Departmentof Romance Languages at
Thiel College, Greenville,
Penn.
His career was interrupted
by World War II
when he headed the French
Division in the Intelligence
Department of the Office of
Strategic Services.
In this position, Moore
directed liaison communications
between the United
States government and the
Free French.
He also handled
enemy message traffic between
Vichy and the Colonies.
Called a faithful friend
and an excellent linguistics
scholar, Moore taught at
Wittenberg for 25 years.
