’31
W. Russell Jenkins, formerly of New Carlisle, OH, died Jan. 12, 2003 in
Springfield, OH. A lifetime member of North Hampton United Church of Christ,
he was a farmer and an honorary board member of Future Farmers. He was
also past president of North Hampton Lions Club. Survivors include his
wife, a daughter, three grandchildren, one great-grandson, and several
nieces and nephews, including G. David Jenkins ’65. Two brothers,
Warder B. Jenkins ’17 and Howard G. Jenkins ’17, preceded
him in death.
Helen Lewis Kalbfus, formerly of Springfield, OH, died Feb. 13, 2003
in Mt. Morris, IL. A member of Gamma Phi Beta sorority and High Street
United Methodist Church, she taught first grade at Enon Elementary School
until her retirement in 1977. A son, William R. Kalbfus ’67, a daughter,
Susan Kalbfus Wolfe ’61, four grandchildren and three great-grandchildren
survive. She was preceded in death by her husband, Robert P. Kalbfus ’31,
her mother-in-law, Jessie Weimer Kalbfus 1892, a sister-in-law and her
husband, Frances Kalbfus Shimp ’26 and W. Bennett Shimp ’26,
and two brothers-in-law, Fred W. Kalbfus ’28 and Charles W. Kalbfus
’15, and his wife Nellie Lyon Kalbfus ’15.
Margaret Fisher Moore, Wytheville, VA, died Oct. 7, 2002. She was a member
of Chi Omega sorority and Holy Trinity Lutheran Church. For nearly 40
years she taught at schools in Burkes Garden and Roanoke, VA, and Wilmington,
NC. There are no known survivors.

Carl F. Swartzbaugh, formerly of Springfield, OH, died Mar. 4, 2003 in
Middletown, OH . A member of St. Paul Evangelical Lutheran Church, he
owned Swartzbaugh Land Surveying. He was recognized with the Lifetime
Achievement Award by the Ohio Society of Professional Land Surveyors.
Survivors include a daughter, two sons, eight grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren.

Wallene R. Derby, Glendale, MO, died Sept. 10, 2001. He was a member of
Delta Sigma Phi fraternity. A chemist, he provided technical support for
the development and manufacturer of silicon wafers at the Monsanto Co.
Following retirement, he translated books into braille. Surviving are
two daughters, six grandchildren and six great-grandchildren. He was preceded
in death by his wife, Hildred Chester Derby ’34.
Horace G. Evans, Minier, IL, died Jan. 1, 2003. A member of Beta Theta
Pi fraternity and Minier Assembly of God, he was a former pastor at Towanda
Baptist Church. A farmer, he was also the owner of H.G. Evans & Sons
Trucking. Survivors include three sons, two daughters, two nieces, Barbara
A. Evans ’51 and Marilyn Evans Shearer ’54, two nephews, Thomas
J. Evans ’50 and his wife, Bernice Young Evans ’54, and James
E. Arnott ’62, a great-niece, Lauren Evans Ballard ’84, and
a great-nephew, Andrew S. Arnott ’90. He was preceded in death by
a sister, Caryl Evans Arnott ’27, and two brothers, William H. Evans
’20 and Russell F. Evans ’25, and his wife Audra Ballentine
Evans ’21.
Lucy Swingle Shoemaker, Upper Arlington, OH, died March 13, 2003. She
was a member of Kappa Delta sorority and Christ Lutheran Church. She taught
junior high and high school for 31 years in Perry County, OH, Arlington,
VA, and Columbus, OH. Surviving are a sister, Elizabeth Swingle Meyer
’32, a niece, Nancy Shai Azbell ’63, and two nephews, Peter
A. Swingle ’78 and his wife, Linda Williams Swingle ’76, and
John H. Baumberger ’73. She was preceded in death by two sisters,
Mary Swingle Shai ’30 and Ruth Swingle Baumberger ’38, and
two brothers, Solomon L. Swingle ’30 and H. Jacob Swingle ’36.

Emilie Woide Bullock, formerly of Cincinnati, OH, died Jan. 21, 2003 in
Columbus, OH. A member of Chi Omega sorority and Lutheran Church of Our
Savior in Cincinnati, OH, and the recipient of numerous teaching awards,
she taught for many years in the Cincinnati school system. She is survived
by three sons, including Joseph D. ’63, and his wife, Martha Foss
Bullock ’63 and Thomas W. Bullock ’72, and a sister-in-law,
Nancy Bauer Bullock ’32. She was preceded in death by her husband,
Joseph C. Bullock ’28, a brother, John D. Woide ’38, and two
brothers-in-law, F. Daniel Bullock ’36 and W. Marion Bullock ’31.
Roger C. Hill, South Charleston, OH, died March 17, 2003. A member of
United Methodist Church, he was a devoted farmer, involved with operations
and maintenance on his farm. He was also an electrical engineer at Bauer
Brothers in Springfield, OH. His wife, two sons, two daughters, three
granddaughters, four grandsons and a brother survive him.

