Hazel Davis Cook, Springfield, OH, died April 9, 2002. She was a member of St. John’s Lutheran Church. Survivors include two daughters, eight grandchildren, 17 great-grandchildren, 13 great-great-grandchildren, a sister, and numerous nieces and nephews.

Pauline L. Burnett, Springfield, OH, died May 3, 2002. She was a bookkeeper and assistant manager of the Springfield Country Club until her retirement in 1980. She was a member of Chi Omega sorority, Northminster Presbyterian Church and several civic groups. A cousin survives.

Rose Ashton Unkle, Pickerington, OH, died Oct. 30, 2001. She taught school at Liberty Union, Wilmington and Reynoldsburg, OH. She was past district deputy grand chief of Pythian Sisters Basil Temple 490, and a member of other professional and fraternal organizations. A cousin, and several nieces and nephews survive.

Ruth Allemeier Knapp, Delphos, OH, died April 26, 2002. She was a member of St. Peter Lutheran Church, taught in the Delphos City Schools and operated a private kindergarten for 21 years. Survivors include a son, a daughter, four grandchildren, two stepgrandchildren, eight great-grandchildren and a brother.

Julia Albrecht Apple, Akron, OH, died June 30, 2002. She was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church, Alpha Xi Delta sorority and the women’s board of Akron City Hospital. A homemaker and avid gardener, she is survived by a son, a daughter, two grandchildren, five stepgrandchildren and a sister. Her husband, Raymond W. Apple ’31, preceded her in death.

John W. Cory, Springfield, OH, died March 25, 2002. A member of Phi Kappa Psi fraternity and Covenant Presbyterian Church, he was an office manager and a realtor for more than 35 years with Carl E. Mumma Auctioneer and Realty. A lifelong Republican, he was honored in 2000 with an award by the State of Ohio for having voted in every primary and general election since his 21st birthday. There are no known survivors. His mother, Sarah Ward Cory ’03, preceded him in death.

Beulah Birkhold Friend, Rosewood, OH, died June 4, 2002. She formerly taught elementary school at Fletcher, Maplewood and Rosewood, and had assisted at the Rosewood Post Office. She owned and operated the Rosewood Grocery for a number of years. Survivors include her husband, Ralph W. Friend ’30, and several nieces and nephews.

Margaret Starkey Moyer, Harrisburg, PA, died Aug. 28, 2001. She was a member of Kappa Delta sorority, Paxton Presbyterian Church and several community organizations. A retired teacher from John Harris High School, she is survived by a son, two daughters, seven grandchildren, nine great-grandchildren and a niece, Anne Shutters Krick ’66. Her husband, Arthur L. Moyer ’32, and a sister-in-law, Mary Moyer Eby ’30, predeceased her.

William C. Comstock, Struthers, OH, died April 7, 2002. A business English and journalism instructor at Struthers High School for 36 years before retiring in 1969, he was a general agent with Midland Mutual and later, Lafayette Life. An active member of United Presbyterian Church, he served as an officer with several community organizations, was named “Man of the Year” by the local P.T.A. in 1975, was a 32nd degree Mason, and in 1995, received the “Outstanding Disabled Individual Award of Physical Rehabilitation.” He established a scholarship fund at Wittenberg and in 1971 received an Alumni Association Citation. Surviving are his wife, a daughter, two granddaughters, a great-granddaughter and a sister.

Carl A. Driscoll, Union City, GA, died May 15, 2002. A member of Delta Sigma Phi fraternity, he was a chaplain with the Civil Air Patrol from 1959 at Squadron, Group and Florida Wing levels, until his retirement as a lieutenant colonel in 1975. A Lutheran pastor, he served many congregations before becoming secretary of the Synod in 1967. Following his retirement in 1975, he was a visitation pastor, an interim synod secretary and president and interim executive secretary of the Florida Council of Churches. He is survived by his wife, a daughter, Norma Driscoll Smith ’57, a son, David A. Driscoll ’62, five grandchildren, 11 great-grandchildren, a brother, Eldon R. Driscoll ’44, and several nieces and nephews, including Joyce Wilson Agle ’53, James E. ’84 and Amanda Agle Kincaid ’84, Sandra L. Driscoll ’63, Jeannine Driscoll Eisland ’57 and Paul E. Driscoll ’66. Preceding him death were a brother, Edward D. Driscoll ’38, ’41S, and an uncle, C. Edward Derr 1894.

