’23 Thelma Welker Ingle, Enon, OH, died Nov. 8, 2001. She taught at Enon Elementary School for more than 30 years. A member of Enon United Methodist Church and several civic organizations, she is survived by a son, Joseph W. Ingle ’59, four grandchildren and five greatgrandchildren. A son, John W. Ingle Jr. ’49, preceded her in death.
Alice Parker Jones, Springfield, OH, died Jan. 5, 2002. A member of Christadelphian Church, she taught at Snyder Park Elementary for 19 years before retiring in 1972. Surviving are four nieces, several cousins, including Linda Larson Daniel ’85 and Jane Schaediger Larson ’61, and several greatnieces. She was preceded in death by a sister, Dorothy Parker Pietzner ’19, and three cousins, Margaret Rhoderick Babb ’21, James R. Larson ’61 and Harriet Rhoderick Larson’31, and her husband, Walter W. Larson ’33.
’30 Zelpha I. Bowers, Troy, OH, died Oct. 10, 2001. She was a member of Chi Omega sorority and the Methodist Church. Before her retirement in 1973, she taught Spanish at Troy High School for 28 years. An avid traveler, she was a former member of the Wittenberg Alumni Council. A sister survives. Preceding her in death was her father, Frank C. Bowers ’17.
Melanchton P. “Pat” Paetznick ’33 S, Bucyrus, OH, died Sept. 16, 2001. A member of Lambda Chi Alpha fraternity, he was a U.S. Navy chaplain in the South Pacific during World War II. After 63 years of service as a Lutheran pastor, he gave his last sermon in Deunquat, OH, where he had served a small Lutheran congregation for 16 years since his retirement in 1981, after 32 years with St. Paul’s Evangelical Lutheran Church, Bucyrus, OH. An active member of his community, he is survived by a son, John W. Paetznick ’68. He was preceded in death by a son, Richard J. Paetznick ’63, and a brother, Paul A. Paetznick ’44.
’31 John W. McMahan, Columbus, OH, died Sept. 8, 2001. He served for more than 50 years with the United Methodist ministry in several parishes in Ohio. He chaired the Council on Finance and Administration for the West Ohio Conference of the United Methodist Church for eight years. Two sons, a daughter and four grandchildren survive.
’32 Kathleen Sprague Young, South Charleston, OH, died Dec. 16, 2001. She retired from Possum School where she had been named 1972 “Teacher of the Year.” She was a member of numerous professional and civic organizations and the Methodist Church. Surviving are a daughter, Karen Young Richards ’65, a sister-in-law, two great-grandsons and several nieces and nephews. A brother, Arthur H. Sprague ’27, and a brother-inlaw and sister, Edwin H. ’26 and Anna Sprague Lehr ’27, predeceased her.
’33 John R. Culler, Spokane, WA, died Jan. 9, 2001. He was a member of Phi Kappa Psi fraternity. In 1950, he established Culler, Gale, Martell and Ericson, an architecture firm from which he retired as principal architect in 1983. A member of Central Lutheran Church, he was a past president of numerous professional and community organizations. Survivors include four daughters, seven grandchildren, a sister-inlaw, Doris Fickling Culler ’39, several nieces and nephews, including Nancy J. Culler ’67, and numerous cousins, including Caroline Culler Gumz’40, G. Duane ’49 and Barbara Wolfe Culler ’49, Louise Culler McLaughlin ’62, Carol J. Culler, ’64, Robert C. ’66 and Carol Lang Culler’66, Robert L. ’74 and Jean Kott Culler ’75, Michael L.’74 and Martha Culler Dourson ’74, Ellen Culler Baggett ’76, Paul A. ’79 and Lois Haines Culler ’79, Susan Culler Conard ’81, and James N. Culler ’87. His parents, Aaron A. ’02, ’10MA and Edna Rutledge Culler 1899, a brother, Philip H. Culler ’39, and a sister, Jane Culler Rowe’39, preceded him in death.
Georgianna Cannon Ransbottom, Roseville, OH, died Sept. 7, 2001. She was a member of Chi Omega sorority. A second grade teacher at Roseville Elementary and the Franklin Local School Districts, she was a member of St. Paul’s Lutheran Church and the Eastern Star. Two daughters, including Lynn Ransbottom Stickrath ’76, a son, eight grandchildren, three great-grandchildren and a niece survive.
