Fred and Dorothy Kiester Bigelow celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary on April 15, 2003. They met while swimming in the Wittenberg pool their junior year.

Paul Starkey was honored at this year’s Indiana University Pediatric Dentistry Alumni Biennial Conference in Indianapolis, Ind. Paul retired in 1983 and today resides in Coos Bay, Ore.

Janet Hart Heinicke’s artwork has been accepted at the Arte Sagrado exhibition at Concordia University as well as by the Lexington Art League in Lexington, Ky. During May and June, Janet traveled to Mwangaza Resource Center in Tanzania, East Africa, where she volunteered with the Evangelical Lutheran Church in Tanzania.
Edith Kellar Mahaney was honored with an art gallery in her name at The Munce Art Center in Zionsville, Ind., in May. Edith served as executive director of the P.H. Sullivan Foundation for a number of years, and under her leadership, the art center opened.

Thomas M. Nelson has recently retired from his job as a Principal System Engineer with Evans & Sutherland Computer Corporation. He and his wife, Mary, currently reside in Sandy, Utah.

Thomas J. Bannar has retired from a 36-year career in municipal government. His last record-setting position as City Manager of Haverford Township, Pa., lasted 29 years. Tom and his wife, Dorothy, now live in The Villages, Fla.
Thomas W. Lentz is now Chairman of Global Display Solutions Inc. He and his wife Martha Kantonen Lentz ’68 reside in Roundhead, Ohio.

Elmer E. Burrall married Anne Bowes, June 30, 2001. The couple now resides in Hot Springs Village, Ark.
Ronald R. Gilbert, an attorney, was recently listed in Who’s Who in Aquatics for 2002. He is the retired chairman of the National Aquatic Coalition, and now the chairman of the Foundation for Aquatic Inquiry Prevention (F.A.I.P). He is also listed in seven other Who’s Who publications, including Who’s Who in the World, Who’s Who in the Midwest, Who’s Who in America and Who’s Who in American Law.
Paul F. Hollenberg, the Maurice H. Seevers Collegiate Professor and Chair of Pharmacology at the University of Michigan, is serving as the president of the American Society of Pharmacology and Experimental Therapeutics (ASPET). Research efforts of the members of ASPET are concerned with developing new medicines and therapeutic agents to fight existing and emerging diseases.
Virginia A. Weaver Kaada celebrated the 15th anniversary of her ordination with St.Paul/St. Luke’s Lutheran Church in Port Richmond, N.Y.
John P. McDaniel, CEO of MedStar Health, was honored with the 2003 Civic Achievement Award from the Washington Chapter of the American Jewish Committee. The award is presented to business, civic and political leaders throughout the country who, through their outstanding leadership skills and dedication, have demonstrated their commitment to improving and strengthening their communities. John lives in Highland, Md.
Lanty L. Smith was elected to the board of trustees of The Duke Endowment, a private foundation established in 1924 to serve the people of the Carolinas. Smith is chairman of Soles Brower Smith & Company and chairman of Precision Fabrics Group Inc. He resides in Greensboro, N.C.
Ronald E. Wisner retired from his position as dean of students at the University of Colorado at Colorado Springs to accompany his wife, Jane Haven Wisner, to Denmark where she has accepted a teaching position at the Copenhagen International School for the 2003-04 school year.

Carl J. Berg Jr. is superintendent for the Central Ohio Joint Vocational School District in Plain City, Ohio. He resides in Dublin, Ohio.
Stephen D. Hirt entered his first 5K race this past May after having six coronary artery bypasses in October 2001. He finished the 3.1-mile race in 25:08.
James J. Lakso was recently nominated to Kish Bank’s board of directors. He is currently the provost and vice president for student development of Juniata College. He and his wife reside in Huntingdon, Pa.
Richard C. Schroeder, director of community development in Lima, Ohio, retired in February after 31 years of service. He and his wife continue to live in Lima.

John D. Bekeny is a special investigator with U.S. Investigations Services. He conducts background investigations on persons requiring security clearances in Washington, D.C., and in Boston, Mass.
Suellen Borgmann Craig was recently promoted to senior vice president for the executive office of the Planned Parenthood Federation of America.
Susan J. Sykes Moreno is the founder and president of Maap Services Inc., an international information center and network system for individuals with autism. She also serves as the editor of The Maap, which helps families of more advanced individuals within the autistic spectrum of disorders.
Rick Powell is the senior pastor of St. Paul’s Evangelical Lutheran Church on Courthouse Square in downtown Toledo, Ohio.

Terry H. Stevens is the assistant vice president for CNA. He and his wife Pamela Smith Stevens ’68 recently relocated to Naperville, Ill.
Jim Wade decided on early retirement and left the newsgathering division of BBC News in London after 25 years. He and his wife still reside in Oxford, England.

