Remembering the Sept. 11th attack, I have appreciated reading what other Wittenberg alumni have shared about the events of Sept 11, 2001. I live and work in Alexandria, Va., about five miles south of the Pentagon.
I am the Executive Director of the American Red Cross in Alexandria, and the attack on the Pentagon brought us into immediate response. As that day progressed into the long hours of the night when all was silent and the smell of the smoke permeated the air, I thought of another shocking event that marked my personal history.
I remember standing in the library at Wittenberg when we learned that President Kennedy had been shot in Dallas. And I remember most vividly gathering in the chapel that evening and singing “Oh God, Our Help in Ages Past.” We sang that song again this year at a community Thanksgiving service. Our God continues to be “our hope for years to come.”