Ruth Buckley Woodard, Albany, CA, died Aug 3, 2001. She was a homemaker,
a teacher with the Adams Township System and an assistant to the placement
director and supervisor of the Zimmerman Library at Wittenberg. Survivors
include her husband, a son and a daughter.

Ellen Fenner Lilie, Oberlin, OH, died Nov. 29, 2002. A member of Alpha
Delta Pi sorority and First Unitarian Church of Cleveland, she worked
with the Division of Adult Education in the Cleveland (OH) Public Schools,
teaching basic literacy, English as a second language, and citizenship
to students from the United States and 44 foreign countries before her
retirement in 1974. She also taught courses related to speech language
at the Cleveland College of Case Western Reserve University. A daughter,
a son, two step-daughters and two-step sons, 11 grandchildren and four
great-grandchildren survive her. She was preceded in death by her father,
Jesse A. Fenner 1894, and an aunt, Virginia Fenner 1900.
Arthur G. Portz, Rocky River, OH, died Dec. 9, 2002. A member of Phi
Gamma Delta fraternity, he served on the Army Ordnance Industry Integration
Commission during World War II. He was a metallurgist and materials engineer
with major companies, and most recently a consultant with Cleveland Pneumatic
Tool Co. He is survived by a son, a daughter, Holly Portz Koiro ’67,
five grandchildren and seven cousins, Henry G. Portz ’49 and his
wife, Judith Grube Portz ’50, Susan Oaklief Mandator ’65,
Matthew H. Portz ’46, Ann Strawn Stafford ’70, James R. Portz
’73 and his wife Barbara Wasson Strawn ’73, Scott G. Strawn
’76 and his wife, Carol Pfeifer Strawn ’75, and Alison Portz
Conrad ’81. He was preceded in death by his wife, Betty Hollinger
Portz ’40, his parents, Francis M. ’09 and Helen Greer Portz
’09, two uncles, Clarence A. Portz ’13 and his wife, Elizabeth
Motschman Portz ’18, and Harvey O. Portz ’13 and his wife
Hallie Wright Portz ’35, and four cousins, Lois Portz Strawn ’42,
Robert M. Portz
’43, Lorin H. Oaklief ’29, and R. Greer Portz ’49 and
his wife Nancy Alexander Portz ’49.
Charlotte Loeffler Reynolds, Piqua, OH, died Nov. 21, 2002. She was a
deacon at her church, Westminister Presbyterian Church, and a member of
Gamma Phi Beta sorority. Survivors include her husband, a son and two
grandchildren.

Beth Sigworth Meister, formerly of Columbus, OH, died Nov. 21, 2002 in
Sarasota, FL. A member of Chi Omega sorority and Faith Lutheran Church,
she was a homemaker. A son, a nephew, John A. Meister ’65 and his
wife, Barbara Fitch Meister ’64, a great-nephew, John A. Meister
II ’96, and a sister-in-law, Shirley Arnette Meister ’42 survive.
Her husband, Robert L. Meister ’36, a son, Warren L. Meister ’66,
her father-in-law, Herman L. Meister ’14, and a brother-in-law,
John H. Meister ’38, preceded her in death.
Ruth Knollenberg Pershing, Carrollton, GA, died Dec. 31, 2002. She was
a member of Chi Omega sorority and a former member of First English Lutheran
Church in Richmond, IN. She served as church secretary of St. Margaret’s
Episcopal Church. Survivors include a daughter, Patricia Pershing Newman
’63, a son, and a sister-in-law, Margaret Pershing Work ’41,
and her husband Joseph B. Work ’38. She was preceded in death by
her husband, John J. Pershing Sr. ’39, her father-in-law, Benjamin
J. Pershing ’12, and her mother-in-law, Vera Miller Pershing ’15.
Ralph T. Wells, Bangor, ME, died Dec. 7, 2002. During World War II, he
worked on bomb sites and tuned pianos and organs in the Springfield, OH
area. He is survived by his wife, three daughters, a son, three stepchildren,
10 grandchildren, three great-grandchildren and several step-grandchildren
and step-great-grandchildren. His first wife, Martha Critchfield Wells
’61, a brother, Alfred N. Wells ’34, and a great-aunt, Jean
Neal Cosley 1889, preceded him in death.

