’24 Marian George Ferguson, Cedarville, OH, died Sept. 27, 2001. She taught school in Jamestown, OH. A member of Kappa Delta sorority, Cedar Cliff D.A.R. and the Cedarville United Presbyterian Church, she is survived by two nieces.
’25 Darline Massie Detrick, Springfield, OH, died July 26, 2001. Until her retirement in 1963, she taught elementary school with the Clark County school system for 25 years. She was a member of First Christian Church and several civic and professional organizations. Survivors include a daughter, three grandchildren, six great-grandchildren, a sister and several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her husband, Elno L. Detrick ’26, and a brother-in-law and sister, L. Gladden ’02 and Irene Massie Ronemus ’26.
’26 Alice McCartney Borst, South Vienna, OH, died Sept. 10, 2001. A member of First United Church of Christ, she is survived by two daughters, Margaret Borst Braumiller ’49 and Carolyn Borst Agle ’59, three sons, including Richard W. Borst ’52, 14 grandchildren, including Mary E. Borst ’96, 24 great-grandchildren, and numerous nieces and nephews. Preceding her in death were her husband, R. Marvin Borst ’28, brother-in-law and sister, Howard A. ’25 and Norma McCartney Kubic ’31, and sister-in-law, Helen Borst Warner ’27.
’29 Martha Culp Brumm, Springfield, OH, died July 12, 2001. A member of Alpha Delta Pi sorority, High Street United Methodist Church and several civic and professional organizations, she was a substitute teacher with the Springfield City Schools. Surviving are a daughter, a son, Walter A. Brumm ’60, four grandchildren, three great-grandchildren, and numerous nieces and nephews. Her mother, Irene Zutavern Culp 1898, a sister, Louise C. Culp ’26, and a cousin, Eunice Dolbeer Martin ’25 predeceased her.
M. Byron Morton, Lebanon, OH, died Aug. 5, 2001. His career in the field of education spanned 61 years as a teacher, coach, principal and superintendent with the Butler Township Schools, superintendent with the Montgomery County school system, assistant state superintendent for the state of Ohio and associate professor at the University of Dayton (OH) Graduate School of Education. He was a member of Phi Mu Delta fraternity, Vandalia United Methodist Church and 32nd Degree Masons. Survivors include a daughter, a son, five grandchildren, two foster granddaughters and 10 great-grandchildren, including Jessica A. Shellhause ’04, two sisters and two brothers.
Kathryn Balliet Witter, Mansfield, OH, died June 14, 2000. She was a member of Kappa Delta sorority and Grace Episcopal Church, where she was active in the choir and organ guild. A piano and voice teacher, she sang at St. Thomas Episcopal Church and Radio City Music Hall, both in New York, NY. Survivors include two nieces, a sister-in-law, one great-niece and three great-nephews.
’31 Elizabeth Ervin Ehrle, Springfield, OH, died Sept. 19, 2001. She taught at various Springfield schools for 30 years. An active, lifetime member of Central United Methodist Church, she is survived by a daughter, a son, three grandsons, a great-grandson, several step-grandchildren and step-great-grandchildren, and a step-great-great-grandson.
’32 Charles F. Balmer Sr., Urbana, OH, died Sept. 21, 2001. After 48 years of service, he retired as a physician in 1984. Surviving are three daughters, including Barbara Balmer Siferd ’88, a son, 13 grandchildren, 18 great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild.
’34 Ruth O’Neal Wysong, Cincinnati, OH, died Sept. 23, 2001. In 1982, she retired as social services coordinator with Mercy Medical Center, Springfield, OH. She is survived by two sons, two grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. Preceding her in death were a brother, Paul A. O’Neal ’34, and a niece, Jean O’Neal Thomas ’61.
’35 Thomas W. Dickerson, Ann Arbor, MI, died June 26, 2001. A member of Phi Gamma Delta fraternity and St. Luke’s Lutheran Church, he served in the U.S. Navy aboard an LST, #494, during World War II. He worked in automobile retailing for 25 years in the metro-Detroit area. In 1982, he retired from the Associates Discount Corp. His wife, two sons, a daughter, six grandchildren and three great-grandchildren survive.