’34 Robert Cartmell, Springfield, OH, died Dec. 30, 2001. A member of Beta Theta Pi fraternity, he served as a combat engineer with the U.S. Army in the South Pacific during World War II. He retired from the Springfield News-Sun newspaper after 40 years reporting and editing. A member and president of the board of directors of Warder Public Library in the’60s and ’70s, he is survived by a son, a daughter, five grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. His wife, Betty Sperling Cartmell ’43, redeceased him.
Nancy Arbogast Faust, Hudson, MI, died Nov. 4, 2001. Before her retirement in 1977, she was employed by the Springfield (OH) City Schools for 35 years as an elementary teacher and principal of Jefferson and Simon Kenton Schools. She was a member of Christ Episcopal Church and numerous civic organizations. Surviving are a daughter and son-in-law, Joseph P. Bender ’62, a grandson, a granddaughter, a great-granddaughter and two cousins. Florence Wetzel Helman, Dayton, OH, died Oct. 11, 2001. She was a teacher at Francis Monroe. Survivors include her husband, three daughters, 10 grandchildren and nine greatgrandchildren.
’35 Roberta Secrest Cantrill, El Paso, TX, died Sept. 27, 2001. Upon her retirement in 1975 from the El Paso Public Schools, she was commended by the Board of Education and the El Paso Teachers Association for her outstanding service. An active member of First Trinity United Methodist Church, she served as a lay minister and president of the Wesley Fellowship Class. She leaves two sisters, and several nieces and nephews. Her mother, Alberta Heaume Secrest ’02, preceded her in death.
Isabell Evans Smith, formerly of Springfield, OH, died Oct. 28, 2001, in Ft. Bragg, NC. She taught at Enon Elementary School for 16 years and later with the Springfield City Schools for 13 years. A member of Covenant Presbyterian Church and the Eastern Star, she is survived by two daughters, four grandchildren, including Katherine O’Neill Armfelt ’89, and a sister.
’38 Barbara Warner Wainscott, Neenah, WI, died Sept. 2, 2001. She was a member of Gamma Phi Beta sorority and St. Margaret Mary Catholic Church. She leaves a daughter, two sons, seven grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren. Preceding her in death was her husband, Howard L. Wainscott ’38.
’39 Webb C. Jennings, Westlake, OH, died Oct. 25, 2001. A member of Phi Kappa Psi fraternity, he served in counter intelligence in the South Pacific during World War II. A former general manager of Dairyman’s Milk Co., he founded and served as president of Sun Industries and Sun State Plastics. He served as a director and vice president of the National Dairy Council and president of the Ohio Dairy Boosters Association. Surviving are two daughters, a son, 12 grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.
’40 Harold C. Griest ’62M.Ed., formerly of North Hampton, OH, died Nov. 25, 2001 in Tallahassee, FL. A school teacher and principal, he most recently served Northwestern Elementary until retiring in 1973. He continued to farm until 1995. Active in a variety of professional organizations, he leaves a daughter, a brother and two granddaughters.
Mary Willey Miller, Pontiac, MI, died Oct. 10, 2001. She was a registered nurse in the office of Dr. C. G. Burke for 31 years. A member of First Presbyterian Church, she is survived by three step-children, 10 step-grandchildren and a sister.
’41 Rose Failor Eberhard, Scottsdale, AZ, died June 7, 2001. She was a member of Alpha Delta Pi sorority. A high school music teacher, she was an accomplished vocalist, performing concerts throughout the United States. Her husband, four sons and nine grandchildren survive.
John F. Kostyo ’87 H, Columbus, OH, died Nov. 23, 2001. He was a member of Phi Gamma Delta fraternity. During World War II, he served in the U.S. Army in France and in the Selective Service Unit in the Reserves. He was retired as executive secretary with the State of Ohio. An active member of Northwest United Methodist Church and his community, he was enshrined in Wittenberg’s Hall of Honor in 1987. He is survived by a sister, seven nieces and five nephews. His brother and sister-in-law, Albert R. and Mary Welsh Kostyo ’49, predeceased him.
’44 Richard E. Brady, Nashville, TN, died Nov. 14, 2001. A member of Alpha Tau Omega, he was a decorated naval veteran of World War II. He was founder and president of the Brady Family Historical Association and The Pioneer Heritage Center. He is survived by his wife, a daughter, two sons, two step-children and two grandchildren. Preceding him in death was an aunt, Lois Meek Dudley ’23. Veva Cobley Hillesheim, El Cajon, CA, died Oct. 16, 2001. A member of Alpha Delta Pi sorority and the Catholic Church, she was a school teacher and a volunteer with United Cerebral Palsy and the Museum of Man. Her husband, a son and two daughters survive.
