Wittenberg joins community in commemorating first anniversary of Sept. 11

On Sept. 11, Wittenberg students, faculty and staff were among the 2,000 from Springfield and Clark County who gathered to commemorate the one-year anniversary of the terrorist attacks on America.

The largest event in Clark County for the first anniversary, it included a memorial walk from Veterans Park to Edwards-Maurer Field, where those in attendance listened to patriotic musical performances by nine area high school marching bands and an a cappella singing of the national anthem by the Wittenberg Choir. A color guard 21-gun salute and a fly-over of four F-16s also occurred.

Prior to the walk, members of the Wittenberg and Springfield communities dedicated a tree in Commencement Hollow, which was followed by a service in Weaver Chapel titled “A Time to Remember...A Time to Hope.” Later that evening, Student Senate organized a Candlelight Vigil in Myers Hollow. About 300 students gathered for the vigil to reflect about the tragic events and to honor those who died. headline
