After
36 years at Wittenberg, Richard Flickinger, professor of political science,
retired at the conclusion of the 2003-04 academic year.
Recipient of the Alumni Award for Distinguished Teaching in 1992, Flickinger consistently set high standards for himself and his students throughout his career.
A Mershon National Security Award for
Research winner and a senior member of the center, Flickinger regularly spoke at regional, national and international meetings on subjects ranging from western European politics to European-American relations.
An expert in the area of U.S. foreign policy,
especially arms control, Flickinger also served as interim provost in 1990 and helped to set the agenda for the university’s future as a member of the Commission on Academic Climate.
Widely published, including in the Harvard International Review of Press/Politics, he has also researched media use, political knowledge and political activity, both in the United States and Europe, in recent years.
