Wittenberg transforms Woodlawn Avenue

Constructed during the summer months, a new red-bricked pedestrian walkway now runs from the corner of Ward Street to just beyond the north side of the Benham-Pence Student Center on Woodlawn Avenue.
Already a favorite hangout of students, the walkway features a mosaic in the shape of Wittenberg’s trademark “W,” given by the Class of 2003, and an elevated patio area
complete with outdoor seating. Additionally, three flagpoles, gifts from the Class of 2002, have been placed in the circular area on the south end of the student center in memory of those lost on Sept. 11, 2001.
A new “Walk of Honor,” which recognizes alumni award-winners since the 1930s, including Alumni Association Award for Distinguished Teaching recipients and inductees in the Athletic Hall of Honor, also adorns the plaza in the form of engraved bricks.
“It is great to see our community enjoying this new green space,” said Darrell Kitchen, vice president for business and finance. “We’re hopeful that the area will also become a venue for numerous student and university events.”
The $260,000 project, which increased green space without sacrificing emergency vehicle accessibility, was funded through a number of sources, including Alpha Delta Pi sorority in honor of its 150th anniversary.