Christine Chakeres Levathes, Washington D.C., died June 20, 2001. A member of Gamma Phi Beta sorority, she began her career in New York, NY as an advertising copywriter and promotion and publicity specialist with ad agencies and department stores. She was a creative director with Kenyon & Eckhardt Advertising, an editor of the Fashion Group Bulletin, a trade publication, and the author of two books, Your Future in the Beauty Business and Your Future in the Fashion World. Surviving are her husband, a son, a daughter and several cousins, including Michael H. Chakeres ’35 and his wife, Pauline Dombalis Chakeres ’99H, Valerie Chakeres Baker ’78 and Philip H. Chakeres ’90. She was preceded in death by a cousin, Mary Chakeres Collins ’38.
Elwood G. Pitzer, Springfield, OH, died Aug. 22, 2001. He was a member of Phi Gamma Delta fraternity and served as a lieutenant commander in the U.S. Navy during World War II. A basketball player in the National Basketball Conference, forerunner to the National Basketball Association, he later taught and coached with the Springfield Public school system. He was inducted into the Wittenberg University Hall of Honor, the South High School Hall of Fame and the North High School Hall of Honor. A member of First Evangelical Lutheran Church and the Ohio High School Coaches Association, he is survived by his wife, Betty Braun Pitzer ’33, two sons, a grandson, and several nieces and nephews.
James N. Tehan, Springfield, OH, died Aug. 11, 2001. A member of St. Raphael Catholic Church and Phi Gamma Delta fraternity, he was employed by the U.S. Postal Service for 40 years. A son, three sisters, Georgianna Tehan Fischer ’31, Martha Tehan Patterson ’38 and Mary Tehan Klenke ’49, and numerous nieces and nephews, including Edward J. Klenke Jr. ’73, survive. Preceding him in death was a sister, Catherine E. Tehan ’31.
’36 Mabel J. Aull, Landis, NC, died May 3, 2000. She was an X-ray technician at hospitals in Springfield, OH, and Meadville and Greenville, PA. Survivors include a sister, Rowena Aull Hansen ’38, a brother and a niece. Two sisters, Margaret Aull Lesemann ’33 and Eileen Aull Covington ’33, predeceased her.

’37 Elinor “Pete” Fisher Thompson, Bolivar, OH, died June 25, 2001. A retired high school teacher, she was a member of Delta Zeta sorority and St. Paul Lutheran Church. Survivors include a son, Mark A. Thompson ’76, a granddaughter, two sisters, and several nieces and nephews.
David S. Witwer ’42S, Mentor, OH, died Aug. 22, 2001. A member of Phi Mu Delta fraternity, he was a retired minister and founding pastor of Reformation Lutheran Church, Eastlake, OH. He was a past president of the Baltimore (OH) Rotary and of the Western Conference Synod of Ohio. An accomplished designer, homebuilder, woodworker and cabinetmaker, he is survived by his wife, Bettie Myers Witwer ’41, a son and daughter-in-law, Timothy S. ’67 and Susan Barber Witwer ’64, two daughters, Carol Witwer Fynn ’71 and Melanie Witwer Floro ’78, and seven grandchildren.
’38 Jane Roland Orvis, Columbus, OH, died Aug. 23, 2001. She was a member of Chi Omega sorority. She taught with the Columbus Public Schools at Barrett Junior High School for 19 years and served as church organist and choir director at Holy Trinity Lutheran Church, Upper Arlington, OH, for 35 years. Surviving are two sons, including Thomas V. Orvis ’67, a daughter, three grandchildren and numerous cousins, including William S. ’45 and Joan Golz Snyder ’45 and Edgar E. Jr. ’39 and Dorothy Bergquist Snyder ’40. A cousin, Sarah Snyder Schnepf ’41, preceded her in death.
Robert C. Shaw, Parma Heights, OH, died July 7, 2001. He owned and operated Robert C. Shaw Inc., an interior design firm. An active sculptor and photographer, he taught interior design at Cuyahoga Community College. A daughter and sister survive.