Geneura J. Lanning, Wapakoneta, OH, died Nov. 12, 2001. She taught vocational home economics with the Wapakoneta City Schools for 28 years. An active member of First English Lutheran Church and her community, she leaves three sisters, including Verna Lanning Elliott ’54.
’47 Ward W. Carhart, Omaha, NE, died Sept. 13, 2001. He served in the corps of engineers with the U.S. Army during World War II. An elementary school teacher, he served in school administration for dependents of Air Force personnel in Spain, Germany, England and Newfoundland. He leaves his wife, three children and six grandchildren.
Fred H. Feldmann, Greenwood, SC, died Dec. 8, 2001. A member of the Main Street United Methodist Church, he was retired as a supervisor with Ohio Edison Company, Springfield, OH. Surviving are his wife, a son, a daughter, two stepdaughters, 10 grandchildren, 14 great-grandchildren and four great-great-grandchildren.
Ina Grace Hunt, London, OH, died Dec. 12, 2001. She taught school mostly in the Springfield,OH area. An active member of First Presbyterian Church and her community, she is survived by two cousins, including Janet Newhart Ary ’80.
Robert C. Leemhuis, Erie, PA, died Sept. 7, 2001. A veteran of World War II, he was a music teacher with the Erie Schools for more than 35 years. He was a violist with the Erie Philharmonic Orchestra and repaired string instruments. His wife, Marjorie Koons Leemhuis ’45, four sons, nine grandchildren, a sister, Carolyn Leemhuis Lingenfelter ’52, and numerous cousins, including F. William Hirt ’47, Susan Hirt Hagen’57, Stephen D. Hirt ’67, Sarah E. Hagen ’88 and Andrew C. Hirt ’97 survive. He was preceded in death by a cousin, H. Orth Hirt ’11.
’49 Arthur Willard Hart, Springfield, OH, died Nov. 10, 2001. A U.S. Air Force veteran of World War II, he served as vice president of Security National Bank from 1955 to 1978. He was an active member of Central United Methodist Church and his community. Survivors include two sons, three grandchildren, two great-grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews, including H. Edward Hart’58.
’50 Marie Johnson Lutz, Cuyahoga Falls, OH, died Jan. 25, 2001. She was a member of Alpha Delta Pi sorority. A retired elementary music teacher from the Woodridge School District, she founded a choral group, the Chansonettes, which performed for 30 years throughout northeastern Ohio. An active member of her church and community, she is survived by her husband, Robert W. Lutz ’50, and two daughters, including Linda M. Lutz ’81.
Hildreth L. Miller, Casstown, OH, died Oct. 22, 2001. After 43 years of service, she retired as a teacher at Knoop Children’s Home, Lostcreek, Heywood and the Van Cleve schools. An active member of her community, she served for 13 years as national secretary of the Children’s International Summer Village. A member of the Miami East Hall of Fame, she leaves a brother, two sisters, Edythe Miller Stevens ’41 and Virginia Miller Manning ’48, and numerous nieces and nephews, including David F. Manning’73, and his wife, Janet Schaefer Manning ’73.
’52 Flora Hughey O’Briant, Springfield, OH, died Oct. 29, 2001. She retired as an elementary teacher with the Northwestern Local School District after 21 years of service. A member of Maiden Lane Church of God, she is survived by a daughter, a son, a sister, seven grandchildren, 11 great-grandchildren, and several nieces and nephews.
’53 Richard Malahy, Springfield, OH, died Oct. 14, 2001. Before retiring in 1993, he was selfemployed as a dentist in Fairborn, OH for more than 35 years. Surviving are two sisters and several cousins, including Helen Kohle Lehmenkuler ’51 and Mary Kohle Caldwell ’38. A brother, Paul T. Malahy ’39, and a brother-in-law, Charles M. Caldwell ’38, predeceased him.
Carl Ferdinand Reibs, Fort Wayne, IN, died Sept. 11, 2001. He was a Korean War Navy and Marine Corps veteran. In 1990, he retired from Shawnee Middle School as a teacher, having also taught at the former Franklin School for 25 years. A member of Trinity English Lutheran Church, he is survived by his wife, two sons, four grandchildren and two sisters.