Barbara Beyster Bierbusse was promoted to vice president of private banking at Comerica Bank in April 2003. She resides in Grosse Pointe Farms, Mich.
Gregory L. Frost was elected to a seat on the U.S. District Court in Columbus, Ohio, in March. He had been a Licking County Ohio Common Pleas judge since 1990. President Bush nominated Frost for this position.
Jean Willis LeLoup received an award for excellence in teaching, research and service during SUNY-Cortland’s faculty and professional staff awards luncheon in May. She has been promoted to full professor of Spanish at SUNY-Cortland.
Proud grandparents of Nikolas, born in March, Thomas G. Mandon and Sally Orme Mandon met on the first day of their freshmen year at Wittenberg. Tom, the former president of the Indiana Association of School Business Officials, is the director of fiscal services at Greenwood Community School Corporation. The couple currently resides in Greenwood, Ind.
David A. Poling retired after 24 years at Los Alamos where he conducted nuclear weapons research and global climate modeling. A gunsmith, David now resides in North Texas, where he enjoys woodworking and his dogs.
Robin L. Teske is a professor of political science at James Madison University in Harrisonburg Va., where she teaches courses in international law and organizations, and peace studies. She recently co-edited Partial Truths and The Politics of Community, a book consisting of 18 essays that considers what happens after feminists succeed in achieving social change or in founding organizations dedicated to accomplishing their personal and social goals.
Gregory L. Weiss, professor of sociology at Roanoke College in Salem, Va., received the 2002-03 Dean’s Council Award for exemplary professional achievement in his efforts to advance knowledge in medical sociology. The award also recognized Weiss’ contributions to the scholarship of teaching and learning; his involvement of students in research; his numerous contributions and dedication to the profession of sociology, and his commitment to higher education.

Susan Rice Yarger received her M.S. in reading from Texas A&M University-Commerce in August. She is currently the librarian for St. Alban’s Episcopal School in Arlington, Texas.

Jennette Bradley has made history as the nation’s first black female elected to the office of Ohio lieutenant governor. She also made history as the first alumna to hold the highest public service office in Wittenberg’s nearly 160-year history. Jennette and her husband reside in Columbus, Ohio.
Christopher C. Colenda was appointed dean of the College of Medicine at Texas A&M University in January. He was previously chairman of the department of psychiatry and acting dean of medicine at Michigan State University’s College of Human Medicine.
Bryan Flanagan has been named senior vice president and chief financial officer of Blair Corporation. He has also been elected to the company’s board of directors. Bryan and his wife Elaine Story Flanagan ’73 reside in Annapolis, Md.

Mark LaForce was inducted into the Lorain Sports Hall of Fame for his achievements in football, track and wrestling. Mark is currently employed by Shunra software. He resides in Dayton, Ohio, with his wife and children.
A former high school English/speech teacher, Marlane Zillmann Renner is now a public speaker and the author of the nationally distributed book The Elephant In The Living Room, published last December. The Cleveland Plain Dealer recently wrote a front-page article about Marlane in its Sunday Life section, and she has appeared on other radio and television shows, including The 700 Club, to discuss the book. According to Marlane, the book is the transparent story of her rape at age 12, and it details the impact it had on her emotionally, physically and spiritually. It also discusses the healing process that turned her into the joyful person she is today.
Peggy Sherer recently joined a team of volunteers who spent three weeks in late February and early March working on healthcare and education projects at a boarding school in the remote East African community of Mtera, Tanzania.

Jana Schmidt Opperman has decided to leave her high school science teaching career to pursue a medical career. She lives outside of Philadelphia with her husband and two sons.

Brian Ray Lawter was awarded the Knowlton Award from the Military Intelligence Corps in April. The Knowlton Award is a select award given to personnel who contribute significantly to the advancement of the intelligence community. Brian and his wife Eun Jo Kim reside in South Korea with their son.

Chip Lund was a bicycle rider in the 2001 Canada to U.S. AIDS Vaccine Ride. The ride covered 400 miles in five days starting in Montreal and finishing in Portland, Maine. Chip raised more than $3,400 for research to find an AIDS vaccine. He resides in Dallas, Texas.
Beth E. Outterson is a Health and HIV/AIDS specialist for the U.S. Peace Corps in Washington, D.C. She resides in Alexandria, Va.

After living in New York City for 15 years, Diana Johns Brower has moved back to Ohio, where she met her husband Terry. She is a public relations promoter for Miami County and a ceramic artist. She resides in Bradford, Ohio.

After serving two years in the U.S. Peace Corps in the Republic of Vanuatu in the South Pacific, Timothy Isaly has now completed four years as the neighborhood association president in Ann Arbor, Mich. He is now employed as a middle school math teacher in Mount Pleasant, Texas.
Melanie Buroker Lambert recently became the director of human resources and administration for the corporate headquarters of IBM in Armonk, N.Y. She currently resides in Newton, Conn., with her husband and two children.
Francie Flusser Perry married David G. Cowen, Dec. 31, 2001. Francie is an office manager for Maxavision Technologies. She and her family reside in Tequesta, Fla.
Heather Reinert has been promoted to senior art director for L-A Advertising. She resides in Bethlehem, Pa.
Karen Speicher, an ordained United Methodist pastor, graduated from Pepperdine University with a master’s degree in public policy in April. She currently lives in Los Angeles, Calif., where she works on local and regional public policy initiatives. Karen has also had two religion articles published in the Los Angeles Times this year. She spent last summer in Haiti and hopes to return soon.