Arthur B. Holzworth, Grosse Ile, MI, died Jan. 3, 2002. He was a member of Beta Theta Pi fraternity and Trinity Lutheran Church. Before his retirement, he was an osteopathic physician with a private practice in Chicago, IL. He also taught classes in osteopathic manipulation therapy to medical students and interns at the Chicago Osteopathic Hospital. Surviving are three sons and five grandchildren.

Virginia Harris Miller, Longwood, FL, died April 27, 2002. A member of Alpha Delta Pi sorority, she was an elementary school teacher before her retirement. A son and two grandchildren survive.

Morrow F. Stough, Chula Vista, CA, died March 23, 2002. A member of Delta Sigma Phi fraternity, he served with the U.S. Marine Corps during World War II. He was an education professor, student teacher supervisor, principal at the laboratory school and acting dean at San Diego State University for more than 20 years before traveling to Nepal to become chief education adviser to the minister of education with the U.S. State Department. After his retirement, he became active as director of the National Teacher Corps in San Diego, CA. Survivors include his wife, Betty Sipes Stough ’37, two daughters, two sons, three grandchildren, three great-grandchildren and a sister, Ruth Stough Hessenflow ’37.

Betty Schmacker Weyland, Ft. Lauderdale, FL, died April 18, 2002. A personnel officer with the C.I.A., she retired in 1975. Painting and traveling were her hobbies. Survivors include her husband, two daughters, including Cynthia Weyland Rollins ’66, a son, four grandchildren and a sister, Fay L. Schmacker ’42. Preceding her in death was a sister, Jean Schmacker Sheley ’36.

Elton M. Hartzler, Camden, SC, died Dec. 30, 2001. During World War II, he served in the Army Corps of Engineers in North Africa and Sicily. He was a chief chemist with CP Chemicals. A member of the American Chemical Society and Grace Episcopal Church, he is survived by his wife, three sons, a daughter and two grandsons.

Ivan N. Barnhart, New Carlisle, OH, died March 27, 2002. A member of Pi Kappa Alpha fraternity and New Carlisle Church of the Brethren, he taught in Darke County and at the New Carlisle Sertoma. He also managed the Brubaker Grain & Feed, Tipp City, OH, for 31 years. He is survived by his wife, Frances Thackara Barnhart ’37, two daughters, four grandchildren and three great-grandchildren. A cousin, Willis J. Baughman ’36, predeceased him.

John R. Powers Sr., Cary, NC, died July 8, 1998. He was a member of Beta Theta Pi fraternity and served with the U.S. Army during World War II. An active member of the United Methodist Church, he was a retired director of marketing and sales with Valley Mould and Iron Co., Hubbard, OH. Surviving are two daughters, including Marsha Powers Ambrose ’38, a son and nine grandchildren.

Howard Arnholt Jr., Loudonville, OH, died March 12, 2002. A member of Phi Kappa Psi fraternity and Zion Lutheran Church, he owned Arnholt’s Clothing before his retirement. Survivors include his wife, Martha Teeter Arnholt ’41, two sons, a daughter, a brother-in-law, Chester LaBuda ’48, and a cousin, Robert C. Arnholt ’44. He was preceded in death by a brother, Elliott W. Arnholt ’40, a cousin, Carmita Hildinger Arnholt ’46, and two sisters-in-law, Lucille Teeter Conrad ’39 and Mary Teeter LaBuda ’50.

Carl Coad Jr., Palm Harbor, FL, died July 2, 2002. A member of Phi Mu Delta fraternity, he was a Lutheran minister in Ohio for nearly 40 years, most recently at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church, Warren, OH. He is survived by two sons, including Bruce E. Coad ’67, a granddaughter, and a sister, Betty Coad Murphy ’44. Preceding him in death were his wife, Esther Barthen Coad ’41, a sister-in-law, Mildred Barthen Hutchings ’38, and a brother-in-law and sister-in-law, Melvin E. ’35 and Jane Poesse Barthen ’36.

L. Ilene Johnson, Springfield, OH, died July 2, 2002. A retired school teacher, she taught for two years at Mingo School, five years at Cable and 37 years at Grayhill School. She was a member of Fifth Lutheran Church and several professional organizations. A niece, a great-niece and three great-nephews survive. A sister, Christine M. Johnson ’29, preceded her in death.