Edith Malloy Zimmerman, formerly of Sarasota, FL, died Jan. 14, 2003 in
Winter Haven, FL. During World War II, she served with the U.S. Army Medical
Service Corps, achieving the rank of first lieutenant. A physical therapist,
she retired from private practice in 1985. Two daughters and two granddaughters
survive her. She was preceded in death by her stepfather, Joseph E. Hicks
1897, and a stepsister, Kathryn Hicks Jones ’25.
Betty DeWeese Zimpher, Piqua, OH, died Dec. 28, 2001. She was a member
of Gamma Phi Beta sorority and St. Paul’s United Church of Christ,
where she had served on the church council. She served with the Piqua
City School District in several capacities for many years. Two sons and
seven grandchildren survive her. She was preceded in death by a sister,
Virginia DeWeese Hulme ’33.

Betsy Downey Barnes, Springfield, OH, died Feb. 3, 2003. A member of Gamma
Phi Beta sorority and Covenant Presbyterian Church, she was a homemaker
and served several volunteer agencies. She was also an officer and director
with The Yost Co. for more than 40 years. Surviving are a son, a daughter
and several grandchildren, step-grandchildren, great-grandchildren and
a step-great-granddaughter.
Frederick L. Lesser, Middletown, OH, died Oct. 14, 2002. A member of
Delta Sigma Phi fraternity and Breiel Boulevard First Church of God, he
was a veteran of World War II, serving in the U.S. Army Medical Corps.
He was employed as an estimator for the Packing Corp. of America for 26
years. He is survived by two daughters, a grandson and a sister. His wife,
Martha Linville Lesser, ’41, and a brother, Gerald J. Lesser ’51,
preceded him in death.

C. William Meager, Mission Viejo, CA, died Jan. 29, 2003. A member of
Beta Theta Pi fraternity, he spent 37 years with Goodyear Tire & Rubber
Company before retiring as director of salaried sales and personnel. Surviving
are his wife, a daughter, two sons, eight grandchildren and two great-grandsons.
Geraldine Miller Prescott, Newton Falls, OH, died July 12, 2002. A member
of Chi Omega sorority, she taught physical education for 33 years before
retiring in 1979 from the Newton Falls public schools. Survivors include
a sister, two brothers, including Charles J. Miller Jr. ’43, a nephew,
David H. Prescott ’77 and his wife, Nancy Fumich Prescott ’77,
and a cousin, William F. Miller ’42. She was preceded in death by
her husband, Arthur J. Prescott ’42, and a brother-in-law, David
W. Prescott ’41 and his wife, Jayne Hires Prescott ’43.
George W. Schuette, formerly of Easton, MD, died Dec. 17, 2002 in Lakeland,
FL. A member of Lambda Chi Alpha fraternity and Dorm League, he served
as a pastor at many churches in Indiana, most recently St. Mark’s
Lutheran Church in Auburn, IN, for 24 years before retiring in 1982. He
is survived by his wife, Martha Bush Schuette ’58, two daughters,
including Rebecca Schuette Folkemer ’68, and her husband, C. Thomas
Folkemer ’67, six grandchildren, a sister, a sister-in-law, Bonita
J. Bush ’63, and two brothers-in law, George A. Bush ’51
and Raymond L. Bush ’56.

Dorothy Daum Chollar, Galena, IL, formerly of Dayton, OH, died Nov. 22,
2001. A member of Gamma Phi Beta sorority, she was a property manager
with several different firms. Surviving are two daughters, two stepdaughters,
three grandchildren, two great-grandchildren and a niece.
Orville C. Hoover, Savannah, GA, died Nov. 4, 2002. He was a member of
Phi Gamma Delta fraternity and First Christian Church. During World War
II, he served with the U.S. Navy. He was awarded the Distinguished Flying
Cross and from the Philippines government, the Liberation Medal. He operated
Savannah Machine and Foundry, holding the position of president of the
American Foundry Society in 1982. He retired in 1986. Survivors include
two daughters, two sons, three grandchildren and two sisters.
John “Jack” A. Howell, Springfield, OH, died March 13. 2003.
A member of the Phi Mu Delta fraternity, he served with the U.S. Army
during World War II, receiving two Purple Hearts, the Silver Star and
two oak leaf clusters to the Bronze Star. He was vice president and president
of J&J Foundry Inc. retiring in 1978. He also received several commendations
for his service as a special deputy with the Clark County Sheriff’s
Office. His wife, two sons, five grandchildren and a great-grandchild
survive him. He was preceded in death by an aunt, Vera Howell Luckman
’35.
Ruth “Toots” Crites Kavanaugh, Springfield, OH, died March
22, 2003. A member of St. Teresa Catholic Church, she co-owned and operated
Kavanaugh’s Office Supply for 25 years. Surviving are her husband,
two daughters, a son and four grandchildren. She was preceded in death
by a brother, Thomas W. Crites ’42.
Martha Ferguson Stewart, Sidney, OH, died Nov. 25, 2002. A member of
Quincy United Methodist Church, she retired as a matron of Logan County
Children’s Home. She was also a proprietor of the Wheel Inn Restaurant.
Four daughters, 17 grandchildren, 17 great-grandchildren, three sisters
and a brother survive her.
