Alumnus Helps Restore Recitation Hall Clock
After reading that the Herbert A. Littleton Memorial Tower Clock in Recitation Hall was not working, Bert A. Trompeter ’50 took action. “When you have something that’s broken, it should be fixed,” Trompeter said, and his gift to the university will have the Seth Thomas antique keeping time before the holidays. As an undergraduate, Trompeter climbed the Recitation Hall tower to help a friend install a television cable for his science fair project. He remembers thinking then that the tower appeared empty and unfinished. “I felt that a clock should be there,” he said. “Things should be finished.” A clock fancier from Louisville, Ky., Trompeter first became interested in clocks after being assigned to wind his elementary school’s 30-day clock once a month. Today he has one just like it in his collection along with 25 other treasured timepieces, including his first acquisition, a regulator clock from his grandfather’s barbershop. Six of the clocks have chime alarms. “Some mark the hour and half-hour, and others mark the half-hour and quarter-hour, and continue throughout the day and night,” he said with a laugh. He also must reset and wind “all these clocks” twice a year. Director of Plant Safety and Environment John Paulsen reports that the clock motor has been repaired, and he expects the clock, along with a repaired dial face, to be back in Recitation after Thanksgiving. “If I come up to campus,” Trompeter said, “it better be on time.”