Mary Blum Bair, Millersburg, OH, died Oct. 11, 2000. A member of Alpha Xi Delta sorority, she had served as a Sunday School teacher, member of the choir, trustee and deacon of Millersburg Presbyterian Church. Surviving are a son, two daughters, 10 grandchildren and a sister. Preceding her in death was her husband, Richard C. Bair ’41.

Henry J. Nickerson, Pensacola, FL, died June 11, 2002. A member of Phi Gamma Delta fraternity, he retired from the U.S. Navy with the rank of commander. During World War II, he was stationed on the Hornet and was awarded the Navy Cross for his action in the Battle of Midway. He is survived by a son, a daughter, a sister, Mary Nickerson Wilcox ’41, a niece, Margaret Wilcox Welty ’71, and a nephew, Michael D. Wilcox ’70. Preceding him in death were two brothers-in-law, Thomas S. Rankin ’39 and Robert I. Wilcox ’39.

L. Grace Oatman, Newark, OH, died Oct. 13, 2000. An elementary teacher in the central Ohio area for 40 years, she is survived by a brother and two sisters.

Marvin S. Proctor, Hickory, NC, died March 21, 2002. He worked as a pressman with Crowell-Collier Publishing Co., Springfield, OH, before entering the ministry to serve as a pastor in Chicago, IL, Reedsburg, WI, Spokane, WA, Des Moines, IA, Lafayette IN, Madison, WI, and Springfield, OH. He was a minister of music in Springfield for 12 years. Following his retirement, he continued to serve as an interim pastor. He also had a radio career. His wife, two daughters, four grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren survive.

M. Edward Chatlain, Mansfield, OH, died Feb. 17, 2002. A member of Phi Gamma Delta fraternity, he served with the U.S. Navy in the Philippines during World War II. He was a teacher and coach at Savannah High School and Mansfield Senior High School. In 1955, he founded the Garden Center of Mansfield. He was inducted into Wittenberg’s Athletic Hall of Honor in 1994. Surviving are his wife, a son, two daughters, five grandchildren and a sister, Barbara Chatlain Scott ’45.

Richard E. Hunt, Stuart, FL, died April 1, 2002. He was a member of Lambda Chi Alpha fraternity. He served as Lt. J. G. in the U.S. Maritime Service during World War II in the North Atlantic, the Caribbean, the Pacific, the Philippines, Okinawa and the occupation of Japan. He formed WPTW-AM, a Miami County radio station, and the Miami County Foundation. His former wife survives.

Roy L. Sheil, North Canton, OH, died Feb. 28, 2002. He was a member of St. Michael’s Catholic Church and Alpha Tau Omega fraternity. He served as a marine during World War II and the Korean Conflict, achieving the rank of lieutenant colonel, and was awarded the Purple Heart, Air Medals and the Distinguished Flying Cross. A former teacher and head basketball coach at Canton Lehman and Toledo Waite High Schools, he also taught at Glenwood and Northwest High Schools. He was inducted into the Wittenberg Athletic Hall of Honor in 1994. Survivors include his wife, four sons, a stepson, seven grandchildren, a brother and a sister.

Jessie Hawken Fauth, Houston, TX, died Dec. 31, 2001. She was a member of Gamma Phi Beta sorority. A homemaker, she served as a Girl Scout and Boy Scout leader, and was actively involved in numerous clubs. Survivors include her husband, two sons, two daughters, five grandchildren, a sister, Gloria Hawken Bredenkamp ’46, a sister-in-law, Evelyn Tessmer Hawken Baker ’49, a nephew, Anthony R. Mendenhall ’73, two nieces and their husbands, Earl W. ’75, and Susan Mendenhall Osborne ’75, Brian S. ’78 and Linda Mendenhall Doyle ’78, a great-niece, Katherine S. Osborne 2003, and several cousins and their spouses, E. Robert Jr. ’51 and Marilyn Johnson Hawken ’51, John K. ’56 and Patricia Degenhard Hawken ’56, Sue Hawken Murphy ’76 and Sally Hawken Green ’83. Preceding her in death were her father, Harry C. Hawken ’14, a brother, Harry C. Hawken Jr. ’48, an uncle, Earle R. Hawken ’18, and an aunt, Esther Hawken Koehler ’19.

