Professor remembered for commitment to students and university

Arthur L. Lutz ’93H, professor emeritus of physics, died Aug. 22. He was 93.

Lutz joined the Wittenberg faculty in 1943 where he remained until his retirement in 1975. Throughout his 32-year career, Lutz served the university in a number of capacities, including as chair of the physics department for 25 years and on various committees, two of which were responsible for major structure and curriculum changes in 1956 and 1965.

In 1968, he received the Class of 1914 Award for his outstanding service to Wittenberg, and five years later, he was honored with the Alumni Association’s Award for Distinguished Teaching. A former holder of a National Science Foundation Fellowship, he was also the first to hold the E.O. Weaver Chair in Physics.

In 1993, Lutz and his wife Martha, a former Springfield schoolteacher, author and fellow Class of 1914 Award recipient, were again recognized by Wittenberg, this time with honorary alumni status.

Remembered by his students and colleagues for his patience, interest and classroom effectiveness, Lutz wanted to ensure that all students left Wittenberg with a clear understanding of the universe in order to call themselves college graduates.

Even in retirement, the Lutzs continued to enhance the educational experience for students. In 1995, they designated a $100,000 gift for the Science and Technological component of the $15.5 million Sesquicentennial Challenge fund-raising effort, which resulted in the Arthur and Martha Lutz Scanning Electron Microscopy Laboratory. At the dedication, Lutz, paraphrasing philosopher William James, said that the “great use of life is to spend it for something that outlasts it.”

Lutz is survived by his wife, a son, a daughter, two grandchildren and two brothers. In his memory, the family asks that “you use your time well, help someone who needs kindness, do the right thing even when it’s unpleasant, and never stop learning.” headline