’54 Lillian Cote Timmons, formerly of Springfield, OH, died Jan. 4, 2002 in Bradenton, FL She served in the U.S. Army Nurse Corps during World War II. She was a founding member of the Faith United Church of Christ and a member of Highlands United Church of Christ. Surviving are a son, a daughter and two granddaughters.
Harold “Doak” Eugene Walker, Springfield, OH, died Oct. 13, 2001. A member of Phi Gamma Delta fraternity, he was commissioned as a first lieutenant in the U.S. Marine Corps and served in the third marine division. He was retired as a district manager with the Moews Seed Co., Granville, IL. His wife, Carol Derr Walker ’57, two daughters, two sons, including Steven E. Walker ’82, two grandsons, two brothers, a brother-in-law, Arthur D. Derr’53, three aunts, an uncle, and several nieces and nephews survive. Preceding him in death was a sister-in-law, Barbara Spacht Derr ’75.
’57 Robert Norman Milner, Paso Robles, CA, died June 14, 1999. He was a member of Lambda Chi Alpha fraternity and served as a corporal in the U.S. Army during the Korean War, receiving a purple heart. He was a supervising engineer with the South Coast Air Quality Management District. Survivors include his wife, a son, a daughter, four grandchildren and a brother, Walter E. Milner ’50.
’60 Richard L. Pearson, Columbus, OH, died Dec. 13, 2001. Before retiring in 1996, he was a manager with Beneficial Financial Company of Columbus for 36 years. He was a charter member of Kiwanis Club, London, OH, member and past president of West Franklin County Kiwanis Club, and past Master Counselor of the Frank W. Kiefer Chapter of DeMolay. Surviving are his wife, Sue Xander Pearson ’60, and two sisters, including Janet Pearson Ervin ’64. His father, Donovan H. Pearson ’24, preceded him in death.
’62 Franklin D. Eckstein, Clearwater, FL, died Jan. 5, 2002. During the Vietnam War era, he served with the U.S. Army with the 513th Intelligence Corps in West Berlin. An attorney, he retired from AEGON Corp. as a vice president of advanced marketing. He leaves a son, a daughter, a grandchild and two brothers, including Everett E. Eckstein’66.

’66 Donna Louise Moehlich, Venice, FL, died Sept. 13, 1998. A member of Delta Zeta sorority, she was a quality assessment nurse and employee with Sarasota Memorial Hospital. She was a member of Lemon Bay Church of Christ and the Order of the Eastern Star of Venice. A brother, a niece and a nephew survive.
’68 Lois Witte Dolcemaschio, Sandusky, OH, died Jan. 26, 2001. She was a member of Sigma Kappa sorority. She taught first and third grades in Iowa and Indiana. A member of Calvary Temple, she was an employee with the Easter Seals Office and a volunteer at Care & Share. Surviving are her husband, a daughter, two sons, her parents, a sister, two brothers and two nieces.
Frances L. Kimble, Springfield, OH, died Dec. 8, 2001. Until her retirement in 1972, she taught school for 34 years, having served most recently at Possum School. She was a member of First United Church of Christ. Survivors include a sister, a niece and a nephew. Her uncle, Howard F. Kimble ’15, predeceased her.
’73 Vera Wenrick Phleger, London, OH, died Nov. 16, 2001. She taught with the Madison and Clark County Schools before retiring in 1978 from South Vienna Middle School. A member of First United Methodist Church and Phi Beta Psi sorority, she co-owned the former Western Auto Parts Store in London. A granddaughter, daughter-in-law and sisterin- law survive. She was preceded in death by a son, Robert C. Phleger ’60.
’74 Phyllis Rader Martin, Springfield, OH, died Dec. 26, 2001. An educator, she primarily taught third grade at Medway Elementary School. A member of Bethel Baptist Church, she is survived by her husband, a daughter, two sons, eight grandchildren, a brother and two sisters.
’77 Scotte Davis Maedeker, Mascoutah, IL, died May 8, 2001. She was a contract administrator with the Defense Electronic Supply Center, Dayton, OH, and later served as a contract negotiator with the aeronautical systems division at Wright Patterson Air Force Base. Survivors include her husband, a son, two daughters, her mother and a brother.
’81 Michael L. Bayles, Ramsey, NJ, died Oct. 18, 2001. A member of Delta Sigma Phi fraternity and the Lutheran Church of the Redeemer, he was a computer consultant with Indecon Corp. He was pursuing a master’s degree at New Jersey Institute of Technology. His wife, parents and two brothers survive.