Marian Miller Rhodes, Omaha, NE, died April 16, 2001. Formerly of Fort Wayne, IN, and Cleveland, OH, she was a member of Gamma Phi Beta sorority and the Evangelical Lutheran Church. A daughter, a son and two grandchildren survive. Her husband, Ralph J. Rhodes ’44, and a brother, Robert H. Miller ’51, predeceased her.

Maxine Eulitt Iavarone, Westerville, OH, died April 15, 2002. She retired from the Veterans Administration Hospital. Two daughters, two sons, 10 grandchildren, three great-grandchildren and a brother survive.

Richard F. Bock, Toledo, OH, died Sept. 22, 2001. During World War II, he served with the U.S. Navy. He was a referee for the Child Study Institute and then director of housing with Lutheran Home Societies, retiring in 1997. Following his retirement, he worked as a consultant with the Lutheran Housing Services and the Lutheran Children’s Services. He was also a former director of the Lucas County Children’s Services Board. A member of several fraternal organizations, he is survived by his wife, a daughter, two sons, 11 grandchildren, a great-granddaughter, a brother and three sisters.

Marian Miller Brown, New Martinsville, WV, died May 13, 2002. A member of Edgwood Lutheran Church and Alpha Xi Delta sorority, she was the former office secretary at the Wheeling (WV) Realty Co. Survivors include two daughters, three stepdaughters, four grandchildren, two sisters, Ruth Miller Smith ’56 and Flora Miller Heine ’43, a brother-in-law, Raymond A. Heine ’43, several nieces and nephews, including Wilbert S. Miller ’73, Toby M. Woloshan 2001, Ward W. ’69 and Margaret Price Heine ’73, Marcella Miller Woloshan ’71, Hillary J. Heine 2003, Amy Pye Kochensparger ’97, Laura E. Pye ’97, and Lawrence D. ’72 and Marian Heine Pye ’73, and cousins, Lois Snyder Joviak ’45 and Eunice E. Snyder ’38. A brother, Frank R. Miller ’42, and a cousin, Carl L. Snyder ’42, preceded her in death.

Harriett Funk Hall, Springfield, OH, died May 18, 2002. She was an active member of Grace Evangelical Lutheran Church and her community. She is survived by a son, a sister, four nieces, four nephews and several cousins.

Harold R. “Cutsy” Minnich, Covington, OH, died May 29, 2002. A member of Lambda Chi Alpha fraternity and Covington Presbyterian Church, he served with the U.S. Army during World War II. He was retired from the Covington Building and Loan. Survivors include his wife, Dolores O’Donnell Minnich ’49, a daughter, three granddaughters, two great-grandchildren, two brothers, four sisters and a brother-in-law, James R. O’Donnell ’62. His father-in-law, Roger C. O’Donnell ’26, predeceased him.

Don A. Anders, Clearwater, FL, died May 3, 2002. During World War II, he served with the Air Corps and Infantry of the U.S. Army. A teacher with the Pinellas County Schools, he was a member of a support team to the Governor’s Commission on Education. His wife, a daughter, a son and three grandchildren survive.

Donald J. Gard, Englewood, CO, died July 8, 2002. He was the former regional marketing manager with First Georgia Insurance Group, Augusta, GA. A 50-year member of the Anthony Lodge, he is survived by his daughter, three grandchildren, two sisters, including Mary L. Gard ’46, two brothers, including Russell Gard ’50, and several nieces and nephews. His father, Charles A. Gard ’17, predeceased him.

Lois Hutzell Laupp, Wheeling, WV, died April 19, 2002. A member of Kappa Delta sorority, she was an active volunteer in her community and Christ United Methodist Church. Surviving are her husband, a son, three daughters, including Elizabeth Laupp Schwind ’89 and Ann Laupp Klamfoth ’78, a son-in-law, Kenneth D. Klamfoth ’77, eight grandchildren, including Michelle L. Gessler ’99 and a sister, Ann Hutzell Winters ’54.

Harold A. Weisman Jr., Tampa, FL, died April 29, 2002. A veteran of the U.S. Army during World War II, he was a member of Phi Kappa Psi fraternity and the Masonic Lodge. He was a salesman for Bendix Westinghouse before becoming manager of Air Brakes and Controls, Baltimore, MD. He also owned and managed Tampa (FL) Tent and Rental. Surviving are his wife, two sons, four grandchildren, a brother and a sister.
