Student-Athletes Claim All-America Honors
After another outstanding fall season, which included North Coast Athletic Conference regular season and tournament championships for the field hockey and volleyball teams, eight student-athletes were recognized for their performance with All-America honors.
In volleyball, the Tigers finished 28-7 overall in 2003, won the NCAC regular season and tournament titles for a seventh straight year without a loss and advanced two rounds in the NCAA Division III Tournament. Sarah Yuskewich 05 was named NCAC Player of the Year and first-team all-conference, All-Great Lakes Region and All-America for the second straight year. Kristin Fox 05 capped her season with first-team all-conference, first-team all-region and third-team All-America honors. Emilie Schmid 05 was named NCAC Libero of the Year, first-team All-Great Lakes Region and Honorable Mention All-America. Lindsay Nelson 04 was named second-team All-NCAC, first-team All-Great Lakes Region honors and Honorable Mention All-America. Yuskewich and Schmid led the NCAC and ranked among the national leaders in assists and digs, respectively, for the Tigers, who were ranked in the top 10 all season.
Offensive linemen Chad Thompson 04 and Brad Kassner 05 were selected second-team All-America and Honorable Mention All-America, respectively. Thompson,
a four-year letterwinner and three-year starter with a 3.74 G.P.A., was named first-team All-NCAC three times, second-team All-North Region two times and second-team All-America two times in his career. He was also a first-team academic all-district selection in 2003. Kassner, a three-year letterwinner and starter, has been named first-team All-NCAC each of the last two years and earned national honors for the first time in his career. The 2003 Tiger football team finished 8-2 overall and 4-2 in the NCAC, good for a second-place tie.
The field hockey team finished 9-3 in the NCAC and 13-7 overall, and advanced to the NCAA Division III Tournament for the sixth time in school history. For the third time in her young career, Head Coach Marianne Beshara swept NCAC and Great Lakes Region Coach of the Year honors. In addition, goalkeeper Jen Meyer 05 and midfielder Blair Ufer 05 were named third-team All-America. Meyer was named first-team All-NCAC, first-team All-Great Lakes Region and third-team All-America, all for a second straight year. Ufer earned the same honors as Meyer. It was Ufers second straight year with conference and region honors and her first time with national recognition.