’39 Jack E. Coneby, Springfield, OH, died Sept. 10, 2001. He served in the U.S. Navy during World War II. A member of Risen Christ Lutheran Church and the Eagles, he was a retired engineer with the Elano Corporation. Survivors include two sons, a daughter and numerous grandchildren, great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren.
’40 John D. Roth, Laona, WI, died July 19, 2001. A U.S. Army chaplain from 1944 to 1971, he received several medals, including the Bronze Star. Surviving are his wife, Margaret Fleischer Roth ’43, two daughters, three grandchildren, a sister, and several nieces, nephews and cousins, including Joy Roth Weymouth ’67 and Richard P. Roth ’63. His father, Carl C. Roth ’10, preceded him in death.
’41 Beatrice Suhrbier Myers, Maumee, OH, died March 16, 2001. A member of Alpha Xi Delta sorority and Holy Trinity Lutheran Church, she was an active member of her community. Survivors include a daughter and a son. Her husband, Raymond H. Myers ’30, predeceased her.
’42 Herbert R. Powell, Zanesville, OH, died July 17, 2001. A veteran of the U.S. Army and Marine Corps, he was a member of Pi Kappa Alpha fraternity, Trinity Lutheran Church and Central Ohio Orchid Society. Until his retirement in 1989, he taught with the Zanesville City school system for 36 years. His wife, two sons, three brothers, three sisters, a half brother, a half sister, and several nieces and nephews survive.M. Ruth Hunt Wells, Johnstown, OH, died Feb. 2, 2001. She was a homemaker and member of First Baptist Church, Sunbury, OH. Surviving are her husband, two daughters, a son, four grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.
’43 Barbara Edwards MacIvor, Marysville, OH, died Aug. 15, 2001. She taught surgical nursing at The Ohio State University and St. Luke’s Hospital, Cleveland, OH. A member of First Presbyterian Church, she was a past president of The Woman’s Parliament. She leaves her husband, two sons, including John M. MacIvor ’73, a daughter, seven grandchildren, a sister, Phyllis M. Edwards ’41, a brother, and numerous nieces and nephews.

A member of Phi Kappa Psi fraternity, he was a retired pastor, having served the Lutheran Church of the Cross, Riverside, CA, for many years. ’46 Nicholas J. Preketes, Lambertville, MI, died May 30, 2001. He was a member of Phi Mu Delta fraternity. A former supervisor of Bedford Township, he owned and operated NICO Specialties for more than 25 years. An active member of his community and St. Paul’s Lutheran Church, he is survived by his wife, a son, three daughters, six grandchildren and a sister.
’47 Mary Hoppes Ballentine, Springfield, OH, died July 15, 2001. A member of Alpha Xi Delta, she taught first and second grades at Emerson, Snowhill and Grayhill Schools. She was an active member of the community and First Lutheran Church. Her daughter, two grandsons and four nieces and nephews, including Andrea L. Funk ’97, survive. Preceding her in death were her husband, James W. Ballentine ’48, her father, Edwin F. Hoppes ’11, her father-in-law, Every M. Ballentine ’42, and a sister-in-law, Ann Ballentine Funk ’41.
Jack A. Plank, Creston, OH, died Jan. 26, 2001. A member of Phi Kappa Psi fraternity, he was a retired salesman with Fishbaugh Construction Co., Greenwich, OH. Survivors include his wife, three sons, two daughters and 10 grandchildren.
’48 Donaldine Fraley Vergeldt, Dearborn Heights, MI, died Oct. 10, 2000. She taught vocal music with the Detroit (MI) Public Schools for several years. A registered porcelain china painting teacher, she was a member of the Dearborn China Painting Club and the International China Painters Organization. Her husband, two sons, two daughters and nine grandchildren survive.
’49 Robert E. Barnhart, Indianapolis, IN, died July 31, 2001. He was a member of Phi Gamma Delta fraternity and served in the U.S. Army Air Corps during World War II. Until his retirement as an industrial engineering manager in 1988, he was with Union Carbide Corp. for 34 years. A member of Chapel Hill United Methodist Church and the American Institute of Industrial Engineers, he received the Melvin Jones Fellow Award from the Lions Club International in 1999. Surviving are his wife, a son, a daughter and two granddaughters.
