J. Arthur Faber, professor of English, retired in May, concluding a 38-year
career at Wittenberg. Educated in Europe, Canada and the United States, Faber
researched, published and presented on a wide range of topics during his
tenure, including Charles Dickens, John Marston, Robert Frost, the American
Novel, innovative teaching and national writing standards, and the “Education
and Pursuit of Happiness.”
In addition, Faber taught English as a Foreign Language, Shakespeare, the
Bible as Literature and creative writing as well as Canadian, British, American
and world literature, among other courses.
He also recently developed two new courses, “The 20th Century Literature of Witness and Protest” and “The Modern World as Read.”
A reader for Advanced Placement Exams and a published poet, Faber studied Frisian, Dutch and Flemish literary history and linguistics, including translating the languages. He also studied at the Free University and the University of Toronto.
