The Big Shebang
Homecoming and Reunion Weekend 2004 It doesn't get any bigger than this. From full-size cardboard cutouts of students in the Benham-Pence Student Center to a giant hand-crafted Tiger to the game ball being delivered by helicopter, Wittenberg's new Homecoming/Reunion Weekend 2004 proved indeed to be “The Big Shebang.” More than a 1,000 alumni descended on campus, Oct. 22-24, to enjoy the big weekend, which combined Alumni Weekend with Homecoming. With decorations designed by Springfield-based Ambience, alumni found themselves reminiscing in an elegant ballroom or kicking back in a Tiger-inspired lounge. Outdoor festivities, including the all-campus picnic beneath the big top, athletic contests and the annual parade, brought alumni from across the country back to campus. Adding to the big day were numerous dedications, including the renaming of the Black Culture House in recognition of The Hon. William A. McClain '34, who confronted and conquered many race-based obstacles in his 65-year law career and who today remains one of the most respected attorneys in the nation. Alumni and friends also witnessed the dedication of the Anti-Racism Statement, which reaffirms the university's commitment to diversity and education of the whole person. The event took place on the new Alumni Way, formerly Woodlawn Avenue, which was also dedicated. In addition, Wittenberg honored alumni with special awards, including Dr. Barbara VanLeer Evans, profiled in the fall 2003 issue, and seven others, profiled in this issue's Class Notes.