’50 Walter E. Moll, Chesterland, OH, died July 9, 2001. A member of Phi Gamma Delta fraternity, he served in the U.S. Navy during World War II. He taught at Canterbury Elementary and Roosevelt Junior High Schools, both in Cleveland Heights, OH, and later became an administrator with the West Geauga (OH) Schools before retiring in 1982. A member of the board of directors with the Cleveland Heights Y.M.C.A., director of the girls’ summer softball league and a volunteer at the Cleveland Museum of Natural History, he is survived by his wife, Patricia Wehn Moll ’49, two sons, a daughter, Lucinda Moll Schroeder ’75, five grandchildren, a sister and a brother-in-law, W. Carl Wehn ’55. A sister-in-law, Beverly Wehn Loomis ’54, predeceased him.
Matthew L. Winters ’54S, Mechanicsburg, PA, died Sept. 17, 2001. He was a member of Phi Mu Delta fraternity and a U.S. Army veteran of World War II. A retired pastor, he most recently served as senior pastor at Holy Trinity Lutheran Church, Buffalo, NY, for 17 years. He was also national chaplain of the U.S. Constabulary Association starting in 1998. His wife, Elizabeth Wiegand Winters ’54, a daughter, Deborah A. Winters ’77, a son, three grandchildren, and several nieces and nephews, including Margaret Pillote Koch ’76 and her husband, Gunther G. Koch ’76, survive.
’51 William H. Waln, Springfield, OH, died July 7, 2001. During World War II, he served as a gunnery officer with the U.S. Navy. He taught geometry at Schaefer Junior High School and then math and business at Springfield High School. He later served as principal of both Schaefer and Clark Junior High Schools. After his retirement, he co-owned the Popcorn Place. In 1985, he was elected to the Springfield City Commission and worked with TAC Industries. Surviving are his wife, a son, a daughter and three grandchildren, including Elizabeth K. Miyahima ’02.
’53 William D. Lingrell, Urbana, OH, died Sept. 25, 2001. From 1946 to 1949, he served in the U.S. Navy. Before his retirement in 1997, he served the Urbana Police Department for 45 years, becoming police chief in 1970. He was past president of the Urbana chapter of the American Heart Association and a member of the Ohio Association of Chiefs of Police and CLEE. Surviving are his wife, three daughters, two sons, 11 grandchildren, two sisters and a brother.
Benjamin Frederick Smith, San Antonio, TX, died June 11, 2001. He served in the U.S. Air Force for 30 years, reaching the rank of lieutenant colonel. During World War II, he was a B-17 pilot. He was director of flight operations in Thailand during the Korean War. An active member of his church, he was an honorary life member of the Fourth Degree, Knights of Columbus. Survivors include his wife, six children and seven grandchildren.
’54 David D. Lowum, Elmhurst, IL, died March 4, 2001. He was a member of Beta Theta Pi fraternity and had served with the U.S. Army. A retired president of Danly Die Set, a machine tool manufacturer, he established manufacturing plants in England and Belgium and expanded manufacturing facilities in the United States. His wife, a son and a brother, Clifford F. Lowum ’55, survive.
Don P. Steele, Springfield, OH, died July 29, 2001. A U.S. Army veteran of the Korean Conflict, he was a pharmacist for several companies, retiring in 1994 from RiteAid. He was an active member of St. Teresa Catholic Church and a Life Master for the past 35 years. Surviving are his wife, a daughter, two sons, a grandson, and several nieces and nephews.
’60 Juanita Blackstone Kemp, Springfield, OH, died Sept. 24, 2001. She taught with the State of Mississippi schools, at Grace Tatum Nursery, Springfield, OH, and with the Xenia City school system. She was also employed by Wright Patterson Air Force Base. A member of the National Council of Negro Women, she is survived by three sons, 14 grandchildren, five great-grandchildren, four cousins and an aunt.
’62 Harold R. Buttrum Jr., Martinsburg, WV, died April 9, 2001. He was retired as an engineer with the federal government. Survivors include his wife and a daughter.
Anne M. Phillipp, Kettering, OH, died Aug. 5, 2001. A retired teacher, she served the Northmont City Schools for 33 years. Her mother and two nieces survive.
Sharon Habig Sahr, Woodland Park, CO, died April 12, 2001. She was a member of Alpha Xi Delta sorority. She taught middle and high school with the Harrison School District, Fort Carson Schools, St. Mary’s Schools and other schools in Ohio. She leaves her husband, two daughters, three grandchildren and her mother. Her father, Ernest E. Habig ’31, and a cousin, Elizabeth Ripple McMains ’33, predeceased her.
’63 Allegra Gregg Cadaoas, Waialua, HI, died Feb. 24, 2001. A member of Alpha Xi Delta sorority, she was retired as a teacher. Active in many community, city and state affairs, she also participated in environmental and humanitarian causes. Surviving are her husband, two daughters, two sons and a sister, R. Ellen Gregg Stolarik ’54. Her father, Elmer J. Gregg ’30, ’34S, and mother, Louise Lind Gregg ’34, preceded her in death.
’64 Stephen Hamma Luttrell, Marietta, OH, died July 20, 2001. A member of Beta Theta Pi fraternity, he served in the U.S. Army National Guard. He was in the family businesses, including Luttrell’s Super Valu, Yellow Springs, OH, Creekside Antiques, Xenia, OH, Custom Lamp and Shade Shop, Oakwood, OH, and Luttrell’s of Lancaster (OH). He is survived by his wife, a son, his mother, three brothers, two sisters, including Susan L. Luttrell ’67, and several nieces, nephews and cousins, including Nicholas Galliger ’64. Preceding him in death were his aunt, Olive H. Huston ’28, and a cousin, Joseph H. Galliger ’58.
Carl Henry Rueter Jr., Bay Village, OH, died June 4, 2001. A veteran of the Vietnam War, he was retired as a captain with the U.S. Air Force. His wife, a brother, three step-children and two step-grandchildren survive.
’67 William G. Goerke, Florence, KY, died July 17, 2001. He was a member of Phi Mu Delta fraternity and Florence Baptist Church. A U.S. Army veteran of the Vietnam War, he was an accountant with Rippe and Kingston, Cincinnati, OH. Surviving are his mother and a sister.
Cecelia M. Johnson, Ormond Beach, FL, died July 4, 2001. She practiced surgery and emergency medicine in New York, NY and Daytona Beach and Titusville, FL. Vice president of the Florida Bahamas Synod of the E.L.C.A., she is survived by a son and her mother.
Alice Ayer Jordan, Springfield, OH, died Sept. 24, 2001. In 1980, she was honored for her 20 years of service to the Community Hospital, where she was a nursing instructor and director of the School of Nursing. Past president of the Tikamthi chapter of the American Business Women’s Association and a charter member and past president of the local Women’s Auxiliary of The Salvation Army, she leaves a brother, two sisters, and several nieces and nephews, including Roger L. Ludlow ’54.
’68 Robert Jordan Potter, San Antonio, TX, died July 7, 2001. He was a member of Phi Mu Delta fraternity. A former Toledo, OH attorney and businessman, he was a regional director with the Coverall Corp. in San Antonio and served on the board of directors of Travis Park United Methodist Church. He leaves his wife, a daughter and a brother.

’78 Roberta Robins Anderson, Springfield, OH, died May 27, 2001. She was a procurement technician at Wright Patterson Air Force Base for 17 years, having worked prior to that in the Athletic Department at Wittenberg. A member of St. Bernard Catholic Church, she is survived by two daughters, including Kathleen Anderson Hunt ’85, three sons, eight grandchildren, two sisters, three brothers, and several nieces and nephews.
’93 Clair E. Strommen ’93H, Roseville, MN, died July 20, 2001. From 1980 to 1994, he was president, CEO and chairman of Lutheran Brotherhood, Minneapolis, MN. A member of Augsburg College’s Athletic Hall of Fame and numerous professional organizations, he served as council president of Roseville Lutheran Church. Survivors include his wife, a daughter, a son and eight grandchildren.
